Andy,

Why? Always ask yourself why... WHY is PzB going that slowly? The possible answers are:
1. You're slowing him down with hard fighting.
2. He is logistically spread thin and doesn't have the supplies to push fast.
3. He is waiting for something - either follow-on units, a follow-on operation OR a reaction from you.

I suggest that it is most likely a mix of 2 and 3. He is getting his logistics set up and probably waiting for follow-on units to get organised and race to the schwerpunkt.

The problem for you is whether or not he is waiting for a follow-on operation OR for you to commit your reserves.... How much are you reconning his rear areas? I would suggest that some heavy recon there ( even if just subs in each of the bases where he could be landing troops/supplies ) would be useful about now. Just counting xAKs can tell you a hell of a lot about what he is up to. E.g.g 5 xAKs probably means supplies, 4 APs means troops etc.

I am pretty sure he is going to land in my rear in one of the bases that are clear terrain - probably not Townsville itself but deeper to try and destroy units

Either that or go all out for Aukland and NZ or Fiji.

I am betting on a narrow strategic envelopment so suck in my reserves to NE Australia and then hit Perth/East Coast behind me NZ or Fiji

Its those operations I am prepping against I have engineers in inland bases building them to lvl 4 AF's

My Aus Divs are scattered and divided trying to upgrade squads to the AIF 42 one.

2 US Divs plus several Indpt Regts are either in Aiustralia/NZ or Fiji.

I am transferring a couple of RAF Air HQ's to Australia which is a unit I am short of but apart from that I am not committing Indian forces to Australia as I would rather keep them for my own post monsoon offensive

Lots going on the danger would be if I tranferred 2 or 3 Divs to Aus from India that would leave me shortt of power in India post the
onsoon

I just can't accumulate fuel on Oz either. I am beginning to think this is a little out of whack. My fleet is based in Aukland and Sulva for that reason. Hobart is a good place to store fuel as you can build the port there but it is still a pain. I keep a lot of AOs tanked up just in case I have to fight. No other choice. It is a serious handicap.

Get all your American tank units to OZ asap. They will help you out a lot and you don't really need them elsewhere. If you feel secure in India (should be by May) run one or two of your tank brigades to OZ. These full brigades are serious kick ass units and fill up nicely with grant and lee tanks by June and July. No other terrain on the map favors Allied mobility better than OZ and Japanese mobile units are pretty weak vs medium tanks.

Main places I need to watch are the open terrain in my rear.

I have a real decison to make as to whether Townsville is worth defending it may be better to pull back a little I dont like being so exposed.

The more I pull back the more he needs to garrison

There was a good reason for the "Brisbane Line" in ww2, north of there is undefendable as there are too many axis of advance.

After the Brisbane line there was the Murray river :)

Again for good reason.

Cheers

Andy stop and think for the moment.

What has the enemy got now, and likely to have in total.
What are they trying to do.

What is your intent.

How do you achieve your intent, and hopefully (but NOT nessecarily, it is Ok for you BOTh to achieve your intents).

What forces do you need.

Once you work it out, gather your forces then punch, not tickle, him.

At this time of the war ground has NO (certainly their are benefits if you hold some locations) value as the Allies.

Give ground, generate mass, crush, repeat :)

Cheers

Rob

My objective is to give ground slowly and steadily bleeding him where I can without getting my forces destroyed while at the same time tempting him to commit more forces to the sinkhole in Australia

All the time my offensive forces are getting ready in India

Now that Java has fallen and those troops are free I want to steadily pull back but if I run to fast he wont even try to flank me and I want him to I think he may underestimate the time an amphib TF will take to unload after the bonus is gone.

I am training my pilots as fast as I can in both Australia and India and NZ and Fiji

I want lots of trained pilots I want experienced troops and when the time is right I will strike.

I am transferring some Indian units to Australia as part of a deception plan I want him to think I am reacting when if fact I plan to take the initiative away from him.

But in order for this to work I must force him to commit the Java Army to Australia.

In India I am keeping the 2 full strength AIF Divs plus my best Indian Inf Units and most of my replacements are going there.

In Australia they are making do with what they have and whatever green US troops I can find to cback them

How long do you think it will be before your in a position to mount a counter offensive andy?  Do you see any posibility of cutting any of PZBs units off in the counter?

If you could isolate even 1/4 of his Oz invasion force PZB would be prety weak else where.

For your burma attack any chance of adding in some chinese units to add preasure to lashio?

Ok so your strategic intent is to "encorage" (you can't force) him to commit more force to Australia. In order to do what?

Your method is to give ground slowly (causing delay?) to encourage hime to keep going... (this is a difficult call, you need to consider what is likely to stop him, and ensure you don't have that until you want to stop him).

How is transferring Indian units to Australia deception?

(reading between the lines you are planning an offensive in India? If that is the case your mission is to get him to commit forces to Australia in order to give you a favourable force ratio in Burma?)

I think you want to think about where you want to stop him. When you stop him you want to do it hard in a "kill sack" using aircraft, maybe Naval forces, and a strong enough ground force). You need to prepare that "sack" now, and maintain a good LOC for your forces to retreat to.

I suggest that somewhere you need to set up a strong enough point, that can't be outflanked, that will stop his mobile forces and force him to cmmit his main effort, to see what he is brining to the party. This probably needs to be 2 bds, but not a div... certaunly not a US div.

But really you want him to come far into Australia, loosing units (militia?) but keeping your key forces intact...

You need to choose your ground now for these actions, the initial "firm line" that will encourage him to commit, then the "kill sack".

You also need to think about how to use your mobility to try and cut him off (closing off the kill sack).

Cheers

Rob

Ok you have posted in between, I now see your strategic intent in Burma. You need to consider how much force you can handle there (i.e. what the enemy can bring to the party).

Can I sugget you conduct your initial "hard delay" at Rockhampton (it is a bit of a choke point, the roads inland allow you to be flanked, but are poor, but should encourage him to send units that way, which you may cut off).

Final defensive line being Toowomba/Brisbane (good ground) but you also need a good force at Burke... maybe mobile units to swing inland... This defensive position at Brisbane needs to be at least 3 div strong including 1 us div, to stop a 2Div Japanese advance... How much do you expect him to bring?

If you can hold Charleville with mobile units to try to channel him into the coast at Rockhampton.

Try to get some of those USMC para Bns, they can be used in your counter offensive to cut him off.

I think you still have too much forward of Rockhampton, suggest you evacuate now :)

Cheers

Rob

:) It all depends on where he commits his Java Army

A lot of LCU's that are forward deployed are sitting in strat mode so they can insta withdraw and having shown him Divs on the line I am slowly replacing them with Bns and Indpt Comapnies to keep my unit counts up.

I am in mod shell game pulling units back to the red line slowly and surely.

All of my Arrty and CD units are sitting at Rockhampton now....slowly but surely I am pulling units back.

Re India my main worry is how many units he can deploy into the line but by focussing my main assault from Akyab I think I can suck him forward especially if I can suck his troops up towards mandalay.

The key is he will have interior lines so its going to be tough but we shall see

My intent is to pull back slowly but for th eplan to work I need to keep the interior rail line operational just in case he cutst eh coast rail line.

So the Cav and Armour is already deploying to cover the inland rail bases from para attacks

I have a thick skin so no worries.

PP's are going to be my achilles heel.

I will not commit units over the border into Burma without paying PP's its about the only HR we have in this game.

So far all my PP's have been spent on US units now that needs to switch to allow me to assemble the force for the Indian attack.

Some of the forces are already in another unrestricted HQ but some will need to be bought out and I will need all my Corps HQ's

The offensive is tentatvely planned for 1st October 1942 so I still have time to force PZB to commit to Australia.

I would not be at all surprised if he envelopes me - in fact if I was him I woul go for NZ now on the assumption I have pulled all the forces out of there to support Australia.

I wonder if I could set a trap for him.

If I make it obvious that I have committed NZ LCU's to Australia it may encourage an attack on NZ where I could be ready for him far from help.

I need to think it through but that could be nasty

Andy, great AAR. I have not been able to read all the posts and thus may have missed some things, but do have 1 question. Are you bombing the piss out of him in Oz? Your bombers should shred his armor in all those open spaces. Even the Wirraways might be effective (but I doubt it), but you do have some Hudsons that should have an effect. You also get some B26s that I used in Oz and had good success against troops caught out in the open in move or strat mode. I get tired of worrying about where KB, subs and the surface raiders are lurking and send the B26s etc to Capetown and then ship to Perth.

Finally, please dont underestimate the speed which his armor can advance. I have been outflanked trying to get cute with with a fighting withdrawal. I'd pull back to where your divisions are and wait for him. Keep in mind that the brewers at Fosters are counting on you!

No I am short of Av support forward as I am saving some of my base forces to build up the rear lines.

Also I have a lot of Sqns training in the rear so the short answer is no.

I am already contracting back slowly and steadily.

p.s. its time for the bugout boogy.

My rearguard is ordered back from Townsville

I hate giving up without a fight but its to big a risk better to pull back and consolidate a little

My Divs are slowly upgrading the decent squads and more US troops are arriving and my pilots are getting stronger so give it time

Basing the fleet at Hobart in the vain hope that my Australian Industry will not suck up all the fuel - anyone else encountering this issue or is it just my bad management
