My next attack is likely to be a full court attack on the Line Islands - I could bypass them but the AF PZB has built at Christmas Island is a perfect base for me.

It will be interesting to see if PzB makes a serious effort to defend the Line Islands. He is now in a Lose-Lose-Situation. Any ressources to defend the Islands are wasted and giving up the Islands without resistance renders all previous efforts as wasting.

I am still not convinced that it was good idea by PzB to collect these islands because they are too far away from his own bases and are in every case hard to defend (even when he was lucky). When a japanese player

takes these islands so he should perhaps use these bases as offensive spring board to shot down any connection between Australia and the West Coast or capturing the Islands as part of a PH attack. But only capturing the Island and use them passiv does not convince me.

The Line Islands have been a great success for PZB

They are a weight on my mind tying up large numbers of assets watching the routes between WC and PH

With both Midway and Line Islands held against me PZB has access on both flanks this forces me to tie up large numbers of my best LR Escorts on picket duty both North and South

Reality is I should probably bypass them but they are such a weight on my mind that I need to neutralise them.

For Japanese players ground losses may ultimately be irrelevant, if you do not destroy the entire unit. This assumes that he has enough: Supplies at the site of the land combat unit fragment Heavy Industry in the pool Vehicle factories in the pool   The air-withdrawn land combat unit fragment (most likely by flying boat if in a coastal hex) will be rebuilt in a reserve area. The three questions are: Where will it be is where at? How long will it take? What kind of leadership will it have?   Is it better to leave unit collection to wither on the vine in the pocket or do you need the bases in the pocket to further your advance / improve your line of commutations?

Aye well an interesting couple of days

PZB managed to launch a co ordinated attck by 33rd IJA Div from the West and the 1st Tank Div from the East - my troops had not managed to dig in and once again the old AE proverb strikes home - dont send Bdes to do a Divs job !!!

My armoured spearhead is trashed and forced to retreat - the Inf Bdes are in ok shape but the Armoured Car Regts cannot stand up to a full Armoured Div in open terrain not after the pumelling they have taken by being in the open for days flanking and reconning

Basically my heavy armour is still with III Corps in Australia - the Light Armour and Recon units that supported the Chindits and marines were simply not enought o stand up to 2 full Japanese Divs on assault.

A valuable reminder that the beast can still bite.

My Armoured Car Regts will need tiome to rest and recuperate they are basically out of the campaign now.

I need my big armoured guns back in India but cest la vie - the good news it puts one of the most powerfull reaction forces yet another hex away from the critical point.

The Japanese have reinforced Toungoo

37th Division
9th Tank Regiment
6th Guards Division
4th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
2nd Hvy.Artillery Regiment
Botanko Hvy Gun Regiment
8th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
21st Fld AA Gun Co
18th JNAF AF Unit

These units are dead when IV Corps gets into position !!!

Bassein is a sideshow the critical point is the IV Corps attack driving on Pegu to posket the entire japanese Burma Army.

2 Days and the plan becomes evident !!!

Ground combat at Bassein (54,52)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 20701 troops, 251 guns, 658 vehicles, Assault Value = 813

Defending force 12212 troops, 144 guns, 810 vehicles, Assault Value = 723

Japanese adjusted assault: 399

Allied adjusted defense: 193

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Bassein !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: disruption(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
1942 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 99 disabled
Non Combat: 11 destroyed, 240 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 34 disabled
Vehicles lost 390 (25 destroyed, 365 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
2039 casualties reported
Squads: 112 destroyed, 24 disabled
Non Combat: 360 destroyed, 24 disabled
Engineers: 44 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 29 (29 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 751 (751 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 10

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
1st Tank Division
33rd Division

Defending units:
3rd Carabiniers Regiment
267th Armoured Brigade
8th KGV Light Cav Regiment
Gardner's Horse Regiment
4th Marine Regiment
75th IAC Regiment
268th Motorised Brigade
Guides Cavalry Regiment
16th Chindit Brigade
3rd (Special Force) Division

The Chindits and Marines are just not set up or equipped for a stand up brawl in open terrain they are light infantry standing against a full IJA Inf and Armoured Div in open terrain without forts is a no win situation - And asking armoured car regiments already depleted by air attack and their scouting/supply interdiction role to stand against even Japanese tanks in open terrain - hmmm

Only 268th Motorised and 3rd Carbiniers were in decent shape and 268th only has 12 - 6pounder AT guns

The combat result is unfortunately not unexpected and is reasonable despite it all my forces ALMOST managed to hang on it was a close run thing 2:1 buy about 10 points !!!

It's just 2 more divisions definitely pocketed - I'm sure PzB looks at it as a victory, but I think it's pretty pyrrhic.

Na I have a chance to pocket him but if PZB moves promptly and I mean right now he can probably get most of his troops out of it.

May cost him some battered units but the peculiarities of movement mean he probably has a head start on me coming down from the north as he pulled some units out before my attack.

The Rangoon Garrison can probably beat me to Pegu or at the very least arrive at the same time

Big air battles likely as both sides try to move in move mode and the other tryes to interdict

Andy, considering your (errr..) mistakes in 1943, you are doing a good job. You have well over two years of campaiging left so I think you will do it. Considering your fleet losses I admire that you stuck with it. I might have lost heart...

The mess of CVEs you have will be a big help but be careful They are very fragile. 600 AC on CVEs is not the same as 600 AC on CVs.

some bad luck as well opld bean

Simply said PZB will probably get the army out of Rangoon intact all he has to do is air attack my spearheads moving south and move an armoured unit or 2 north and he will delay me two days

Accordingly he will 'probably get most of the Rangoon Garrison back to Pegu intact

18th japanese Army is now cut off but will simply melt into the jungle and go the long way round.

I might catch them but I doubt it. The good news PZB now simply cannot fight for Rangoon or try a lengthy siege he (I hope has once again been manouvered out of a position)

Supply wise Prome is well stocked with supply enough to keep the army supplied for maybe 7 days of hard fighting or 30 days of movement so unless I bring B24's into Prome or large numbers of Mediums I am probably in the green for supply for 30 days.

I expect PZB to abandon Rangoon - its simply a death trap now for Japan.

The question is can I force a retreat on the Japanese Army moving to Pegu and therefore be able to bounce them out of Moulmien......

Honestly I suspect not - if PZB runs and runs fast and doenst pause to try and hang onto Pegu I suspect I will not be able to bounce him out of Moumiem

I will bring in the US 1st Cav Div, 9th Australian Div, 82nd West African Div and 32nd US Div all of which remain uncommitted to Burma as I cannot supply them but if I get rangoon I will bring them in while 3 or 4 of the damaged Divs rest and recuperate

KB turns up off of PM and loses 100 aircraft

Zeroes are not good fighters at this point of the war

Pacific Fleet is now back at Peqarl and future operations are in preparation

XXXIII Corps has taken Toungoo retreating most of the 18th Jap Army's support units and Arty - the Infantry got away.

There are at least 3 Inf Divs in the pocket I hope to force them all off road when I retreat them

As expected PZB hit my Inf hard probably slowing me down and making me go in move mode

PZB would have had to have made a nasty mistake to be trapped at Rangoon.

May still get the Bassein Divs but in all honesty I doubt it I will try to unite XXXIII Corps as hammer and IV Corps as anvil on the Toungoo road.

But I may push them out

You're quite the optimist Andy - sure, the KB lost some planes, but your ships are getting hammered again all over the place. Every ship that you lose is a ship that won't be available to bring your forces forward.

And I still don't understand why you don't put at least one miserable little ASW ship with your transport ships. You must have things like YMS and so on. They will keep the subs under the surface and give your freighters a better chance.

Sure, you get lots of ships, but you've also lost lots and lots of ships, and keep on losing them.

?? there isnt a single unescorted convoy on map apart from a few west coast ones that are formed by the AC system heading to NORPAC

A large proportion of my LR escorts are tied up on picket duty north and south of Pearl but pretty much every other convoy has strong escorts now nothing I can do about cripples after air attacks

Ah, okay. So there's another reason not to use automatic convoys...

I am desperate to retake or neutralise the Line Islands as it opens up a credible threat to CENTPAC again and wil tie KB down to that theatre.

Just need to wait for 3 more CV's 10 more CVE's and some B29's all of which I get in next 30 days......

Patience, patience, patience.......

The War in Pacific (as opposed to Land War in Burma) kicks off for round 3 in 30 days......its time to begin the long march to Tokyo !!!!

I suspect PZB is going to abandon Rangoon I canot imagine that he thinks its defendable now.

If he does then this leaves about 2 month before the Monsoon hits.

When the Monsoon hits I can still fight on if I have Rangoon but in reality operations will be slow and some of my units have taken a battering and need some rest and I need to reorganise my Corps and get them rebalanced and I would like to bring the Heavy Armour of III Corps back to Burma for the next phase.

So...

Assuming PZB abandons Rangoon and it takes 5 to 10 days for the docks to be repaired and convoys to unload.

What should be my priority ?

My initial thoughts are do not waste the time before the Monsoon there will be time to reorganise and tidy up the battlefield after the Monsoon hits.

My goal has to be to get into lower Burma if I can and maybe try and hit the Andaman Islands basically I want Pegu, Moulmien if I can manage it and Andaman Island - if I can deal with those 3 before the Monsoon I will be happy.

When the Monsoon hits I will take a 30 day rest and reorg period and get ready for next steps I already have a cunning plan for the future campaign !!

Why not route your convoys south to Hiva Oa and then west to where they are headed? Much less pickets needed. I am not sure if many pickets are needed north of PH. That is empty space and PH is presumably already safe.

Don't put too much hope in the CVE's. Even with their fighters upgraded to F6f's they are weak (pilot exp is not very good) and especially easy targets for subs due to their slow speed.

The Line Islands and Midway ... IMHO you should take both.

First of all, Island Hopping sounds nice. But the US isolated bypassed islands by suppressing them with airpower. You don't have airbases in the vicinity of Midway or the Line Islands. This means that Midway and the Line Islands will remain a thorn in your side if you bypass them. Midway is important because it is (a) not far from PH and thus can be used to spy on your movements in the CENTPAC and (b) it enlarges your own naval search radius in the CENTPAC. The Line Islands are important because (a) they sit on your supply lines and (b) because Christmas Island is a most useful base because of its size.

You should take Midway first - as soon as you have enough carriers to guarantee air superiority against any intervention from KB. At Midway, PzB cannot rely on any sizeable numbers of LBA because he has no airbases close enough to be a factor. Taking Midway should not be too hard. Find out which LCU's PzB has there. Probably you'll need just one US Army division (100% prepared and with Squads upgraded to the latest squad type), one Tank Battalion and one Combat Engineer Regiment with one Infantry Regiment as floating reserve. Loaded on LST's, the amphibious assault should present no problems. Two CVE TF's to provide ground support, one Replenishment TF (including some CVE's), one CVE TF to guard (CAP) the Amphibious TF's. Three Amphibious TF (one with the division, the tanks and the engineers), one with the floating reserve regiment and one with Seabees, a base force, supplies and a garrison battalion. Some Surface Combat TF's with lots of Fletchers and CL's, one Surface TF with two BB's + screen, two Bombardment TF's. Fleet Carriers operating independently. Lots of subs. If PzB commits KB, good for you. Better confronting KB out of range of Japanese LBA!

At the same time, prepare for the Line Islands. One full Corps for Christmas, three divsions + tanks and engineers. You don't need such an overkill as with your Port Moresby operation (where your Amphibious TF did not look convincing) but Christmas can suppport a large garrison.

Well, just my two cents

Yup, CVE's worked fairly well to provide additional strength to Air Combat TF's in WITP but not so in the AE (even if you can train their VF groups and I'ld bet that Andy has just done this).

Simply having a very large CAP is not that much a factor anymore as it was in WITP. CVE's have other uses, using them together with CV's limits the operational flexibility of Air Combat TF's.

I know but the issue is my CV's alone are heavily outnumbered

900 of 1800 CV aircraft are witht eh CVE's

Even with mixed corsairs and hellcats not sure I want a straght up fight for now

In other news PZB won the race to Pegu not a lot to say I knew he would but still to have it happen is hard !!!

A Bde of 2nd tank faced the full might of the Indian Army another Bde trashed....

If PZB wants to use Bdes to delay me and get them trashed in turn I am happy to accomodate lets face it I was always unlikely to cut him off anyway

I guess the battle of Pegu is about to begin

Genuinelly not to sure I want to fight it until I have XV and IV Corps in the line together with XXXIII Corps in reserve

PZB got out more or less intact when I attack I want it to be supported by massive artillery, air and lots of full strength Divisions de facto rither at Pegu or Moulmien for the first time I will face a concentrated Japanese force and its a toe to toe battle

To date by manouver I have managed to avoid that I could now be facing two if PZB decides to try and hang onto Rangoon (I doubt it but anything is possible)

Been mulling over my next steps in the CBI

Assuming PZB consolidates his army what am I going to do.

My initial thought is that I need to spend some time tidying up.

Assuming rangoon falls it wil take time to repair the facilities and stock it up with supplies. I also want to re deploy my strategic airforce and rest the assault Divisons and rotate in some of the unused formations

My initial thoughts are to continue to attack on this line and keep the pressure on after an admin pause to get Rangoon open.

Specifically

14th Army will continue to attack PZB at Moulmien/Pegu whichever he decides to stand at.

I will place under command IV Corps and XV Corps each with 4 Divisions and an Idpt Armoured Bde of my freshest troops allowing others to rest.

Burma Corps will defend Northern Burma and clean up remaining pockets of resitance with 2 Divisions under command

XXXIII Corps will enter rest and recuperation mode at Rangoon with all my damaged Divs immediate tasks will be prepping for Port Blair and Northern Sumatra so I have troops prepped for these operations.

A new Corps HQ will arrive in next few days and will take over command of all US forces committed to CBI (3 x Divs, 4 x Indpt Regts) this Corps will prepare for landings in Southern Sumatra

Lastly I have decided that as soon as shipping permits III Indian Armoured Corps - (currently in Australia) will be transferred back to CBI theatre

This will give me a 2,000 AV motorised/armoured force for use if an when I get to Malaya.

I am breaking my cardinal rule with all this that Burma was a sideshow and a diversion but the success of the re conquest of Burma makes me loathe to give up the benefits achieved - I have an opportunity to force PZB to commit huge forces to stop me which will drag units out of more important sectors

De facto the real attack remains CENTPAC to Marshalls to Marianas to Bonins to Okinawa or Formosa or SWPAC to NG to Marianas or PI to Formosa or Okinawa - its just happening a year later than history

However an attack that retakes Malaya would be really nice as it would open up DEI to attack forcing heavy garrisons in North Borneo etc etc

You had a strategic plan. You do best when you stick to plans. Historically you get spanked when you improvise.

You need to not be greedy and play to your strengths. Abandoning your strategic plan now is sub-optimal.

Today forces of 14th Army Liberated the wreck that is Rangoon.....

Nemo you are correct PZB ultimately made the sensible and timely decison and evacced Burma to Pegu.

This means he has the best part of 3 or 4 Armoured Divs concentrated in one hex backing 5 or 6 Inf Divs

Finally he has concentrated - my chances of breaking through - ummm minimal and even if I do my army will be trashed I will probably be able to take Pegu and then looking at the terrain south of Pegu I am channeled into a frontal attack which I do not really want to engage in as PZB's weapon is less fragile than mine

Mulling over options but I think the focus shifts now back to the other axis of advance out of PM into NG and out of CENTPAC

Taking one step at a time next move is the line islands after my new carriers arrive

Taking a long look round back to the DEI by way of NG is next on the agenda

I will prepare contingency plans by having a Corps prep for Java, Sumatra and Malaya as it will give me options but the focus in Burma will be on tidying up regathering fragmented units and resting my damaged divisions and armour

I will briong III Armoured Corps back to Burma as having all my armour in one place will help a lot

aye but I suspect PZB will now pull back out of Pegu and sit entrenched with interlocking Divs in a hex thats damned hard to flank (its what I would do)

Starting to re organise for the next phase - it will take a while !!!

Initial steps

Indian Air Force Sqns are concentrating at Lahore for re training as operational losses and continuos combat has depleted the Indian pilot pool - 1 Sqn of Spit VIII's will remain on the front line but the others are in training mode.
USN and USMC Sqns are moving to cover Colombo and Bombay with all the blooded pilots now pulled and ready for traansfer to the newly formed Pacific Fleet
The USN Bomber Sqns will now convert to Venturas releasing the PB4Y's for USN Bomber Sqns in other theatres - again a tithe of the best pilots will be pulled for other duties.

USAAF Strategic Bombing Sqns will be converted to older models - B24D's D1's and 17's releaing all the B24J's for other duties (I prefer to have one type per theatre if possible to aid co ordination)
USAAF Mediums will now transition to A26's B26, B25C's and B25G's realeasing as many B25D1's and B25H's as possible and again a tithe of the best pilots will be pulled.
USAAF Fighter Sqns I am leaving the P47D2's in Burma and P38G's and F's the rest of the USAAF Sqns will operate P40's and P39's a tithe of the best pilots will be pulled again

This transition will allow me to strengthen significantly forces operating in SWPAC which will recieve the P47D25, P38J, P38H, B25H's and D1's and B24J's

Centpac will get the now battle hardened USN pilots, F4U1A's, PB4Ys and B29's

PDU's ability to reallocate best resources tot he schwertpunk is the bit that helps the allies.

Andy

This will leave the Burma AF with a strong core of strategic bombers (albeit mixed types)

A strong tactical AF consisting of older models B25's and A26's and RAF Vengeance and Blenheims
A strong strategic AF of B24D1's, D's and B17E's, RAF Wellingtons and Liberators
Lots of USAAF Sqns with a core of P47d2'S but with the rest in p40's and P39's

Large numbers of search aircraft - RAF Catalinas, USN Mariners, RAF Wellington and Liberator GR models and a few Venturas
