**************NorPac HQ, Anchorage, Aug. 15, 1942************* Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: ..do you have this weeks casualty figures, Soupy? Lt. jg Milton Supman: Yes sir! <consults clipboard> Hmmmm....3 Bowheads, 4 Humpbacks, 1 Minke and a Beachmaster run over by an LCT. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: Ah, poor bastard. Amphibious operations are fraught with peril. Did you write a nice letter to his family? Lt. jg Milton Supman: Oh, no sir. It was a walrus. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: Ah, well, war is Hell. Any Japs sighted? Lt. jg Milton Supman: None confirmed. Closest thing was that report at Great Slave Lake in May. Even there it seemed a rather odd invasion route to North America. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: I concur. <grows pensive> You know, Soupy, sometimes, in a private moment, I wonder if we were sent up to NorPac to get us out of the way. Lt. jg Milton Supman: Out of the way, sir? Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: Yes, yes, as if we were somehow a hinderance to the war effort. Lt. jg Milton Supman: No sir! Why, we just received 3 new sub chasers. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: See, that's what I mean. One four-stacker, a threesome of sub chasers and 5 S boats. That's not much of fleet. Lt. jg Milton Supman: Well sir, there is the new P-43 squadron you sent to Dutch. They don't even have the P-43 in the South Pacific. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: Hmm, perhaps you are right. Then there is the B-18 squadron too. That is kind of high number for a bomber. Lt. jg Milton Supman: Indeed! It's higher than a B-17, so it must be better. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: You know, Soupy, I always feel better after I talk to you. Lt. jg Milton Supman: Thank you sir. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: You're welcome, son. Seeing as how we have not spotted a Jap in 9 months, what say we start a training program for the men...call it "Why We Fight"? Lt. jg Milton Supman: I LOVE it sir. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: Splendid! Say, did you get in on that timeshare thing for Amchitka? Lt. jg Milton Supman: Yes sir. I snagged an end unit with a volcano view. Adm. Theobald, CIC, NorPac: Splendid. That chap from Fiji has to be the most persuasive human being I have ever met.............
