I've been immersed in this game too long; I find myself wondering if she can really "see" out to 25 hex range and fly out to bite you if she spots you.

The answer to the first part is no....even though the search arc graphic seems to go out to 25 hexes, the routines either cut if off at 12 hexes or seriously degrade the chances (due to geometry of the arc..a 480nm 10 degree arc starts to get pretty broad). A seriously knowledgeable AE person told me this I just can't remember who

The answer to the second part is yes..if you order a Mavis to recon a port 25 hexes away and it finds something...it may attack.

The broadness of the arc would be (Pi/18) * (25 * 46) or about 200 miles at 25 hexes. it would make since to cut off effectiveness at 12 hexes or about 550 miles at it would be a 2 hex wide arc about 92 miles .. and at 6,000 feet the horizon distance would be 88 miles ... so it makes since that as the arc becomes longer the stuff over the horizon is not seen ..

Back to the movie ..

Did you account for the curvature of the earth?

You have an excellent point as I approx things using [distance = SQRT(2*Radius of the Earth * altutude)] just to give a feel of the numbers but in reality I should use distance to the horizon = Radius of the Earth * arccos (Radius of the Earth / (Radius of the Earth + Altitude))

3959 * arccos (3959 / 3560) = 88.97378 miles .. about 89 miles but close enough for government work

Back to your local programing ..

I think a more accurate measure would be to head out past the ole oak stump and keep going for a spell. Then when it seems right you hook a lewie and go thataway fer a wee bit. Then if you don't find nuttin' ya head back to the ranch.

Nothing wrong with Puerto Princessa. I'm a fan of Basuanga in this case (like I said several months ago) because of the huge port size. Immediate large supply stacking and ease of build.

By ra way, does this childish racist crap bother anyone?

Are you kidding? This is my primary childish hangout. Although you did get me in trouble the other day. My GF had a nice dinner conversation about her "guinea" friends at work, and about how some clerk tried to "gyp" her out of some change at the store. And her aunt lives nearby in a really crappy town called Amsterdam, which she routinely refers to as Amster-Rico for some some unknowable reason. But then I got in trouble for making a perfectly innocent comment about "JJ" and the "LYBs."

You're a bad influence, Cap'n. Best part of my day.

JJ and the LYBs? Were they on the Grammys? I can't keep track of all the hip-hop groups these days.

They may have been on yours, but my Grammy was a proper lady!

Both expressions are historical (unabbreviated). ALSP submitted the "Johnny Jap" bit. I believe he said he read it in a racist Engrish comic book during his childhood 15 years ago.

Thanks to ALSP I am reading Quartered Safe Out Here by George MacDonald Fraser about his experiences in Burma as a private/corporal. That is how they talked. Even decades after the war he admitted he was uncomfortable around Japanese, loved the Gurkhas and loved Gen. Slim. Fraser claims he could smell a "Jap" postion hundreds of yards away.

Americans used the expression "Japs" (even Admirals, most notably Halsey) as the primary identifier but the expression "Johnny Jap" seems more colorful. MacArthur, having graduated first in his class was required to say "Japanese" or "the enemy" but I bet he was tempted to say "little yellow bastards" when the LYB's overran the San Miguel Brewery in Manira (he was part owner).

The KKK, the NAACP and the SPCA also existed in 1941 but I'm not so sure about HOA's in the lesser Sundas.

The daffodils are blooming about 13 days LATER than last year.

We are doomed. Global cooling has arrived. I'm going down to the Army/Navy store to see if they have winterized Quonset huts.

Both Basuanga & Puerto Princessa. start at 3(2) ports, has JJ built up Basuanga more and I missed it? Basuanga does have a base airfield size of 0(5) which means a level 8 airfield possibility vs. level 7 for Puerto Princessa

I just noted that Basuanga does put all of Formosa in 4E range ...something to store away for my next game

Keep an eye out for some Peruvian Corsairs too. Your central Philippines offensive could use 'em.

It's impressive to me that the Arries recognized the importance of this axis of approach. Here's something from their campaign in the central Philippines from the Pacific War museum in Texas:

BACKGROUND: In my lastest game [which just ended today with an Allied AV] I have USA armor in China and own Hong Kong in FEB 1944 but I am nowhere as advanced in the Phillipines as this game .. In a post demonstrating just how strategic Burma can be -- I point this out .. well Crsutton comments:

quote:

Crsutton: "Excellent position and an Allied fanboy's dream. But this is not going to happen vs a competent Japanese player in 1943 and I doubt 44 in an scenario #2 situation. " (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3189256&mpage=29, post 855)
[Said with tougue burried in cheek] " Excellent position and an Allied fanboy's dream. But this is not going to happen vs a competent Japanese player in 1943 and I doubt 44 in an scenario #2 situation. "

Not only is it happening .. but I suspect that things are going to start to unwind dramatically as the HI/pilot problem in scenario #2[discussed in AndyMac vs PzB] raises its ugly head for JJ ...

I'm not sure if comparing to history is relavent because the game does not reflect logistical constraints for one .. but in terms of victory and this game .. JJ is in deep trouble ..

Good point. After the unreconed air drop on Manado didn't go so well, there has been some "pushback" from the ranks.

**********************March 17, 1943(c)*******************

Vewy, vewy quiet.

San Jose: I anticipated a night raid on San Jose. Didn't happen. Fresh engineers landing under cover of a crusier led group. No air raids either.

Cagayan: No air raids. Almost level 5. We took the two towns east of Cagayan so now we have a nice view of the Phillipine Sea.

Davao: Resting. Just artillery bombardments and smallish B-24 raids.

Naga: Looks like the surviving ships ported or pulled back. Naga seems to have an SNLF unit now.

Jolo: 2 BB's there now.

Darwin: A few frisky Bettys attack Darwin. A Marine fighter squadron just converted to Corsairs. Bad news for the Bettys.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Darwin at 76,124

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 46 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 15 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 5

Allied aircraft
Boomerang C-12 x 5
F4F-4 Wildcat x 6
F4U-1 Corsair x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 3 destroyed

No Allied losses

Burma: ALSP started a "recon everywhere" campaign to confuse the LYB's

This McCrea kid is either going to get hisself keeled or promoted. He is probably perpetually angry because his parents named him Vaughn.

Submarine attack near Taihoku at 89,63

Japanese Ships
xAKL Nichirin Maru, Shell hits 49, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Hoe

xAKL Nichirin Maru is sighted by SS Hoe
SS Hoe attacking on the surface

What this report does not say is how many of these hits were .50 cal vs. the "big" gun ... Only the annimation provides this clue .. but we can assume teh USS Hoe emptied the magazines ..

80 miles off Formosa in broad daylight. I think it was the deck gun. Not sure 49 .50 cal rounds would do "heavy damage"

My son decided to throw himself a "Top Gun" themed birthday party with his friends. They went down to the Army/Navy store and bought dress whites and then went bar hopping. Apparently, this film was a formative experience as they all gave themselves Top Gun style nicknames .."Goose", "Stork", "Aardvark"..that sort of thing.

They discovered they had suddeny become superconducting "babe magnets" and everyone offered to buy them drinks. After the third fellow came up and offered to buy them drinks my son finally had to ask him, "You do realize I am wearing Converse sneakers?"

SG was working so I went to see Lucy today. I decided she was too old for me...and pretty damn short too. Damn interesting, though. Her head was kinda small too. I doubt she would have been very good at WITP/AE...well, maybe playing Japan with the Zero and amphbious bonus.

Her mandibular molars are in unbelievable shape. They look better than my teeth. The right ones have been partly replaced (during fossilization) with some kind of metallic-looking mineral. I though for a second she had fillings.

OK, let's say, by some miracle, we manage to get the units of 2nd Marine Div "back together" and reform the division.

What HQ will it have?

What happens to prep points if they are not all prepped for the same location?

What kind of base could I do this at..Manado or Ternate maybe?

You can see the Regiments are at close to full strength even if some of them are 800 miles apart.

US 37th ID will be a simpler matter once Manado is captured, I imagine. 129th and 148th are a bit understrength after the fight on New and Improved Scotland and to a lesser extent at Manado
