Lingayen: The weather clears and the air attacks go in this turn. As usual, the fit hits the shan. TBF's from Batanges arrive first without their dedicated escort or the LRCAP of Corsairs from Vigan. WJD CAP is likely from San Fernando but Lingayen airstrip is still operational. Poor bastards. I hope the pilots are OK. We don't have any reserve of trained torpedo-skilled pilots. The 20 P-40K's that were supposed to escort are still having coffee in Batangas. Morning Air attack on 54th/C Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 17 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet. Estimated time to target is 7 minutes Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 6 Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 7 Ki-61-Ia Tony x 11 Allied aircraft TBF-1 Avenger x 10 No Japanese losses Allied aircraft losses TBF-1 Avenger: 4 destroyed Aircraft Attacking: 1 x TBF-1 Avenger bombing from 15000 feet Ground Attack: 2 x 500 lb GP Bomb Waste of SBD's which get slaughtered even the though the LRCAP of Corsairs shows up. A staff flunkie told us the SBD's would level bomb at 15K feet. Dumb ass. Don't believe everything you read on mimeographed intelligence briefings. Morning Air attack on 28th Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 20,000 feet. Estimated time to target is 7 minutes Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 6 Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 7 Ki-61-Ia Tony x 11 Allied aircraft F4U-1 Corsair x 18 SBD-3 Dauntless x 9 Japanese aircraft losses Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed Ki-61-Ia Tony: 2 destroyed Allied aircraft losses F4U-1 Corsair: 1 destroyed SBD-3 Dauntless: 5 destroyed Aircraft Attacking: 3 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 3000' Ground Attack: 1 x 1000 lb GP Bomb And more. These chaps were supposed to have 23 P-39D's as escorts. We have no SBD inventory. Morning Air attack on Sasebo 7th SNLF, at 79,75 (Lingayen) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 12 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet. This is why one doesn't normally do this but the words "maximum effort" were on the order. We finally take out a dreaded "knee mortar". That should stop them, eh? Morning Air attack on Sasebo 7th SNLF, at 79,75 (Lingayen) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet. WJD CAP finally had to go back for bullets and gas. Good news, the two big WJD infantry units are still at Lingayen. The sacrifices of the USMC and USN squadron pay off Morning Air attack on 54th/C Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 18 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
