Wow! Good show in Burma. Never seen simultaneous attacks like that. That was a serious mistake by the Shinto Boys, attacking like that at Mandaray. I can see why they tried given how disastrous the combat result looked from the day before for the Arries. Turned out, however, all the Indian divisions were only at about 50% disruption after the river crossing. They might have been able to hold up to our attack had they not disemboweled themselves first.

I'm guessing they retreated West, also a big mistake, but they came blame that on the AI. Had they retreated to Meiktila, they would have prevented its capture.

Central Burma is completely toast for the Shinto Boys, Odin-worshippers and McGoo Cargo Culters alike. That LYB unit at Magwe has started moving East to Miktila but it's too late. Arried armour from Mandaray will beat them there.

As far as the greater Burma .. Chickenboy still maybe thinks there is a possible secondary line .. my money is that a few stray units exist in the jungle/road hexes ...

Once Armor gets into the Thai Plains .. it is all over .. John Pinette can start the opera ...

Yes, they could form a line in the jungle/jungle rough hexes but they have to have the men to do it.

JJ still has 2 tank divisions at Prome and somewhere out there is 33rd Div, last seen heading west from Lashio, and Imperial Guards.

They've lost their strongest defence line (with only level 2 forts!) but they still have some fight in them yet.

Like my 5th Grade teacher told the class, "Don't put words in my mouth. It's unsanitary."

It's possible that Taung Gyi is supported / defended / built up. I know I'd do it-and a few other choice JR or J hexes too. I'm not sure about the uber-Emperor in this case. There've been some real head scratchers with the Japanese R&D and deployments (Truk? Still? Really?). I've no idea what the Allied dogs will find elsewhere in Burma in this game. Anything could happen.

I did not mean to put words into your mouth as much as summarizing our thread .. my gut feel in looking at the combat reports indicates to me that there is not a whole lot more of unengaged units worth putting on a defensive line and I understand your post:

quote:

"Aye, but what information do we, the implaccable [sic] readers, have regarding recent recon efforts at Taung Gyi and beyond (the secondary WJD MLR)?" (WitP AE AAR, 2013, post 13021)

Suggests to me that one needs to still consider a secondary line ...not so much as putting words in our mouth as summarizing and extending .. done everyday in peer reviewed journals ...thus I quote "thinks maybe .." but a better way of putting this is that Chickenboy's comment in post 13021 suggests to me to still consider a secondary line ...

Now I agree that Tuang Gyi can be a tough nut to crack and could be built up .. but I think it will soon be neutralized by Spirior's move on Prome and ability to cross over the jungle to cut off rail supply ... Thus whatever is defending the critical rail junctures is in deep trouble from my experiences ...N=2 in which I used a Burma offense to end the game in '43 and mid '44 respectively ... regardless of Cap's move to turn the Home Islands into ash ...

Phillipine Sea: One of those whack-a-mole LYB airifields on Luzon raises its head and hits a transport convoy returning from Vigan. Evidentry, the LRCAP was a little late in arriving. Ugh. More Idas?

Cap'n-when was the last time you saw a Kate or D3/D4 (Val / Judy)? I'm flummoxed as to why you are still seeing the "C" or "D" team so close to the HIs...

OK

Just to get the discussion going ahead of the pace of affairs .. do you think the IJA could form a line at Tavoy to Bangkok in time? I am starting this discussion because I really do not know how to evaluate the IJ's empire at this point with the Cap knocking on the home islands door and the situation in Burma given 1943 ..My take is that things are going to collapse soon ...my thought is that the units that were smashed at Mandalay are far from a base with 25K supplies to recover properly and those units have to march to a base to get railed to Rangoon?? .. which will be smashed and then march to Bangkok? or rail/march to Singapore? else they too will be eliminated .. Smashed units BTW do not do well in a non-base Malaria hex ...

Anywayonce the Allies get into position to take Bangkok it is possible with paradrops to take Ubon .. and rail units from Bangkok to take Hue ... in my first game it was about 100~ turns from a similar point to get into that position ...

In my diatribe mentioning jungle hexes and malaria . I kind of thought that these forces would go this way. This leaves 2 jungle hexes (including the hex they are in) to head south and Sprior can cut this off .. or retreat to their final doom at Lashio .. because I doubt seriously enough supply is here to recover the disabled squads replace destroyed squads... In fact, I might suggest the trip through the non-base hexes might be enough to wack another 10% of the remaining force .. (assuming morale, fatigue, and dispersed/disabled squads effect movement leaving these forces in off-base hexes for longer in the malaria area .. )

It will be interesting where the movement arrow goes on these forces ... smacking them with ground attacks puts them in combat mode and 1/2 movement... slowing these guys down further ... along with turning disabled squads into destroyed squads ...

I assume Taung Gyi is next on the list after Prome falls?

Horrycrappo-jima: There is no attempt to land troops again by JJ. Not sure if they gave up or retreated from the surface group of St Louis and the Fletchers. JJ did manage to destroy the two 81 mm mortars we dropped on the island yesterday. Damn good shooting from 8K feet if you ask me. I think 1st Marine Para Bn should be landing by airdrop today.

Afternoon Air attack on 503rd Parachute Regiment, at 91,66 (Miyako-jima)

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 25 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-49-IIa Helen x 10

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
Guns lost 4 (2 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Ishigaki: You know how I said Iriomote had a fortress but Ishigaki did not? Well, it seems we should have purchased the Ryukyu Islands Intelligence rider from M&M.

Ground combat at Ishigaki (90,66)

Defending force 1252 troops, 24 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 37

Laoag(Luzon): I think the WJD tank regiment at Laoag must have been in move mode or something because our tac air just completely destroyed them. Here is a partial example.

Morning Air attack on 73rd JAAF AF Bn , at 81,72 (Laoag)

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 32 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 10 minutes

Allied aircraft
B-24D Liberator x 18
B-24D1 Liberator x 23

Allied aircraft losses
B-24D1 Liberator: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
232 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 20 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Vehicles lost 20 (20 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Then, when the attack came it wasn't even sporting.

Ground combat at Laoag (81,72)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 12832 troops, 324 guns, 404 vehicles, Assault Value = 372

Defending force 510 troops, 10 guns, 24 vehicles, Assault Value = 3

Allied adjusted assault: 251

Japanese adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 251 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Laoag !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: disruption(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
385 casualties reported
Squads: 20 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 71 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 11 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 13 (13 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 27 (27 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 3

Assaulting units:
2nd British Division
640th Tank Destroyer Battalion
637th Tank Destroyer Battalion
3rd NZ Armoured Sqn
3rd Marine Regiment
II Aus Corps Engr Bn /2
2/10th Armoured Rgt /2

Defending units:
2nd Indpt SNLF Coy
11th Tank Regiment
73rd JAAF AF Bn

Now, some of this force can go back to Vigan to stiffen defenses there and the reaminder can move on toward Aparri.

Back to Burma: Interestingly, fighter sweeps over Rangoon enocuntered NO enemy CAP whereas there was a pretty good CAP over Pegu. We certianly lost several B-24's over Pegu but it is important to suppress and Netties at Pegu/Rangoon before the relief tranpsorts arrive off Port Blair.

I was amazed that the lads at Port Blair held off another 2:1 attack. They were in slightly better supply situation b/o SST drops.

Here is the status of the lads at Port Blair BEFORE the last attack. 44th Indian has only 4 intact infantry squads and 2 Bren sections.

120th RAF base force has more combat power than an entire infantry brigade. I think it's the 4 Marmon Herrington jungle assault vehicles.

Oddly, they seem to be in good spirits.

Some staff flunkie sent some lads of 503rd PIR up there because it reconned empty. 1500 LYB desk jockey arrived at the same time but forgot their guns. It's a Mexican stand off.

We now have 30 airborne troops still there. They are probably at your mother-in-laws parent's house stealing cabbages at 3AM

Obviously the effects of that emergency Parchesi shipment of yore. Nicely done, Cap'n. Your staff flunkie got that one just right. Now maybe you'll consider sending them some rice and lentils or chickpeas?

Now I am getting emails for "Black girls want to meet you", "Asian girls in your area want to talk" and a banner ad for "Christian Singles" where I get to pick the age AND either sex! Whoa!
