1981 holy moly.

If SSI could have only lasted yet another 20 years...

I always thought Matrixgames was SSI with a different name. The same fundamental games are being produced by them and they do have Joel Billings and Gary Grigsby right?

I also remember names like Krogal or Koger (sp) and Landrey of the SSI days and Hille who did the first Combat Leader game actually.

Gamewise though Matrixgames still puts out wargames like SSI did except for rolepaying games in the DnD style like the Gold Box series which I still have fond memories and the 5-1/4" disks of for my Commodore 64. Sword of Aragon I had to buy an Amiga 500 to be able to play it. The colors and sounds were great back then for those games also. Those games let you design your characters looks and colors as well.

Wow, I had no idea there were SFB players here.

While I was in diapers while many of you were commanding starships in SFB...

...I've recently been introduced to SFB's child "Federation Commander." A "lighter" version of SFB by the same creator.

I didn't get into SFB until 1980 (I missed the early version because I was stationed overseas). And then I bought everything as SFB gained momentum. Had a hobby shop that kept at least one of everything set aside for me just for my annual shopping trip while on leave (did they see me coming or what? *grin*).

Before SFB, I had the Zocchi floor game... [*ack* name escapes me], strings, miniatures, compasses, etc. Used the same miniatures as SFB (and maybe used them first?).

I once had a Romulan fleet attacking a Fed Star Base. We slugged it out until I had one crippled War Eagle with no shields left and all of his shields were gone with a phaser on the other side of his starbase, so it turned into a race to see if he could rotate his star base faster than I could charge a plasma torpedo. I remember him being impressed that I was still pressing the attack.

Well, he managed to destroy me with one shot from his phaser IV and afterwards he stood up from the other side of the table and shook my hand and said I acted like a real warrior.

Even in war games you can have chivalry.

While I've barely played through a single scenario, the biggest differences are:
a) It's more fluid than SFB. Especially in the power planning. Instead of plotting all power usage at the beginning of the turn, you use a coin(s) on your SSD to use/spend energy where and how you see fit as the turn progresses (Course changes are on-the-fly as well, within the age old speed limitations).
b) Much higher production quality... SSD's are laminated and VERY colorful.
c) There is more marketing strategy because of the higher production quality. You won't really want to just run off more copies of SSD's, but are instead induced to buy more add-on packs with more SSD's and ship types, etc. (unless you do what I did, and just make a Vassal module for the game. *grin*)

This damn thread, did get me to reinstall Starfleet Command II and Starfleet Command Orion Pirates though. Now I've got to sort through and reinstall a million** ship model mods that make it really look like SFB.

** okay, a slight exaggeration. *grin?*

Hey Jev, or E...

Was in the Beta test group for both games. Loved them. Just like always, anyone who can cloak and fire plasma is too powerful unless they are outnumbered or runs into a fleet with a couple of minelayers.

I'm going to keep at least one of my PCs running on WinXP just so I can keep on playing these games.

Now if someone would make a TOP down, turn based, hex mapped, WEGO game based on Star Trek, I'd be in heaven...

I can't remember but can you command a star base in SFC or SFC:OP or did that have to be AI?

Great post!

Regards,

Rob

Still got my games and counters locked up. Once in a while, I dust them off and it's a go.

I don't remember either... I don't think so, but I'm still trying to piece my fleets back together in OP (haven't looked at II, even though I reinstalled both at the same time). I haven't seen a way to even get a starbase into a skirmish scenario (unless someone has a scenario already scripted).

I did find a size comparison I did many moons ago for the Federation addons (in context of my reply, as I recall, there was absolutely no way to get a full screenshot of the starbase)...

I take back my previous damnation... I've forgotten how fun Starfleet Command 2 & Starfleet Command 2 Orion Pirates are!   If given a choice between SFC2 & SFC2OP and reasonable prices, go for OP... it's a bit more stable in solo campaign and a bit more mod-able, as there are more ships slots that can be used up due to the addition of gobs of Orion Pirates (Not to mention there are more ships per race, period).

...I do notice that many commands can be accomplished while the game is paused, and if you turn down the game speed to a "1"**, this is still damn near turn-based. Definitely not turn-based, but damn near. And it is Starfleet Battles (and even more so, if you replace all the Movies and Next Generation stuff with SFB 3D Models).

** (multiplayer defaults to a clickfesting "7"....needless to say, I never play/played multiplayer)
