I  decided I didn't want all the copyright aggro I might get.

Are you joking? You wont get any copyright aggro what so ever. There are hundreds of games out there with star wars, star trek, this & that mods.
Never any issue, because why would there be? Just a single sentence "Ship art from Star Trek" is all thats needed.
Also, you can call them mods even if you only changed some picture formats or resized them to fit the game, its still a mod since it modifies the game.

Seems most people on these forums are fairly new to games in general ^_^
This is old established stuff, everyone knows :P

I'm not new to games at all, having been gaming since the early 90s, besides, all I said is that it's always important to make it clear who owns the source-material you use for your mods.

It also depends greatly on which company is the owner, for example FOX do huge mod crackdowns on anything related to their IPs, such as Aliens for example.

If I buy DW I can guarantee I'll be modding it, or using mod(s) created by someone else.
I think that as long as you give credit where source material is from and you are not expecting
to make a profit with your MOD ....you have nothing to fear.
