June 8th 1942, Hitler awakes to the news of the defeat at Midway to the Empire of Japan. Halder and the general staff plead that "Fall Blau" must be scraped and the destruction of the Red Army is a must and Moscow has to be the goal. Hitler, after a fit, agrees and hands over command to Halder and the OKH in the east...After the brutal winter, organization is a mess, and the rebuilt panzer forces are in the south...Hum...

Some info, I'm in the mode that shows static units (white outline). It costs AP's (Admin points) to activate them (move trucks), and theres only so many. So you can see that I really have to manage where and when I move those trucks...Never had that in a board game ,huh...

Freeboy I missed your question... The coast of the Baltic is abstract, as theres no vessels in the game...So after the gulf of Finland its called a stalemate (no navel action), no help from either side. Before the gulf it's German waters...

What is the division above and to the left the SS Wiking.
BTW... your plan looks good.
I guess will see if a one arm encirclement of Moscow would work.

It's good to have your AAR back PyleDriver.

Looking at the front near Rzhev and your proposed line of advance, wouldn't it do more damage to the Soviets to wait until the units of the northern yellow arrow can make a move, and then to close the pocket from Rzhev instead of from the position of the southern yellow arrow? It would trap more units and give you a shorter frontline. You could also advance from the Rzhev pocket to Torzhok, cutting the only railroad out of the area the Soviets will have left after the forces near Velikiye Luki close the other one (the one that HQ is sitting on next to an unidentified Guards formation and an air base).

A human Russian player's reaction to PyleDriver's offensive plans would be "Go ahead, make my day!" Attacking headlong into the Russian strategic reserves reflects the unfounded contempt the German General staff still had for the Red Army in the spring of 1942. I don't know how well the AI will do but as a Russian player I would welcome the chance to re-organize and reinforce my weak southern wing while the Germans bang their heads against dug in rifle divisions. You can't expect too much from the AI but maybe in this AAR we'll see which army really was stronger in 1942. I'm on the side of the argument that says Blau was strategically correct but operationally mismanaged, and the OKH plan overly optimistic regarding the relative strength of the two armies. This AAR should be very interesting to follow.

This is going to be a very interesting AAR. I can't wait to see how the AI is going to counter Jon's offensive moves.

It began the War as a brigade but was expanded to a full division. This upgrade happens in the 41-45 campaign game.

Thanks Jaw you're absolutely right, as I just checked that on the net. It is just that all my old books say it was a brigade (Pilfousek I think), and that it was disbanded in 43 to rebuild the 1st Slovak infantry division. Just to think that I thought it was wrong as the 2nd Slovak motorized division in the first game (War in Russia). All thoughs years it used to rankle me when I ran across it in the game, and it was me that was wrong.

With the enormous contributions being made by Pavel and Trey plus input from testers and people on this forum, I think WitE will have one of the best orders of battle of any Gary Grigsby game. In the end I think everyone will agree that the long development has paid off in a game people will be able to enjoy for years to come.

We had a debate about the Slovak Fast Division a short while ago.

Well, on paper the southern half of the front was roughly equal in strength to the northern half, so he won't be attacking into all the strategic reserves. The Axis are also close to Moscow to begin with. Also: the Soviets were still basically no match for the Germans in 1942, that has little to do with optimism on the German side, but more with the very slow reorganization of the Soviet armed forces to try and iron out the many deficiencies.

This is an excellent way to show off what this game has got!  I'm really looking forward to your AAR and the game itself of course!  Thanks for taking the time to do this!

I can't really remeber it completly, but i am pretty sure i read about the german units near Moscow (mainly AGC)were quite exhausted and lost most of their vehicles and heavy equipment and were nowhere ready for another assault.

I guess Pyledrivers strategic targets are very optimistic, but we'll see how it works out :)

Hoth's 4th PzA cracks open a front 50 miles wide and send 4 divisons retreating and routing another. This ss shows only the opening attacks. It also shows how you can veiw many info modes at once (three in this case)...Hoth did request two better PzC commanders, Balck (48th PzC) and Hube (24th PzC), which were granted...

I want to show another neat tool for info. In Lee's AAR I spoke of it but one more ss won't hurt. The box (yellow arrow) toggles in 6 modes, none, morale, experence, supplies, fuel, and units attached. I shows up in the top left corner of a unit (green arrow). In this case Im in units attached mode and lets me know how many are there (red arrow). Green means none, yellow one, orange two, and red three. The same four colors reflect levels in the othe modes. So I don't have to click on units to find where my support units are just toggle that mode...Anyway 6th army is gearing up to crush the line...

PyleDriver,

Thanks for sharing this new AAR of year two. Your plan for 1942 goes to one of the great "what if's" of the war in the east. What would have happened had the Germans moved against Moscow rather than attacking toward the Volga and into the Caucasus? I'm anxious to see how the AI handles the Soviet forces in these circumstances.

The amount of information readily available to the player is a clear indication of the thought and hard work that's gone into the game so far.
