BATTLE OF SANTA CRUZ ISLAND BAT REPORT, MAY 2ND, 1942 ADM. OSAMI NAGANO, IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY GENERAL STAFF CHIEF Battle of Santa Cruz Island began April 22nd, 1942 when a H6K4 Flying boat reported heavy enemy naval activities at Santa Cruz Island with several enemy Task Forces heading north/north west from Espiritu Santo Islands. I-15 Float Plane reported enemy warships heading north, beaming 300, speed 12 the same day hours later. SUBRON1 was ordered to sent as many submarines as available to shadow and destroy enemy forces following Combined Fleet war doctrine. At April 22nd, only two submarines were on patrol at Santa Cruz Island (I-15 & I-28, SUBRON1 -SUBDIV3-). In the mind of this HQ was the posibility of landings at Salomon Islands and orders to 11st air fleet were dispatched at once in order to reinforce the air assets in the area. April 25th, I-28 float plane reported the sighting of enemy carrier near Utua Island. With 6 submarines in the area our forces were put on top alert and general quarters sounds in all ground, air and navy forces at South Seas... Three days after the first sighted this news only can mean the landings at Santa Cruz Islands to use them like jumping point to assault Salomon Islands. With CARDIV1, CARDIV2, CARDIV3 and CARDIV5 with Mobile Force at Western Australia, the only available carrier was HIJMS HOSHO, docked at Truk after escorted 14th Infantry Division from Manila. With 10 A6M2 and 10 B5N2 on her deck, the old carrier departure with clear orders to provoke allied carrier to fall into the range of 11st Air Fleet land based torpedo bombers from Munda. Orders to transfer 25th Air Flotilla from Port Moresby were dispatched inmediately and 27 L3Y1, 18 Ki-58 and 6 H6K4-L2 began the airlift from Port Moresby to Munda. Kanoya Ku K-1 was requested from 23rd Air Flotilla to be transfered to South Seas, and this Daitai was transfered from D.E.I. to Port Moresby and then to Munda. AT Saipan, 6th Ku S-1 with 45 A6M2 was transfered to Truk - Rabaul and finally to Munda to be our escort assets for our twin engine torpedo-bombers. Chitose Ku S-1 had been transfered few days before and launched several sweeps over Ndeni to get air supremacy over Santa Cruz Northern islands (Ndeni mainly). April 26th, our submarines got the first success with torpedo of XAK AM.Leader damaged by I-7. April 27th xAK Henry S. Grove was sunk for the same boat, and USS SABINE (AO) was sunk by I-173 at April 28th. This day was the first that our chitse Ku S-1 daitai launched the first agressive sweep over Ndeni. April 29th, I-168 unsuccesfully engaged USS YORKTOWN. Orders to departure for BATDIV1 were inmediately dispatched to VADM INOUYE, 4TH FLEET CINC. HIJMS NAGATO with her cruisers and destroyers receive orders to head south to rendezvous with CarDiv4 and await air supremacy to launch a night surface attack against landing forces. HIJMS HOSHO was ordered to reach a position about 320 nm northwest of enemy carriers to provoke enemy reaction, if enemy reacted to us our land based G4M1/G3M2 would launch a massive torpedo attack to sent enemy to the bottom. HIJMS NAGATO TG (BatDiv1) would rendezvous after the engagement and will sweep northern Santa Cruz Island to destroy all enemy transports with devils americans onboard. Our great success come from I-15 when torpedoed and sunk USS HORNET near Vanikoro island. A great troop transport was sunk by I-3 (AP TASKER H. BLISS). The same day the air transfer of 25th air flotilla end and all our plans changed after the sinking of enemy carrier. For sure enemy would flee inmediately unable to cover with LRCAP their landings. Orders were dispatched to HIJMS HOSHO to a fast air strike against enemy ships off Ndeni if they keep anchored there. The next day, May 1st 1942, CARDIV 4 launched two air strikes coordinated with land based 25th Air Flotilla (now torpedoes armed) assets. Several air strikes sent to bottom 2 enemy troop transports and damages on another three. IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY, 4TH FLEET.
