FROM: VADM. S.INOUYE, 4TH FLEET CINC. TRUK TO: ADM. ISOROKU YAMAMOTO, COMBFLEET CINC. KURE. SUBJECT: SOUTH SEAS REPORT DATE: JUNE 1ST, 1942 Woodlark Island is reported be bombed by enemy 4Es. Later in the night a second raid was reported over the same garrison in this Island (6 B17). 06 B-17E were intercepted over Munda by our Ki-45 KAI twin engine fighters (IJAAF), 2 of them was downed by enemy defensive fire. No hits or damages were reported on our facilities. Our Flying boats reported two enemy ships spotted several days ago in the Vanikoro Island area are two Flush Deck escort destroyers. I-18 was damaged by a dutch destroyed (PIET HEIN) near Santa Maria Island after be pinged by her for hours. Light damages onboard, our submarine will go on with her war patrol. SUBRECON REPORTS: I-17 recon mission over Efate: Enemy ships spotted docked : 3 DM, 2 CM and 1 XAK, another 3 unidentified ships. 24 fighters, 26 bombers and 39 auxiliar aircrafts on airfield (near 90 AC) RO-64 recon mission over Luganville: Enemy ships spotted docked: 5 XAK and another 4 unidentified ships. 6 ground units and 25 fighters, 22 bombers and 48 auxiliar aircrafts (near 100 AC) I-10 recon mission over Vanikoro Island: 10 fighters and 7 auxiliar aircrafts identified with 2 ground units like garrison. I-1 recon mission over Ndeni Island: 5 auxiliar aircrafts and 6 ground units with near 10.000 american troops. Air Strikes over Ndeni: 25th Air Flotilla at Munda sent several waves to strike Ndeni, like bellow: - 1st wave, an air sweep with 40 A6M2 reported no enemy fighters on CAP. - 2nd wave, 41 A6M2 escorting 39 G4M1 reported 1 airbase and 14 runway hits on airstrip. - 3rd wave, 21 G4M1 reported 1 port hit. - 4th wave, 13 G4M1 bombed port facilities. - 5th wave, a sweep with 6 A6M2 reported no fighters on CAP over Ndeni. - 6th wave, a sweep with 17 A6M2 reported no enemy on CAP. ASW report at South Seas: A dutch boat was reported hit by a D3A1 flying from Vella LaVella. Many sub contacts were reported by our air and surface assets at salomon Seas. long Live to the Emperor !
