Turn 33 - 4/13/40

FRANCE: Reinforcements - 2. Armee Gendarmeries & reconstituted 2 Cav Corps

Invasion of Poland (begins May 10) -
  • Imperial Guard advances to Danzig and swings south to effect the encirclement of Poznan and begin the siege of Warsaw
  • DB Legion fixes Polish army west of Poznan
  • 1. Armee fixes Polish army west of Breslau and Lodz
  • 5. Armee occupies Czechoslovakia (from end of April) before occupying Krakow and Southern Poland and besieging Lodz and Warsaw from the south

2. Armee immediately advances to contact in the Austrian Alps and further orders are dependent on the strength of the reaction from the Italian, Romanian, and Hungarian armies.

I tried to sink the Polish and Danish fleets to facilitate the eventual amphibious landing in Copenhagen, but it ended in catastrophe.

ALLIES: The BEF recaptured Barcelona.

Turn 35 - 4/27/40

My incursion into Spain has not been successful, so I'll withdraw to the border for now.

The Romanians and Hungarians have responded with what I estimate to be 1/4-1/3 of their combined force.

The Poles have crossed the German border in some places as a deterrent; they have not engaged me.

The Greeks have mobilized.

A Soviet army has entered Finland. I will set up a chokepoint in the marshes and forests NE of Helsinki (Disclaimer: The Finns haven't activated yet though, so there's a fair chance that the Reds will steamroller me).

Turn 36 - 5/4/40

FRANCE: The 5. Armee has noted a major Romanian presence S of Prague. They will be unable to participate in the invasion of Poland.

To simulate the invasion commencing on May 10, I waited until all the attacks had been calculated to begin. Okay, so maybe I started a day or two ahead of schedule. If the Poles had been behind their borders like they were supposed to, it would have worked out more accurately.

ALLIES: The Hungarians lose a corps.

Turn 37 - 5/11/40

FRANCE: As you can see, the entire Polish army is surrounded and cut off from supply. Next turn my armor will take Warsaw.

A bit of trouble in the Alps.

Finland is ready.

Turn 39 - 5/25/40

FRANCE: Poland surrendered. Allied supply dropped by 3. I forgot to mention that the penalty for Germany's surrender was 10 supply points.

Now for the master plan. Most of my men will keep doing their thing, while the Imperial Guard and 1. Armee plunge into the undefended nations to the south. The DB Legion will guard my flank against the Romanians and, to a lesser extent, Hungarians. Once they have surrendered, I can basically just pummel Italy into submission. At the same time, 1. Armee and the IG will deal with Bulgaria and Greece.

Finally, I'll be able to eliminate those pesky Spaniards. The last action of the year will probably be the siege of Gibraltar. I might consider an attempt to retake my colonies, but my current Sea Transport just isn't up to it. I'll need everything I can spare to deal with the Turks and Soviets anyway. And Yugoslavia is looking a lot like a raised dagger ready to cut into me from behind.

Oh, and then there's Norway and Sweden. And the Danes, reduced to Copenhagen. Well, not much I can do about them at the moment.

Allies: Soviets begin attacking in Finland. Where's the rest of the Finnish army?!

Turn 40 - 6/1/40

FRANCE: I attacked Budapest and won.

I've surrounded some Romanian cavalry and an army headquarters.

ALLIES: Soviets took Varhaus.

FRANCE: Reinforcements - the rest of the Finnish army.

I've surrounded at least half of the Romanian ground forces.

ALLIES: 22 Inf Corps surrenders near Barcelona.

Turn 42 - 6/15/40

FRANCE: Haha, Yugoslavia declared war on me! Ok - this just simplifies matters. Also, Albania is on my side (they're providing valuable moral support).

ALLIES: The Yugoslav army is HOLY CRAP GIGANTIC.

The Soviets just performed a 2-hex airborne landing.

Spanish infantry killed an entrenched Gendarmerie unit while taking minimal casualties. Really, Spain? Really?

Turn 43 - 6/22/40

FRANCE: Vast German Legion raised, to be sent to Spain. It will take at least a month to prepare and assemble this force.

The Bulgarians set up a large roadblock to discourage me from advancing toward Bucharest.

New Germany navy attacks Danish navy, fails because of enemy air support.

ALLIES: The Bulgarian roadblock is their whole army.

The primitive Danish destroyers did a fine job sinking the German heavy cruisers and battlecruisers.

2 Cav Corps basically destroyed.

Turn 45 - 7/6/40

FRANCE: The Bulgarian army is sizeable and is in danger of cutting off the units in Romania. My troops are all-around too tired and repairs on the German and Polish rail networks have not been going well.

Once those Romanians in Czech territory surrender, I'll take the 5. Armee and split the enemy force right down the middle, isolating the Italian peninsula.

ALLIES: Swedish 1st Army activates.

Bulgarian, Spanish, and Yugoslav victories.

Forgot to mention that I received a German industry bonus of 5 SP. My supply capability is around 50 now, as good as or better than the Allied stockpile.

Turn 48 - 7/27/40

FRANCE: Imperial Guard crippled by supply shortages. Elements of 1. Armee continue siege of Belgrade and succeed in capturing it.

German industry multiplies air and rail capacity more than two-fold.

The Bulgarians smashed my paratroopers and retook Sibiu.

Two Spanish infantry corps and one tank division are trapped in the Barcelona Pocket.

ALLIES: The units around Belgrade are in danger of being overrun by the Bulgarians and Romanians because I don't have a flank anymore.

One brutal clash in the Alps saw the Yugoslavs drive me back at the cost of a corps.

Turn 49 - 8/3/40

FRANCE: Reinforcements - 22 Inf Corps, 3. Armee & the Polish Legion; the Polish Legion will not participate in any current operations but will remain in Prussia until the day of the Soviet invasion.

Italy has effectively been cut off from the rest of Europe (by land). The Po River crossings are well-guarded,, however.

The Bulgarians are going to crumple my makeshift line, but I want to try for Sarajevo; the Yugoslav army is still much more powerful than the Bulgarian one. I did it!

ALLIES: The Norwegians have activated.

The Bulgarians eradicated a regiment of elite paratroopers.

Whole Yugoslav corps disintegrating before the 1st Guards Armored Corps.

Yugoslavia surrendered.

Progress in Spain.

2. & 3. Armees continue in Italy; DB Legion, Imperial Guard, and 1. Armee in Yugoslavia; 5. Armee to construct fortifications in Poland.

ALLIES: Italian corps evaporates.

FRANCE: Reinforcements - the Hungarian Legion; it will guard the Hungarian and Slovakian borders against the Soviets.

Polish industry boosted my supply by another 3 points.

ALLIES: A surprise raid on the German navy ended in several ships, including a battlecruiser, getting damaged.

Turn 52 - 8/24/40

FRANCE: Reinforcements - 24 Inf Corps

Production of 75mm AT guns, 120mm mortars, and the new AMX 13 tanks begins this turn. The new tanks have thin armor and the gun is a variant of the 75mm, but do have oscillating turrets and automatic loaders. AMX is currently designing a new 90mm cannon and a special, experimental anti-tank shell. They guarantee that it will have an almost 100% chance of slagging any AFV currently fielded by the Soviets or British. It should be ready for mass production in a little over half a year.

We've tasked some German company, Daimler Benz, with developing any armored vehicle based on pre-war projects and designs. It will be ready around the same time as the upgraded AMX 13, and it is uninspired to say the least. Understandable, given that they don't have our genius French designers. They haven't yet heard of the revolutionary new technologies incorporated into the AMX 13. It will be slower than the AMX by nearly a third, it will be more difficult to maneuver, it lacks a turret, and its main armament will be of an identical caliber. However, its armor is thicker, too thick for the enemy M5s and T-60s to penetrate in most circumstances.

Rome has a nominal garrison, so the 2nd Motor Corps raced forward to be the first to claim the city. Unfortunately, it appears Italy has raised some kind of emergency army. A whole army. In Rome.

The Portuguese are doing everything in their power to prevent my Germans from reaching Madrid.

ALLIES: The Portuguese have cut off a sizeable force on the coast.

Bulgarians lost a corps attacking Belgrade.

FRANCE: The new Italian 5th Army is waiting for an opportunity to strike.

The Portuguese army and the BEF have been surrounded. Madrid has fallen.

ALLIES: Massive Soviet defeat in Finland, 1067 for 27 squads. A corps was destroyed.

Reinforcements - 25 Inf Corps

Spain has surrendered. Lead units approaching Portuguese border.

I have occupied Tirana, which has a supply point. This should be helpful to the completely exhausted armies in the region, which have little access to supplies and have been fighting non-stop since May.

Nis taken, Sofia within arms' reach.

Portugal surrendered, as did the trapped BEF. The only target left on the peninsula to bring my armies to bear on is Gibraltar.

The Greeks have sent out half their army to slow down my advance. I will have to encircle and besiege Sofia (no supply point).

ALLIES: Bleh.

Turn 58 - 10/5/40

FRANCE: Reinforcements - 26 Inf Corps

After bleeding the Soviets in the swamps for several months, the Finnish army is ready to wipe out the invaders in one fell stroke.

ALLIES: A British colonial corps appeared out of nowhere and after an exceedingly short shootout forced the German Legion's surprised gendarmeries to lay down their arms (in Seville). In fact, it turns out the British reinforced the Gibraltar garrison with two corps recently.

Had to fire this one up a bit. Lack of rail repair&rail capacity does make this scenario quite annoying to play though...otherwise great scneario.

Oh, definitely. A trick I found, or maybe I'm just making patterns fit my preconceptions, is that the auto rail repair follows your rail unit around. And it seems to get the idea if you repair rail in cities only; I've seen it connect between specific chains of cities in just a few turns, whereas before it would have been random or seemingly failed to repair anything at all.

You're going to end up fighting the USSR anyway, so it's best to ignore Italy and Iberia and focus on getting one or two major routes operational in Eastern Europe.

Turn 60 - 10/19/40

FRANCE: Reinforcements - 4th Motor Corps, 2nd Supply Brigade, and the Croatian Legion, destined for Northern Romania.

The Greek division exited Sofia to reestablish a supply link to the defenders, leaving the city quite vulnerable. The garrison surrendered almost immediately, though the Bulgarian air force's last action resulted in a number of casualties.

The majority of the Italian 5th Army has been trapped in Central Italy, but unfortunately one full corps and the Army HQ have fortified Rome and are prepared to defend it. Having huge numerical superiority, I could certainly take the city, but casualties would be heavy and Rome itself would be utterly ruined.

British motor corps cut off from Gibraltar.

ALLIES: Another British corps is sent to Gibraltar. They try to push out, get flattened.

Reinforcements - 1 Recce Bde & 27 Inf Corps

Bulgaria surrenders.

I have been warned that this year's winter will be particularly severe.

The Finns have rounded up the last Soviet holdouts and are now moving north toward Murmansk.

Bucharest's garrison puts up a spectacular defense but in the end is forced to give up. The first AMX 13 tanks are destroyed in this engagement.

Turn 65 - 11/23/40

Reinforcements - 3 Recce Bde & the Spanish Legion; Romania?

So, there's a winter ceasefire. That means the sieges of Gibraltar, Murmansk, and Rome will have to wait. Well, I'd hoped to get all the objectives before the end of the year. So, there won't be any updates until the Soviet invasion, which is in about a year. I'll pop in on Turn 85 for a summary of the previous 20 turns and a report on new weapons.

From now to T116 I'll recieve 5 Pioneer brigades, 6 mechanized corps (including the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps), 5 AT brigades, 2 supply brigades, the 5th Guards Tank Corps, 2 armored reconnaissance brigades, and a Bf-109 unit.

The map:

My losses - as you can see, collaborationist armies represent a huge percentage of my manpower, perhaps eventually to the point of outnumbering the 6 standing French armies:

The Conquest of Europe T20 - T65:

The problem with this scenario is that the more you play the easier it gets...in fact, after Germany falls you should eb hacing quite an easy time.

I just brought Soviet Union to it's knees in 15 turns.

Hehe, but I'm not that fast - so it will be a bit more challenging, as you'll all see. But yes, by T116 you totally outmatch Elmer in everything but navy. Twice as many collaborationists as Frenchmen, obscene supply boosts, not to mention your technology is just plain better. You know what I'd be interested in trying? A PBEM version of this scenario - from the Soviet invasion. Both sides get a month for setup; assume all of mainland Europe occupied by France, all of North Africa occupied by Britain (who have two full colonial armies), Murmansk captured by Finland (but Soviet 1st Army is part of OOB, it reconstituted), Norway and Sweden still in the fight and can do whatever they want, and all French units at full strength (including all new equipments).

Turn 113/October 25th, 1941 Report

+2 SP from Spain
British receive two armies
T71 - Bulgarian Legion
T72 - Romanian Legion
Oil from Romania + 10 SP
Replacements up 16%
Reconstitution of 2 Cav Corps
T81 - Ceasefire Ends

All targets captured, but enormous casualties at Gibraltar - more than all
other operations that turn combined (1295 squads, 73 AFVs)

T83 - Fall of Athens

So now I get some more new weapons. There's been a breakthrough in the field
of SP artillery, and I get three very good systems - 105mm and 155mm SP
guns, and 120mm SP mortars. Another development is an 88mm gun designed for
use in both the AA and AT roles. Oh, and of course the new AMX 13s and the
German-designed assault gun, the Sturmgeschutz III. The Germans didn't put a
whole lot of thought into this one - they simply took the chassis from all
those Pz III we captured, improved the armor and added the 75mm barrels we
developed. Needless to say, High Command is not at all pleased. We'll take
200 of them and use them as the base for several AT brigades, and beyond
that will designate one German factory as responsible for their
construction.

I saw that the British are meant to land an army in Northern Spain, so I
used the British navy to occupy the port hexes. There are now 3 armored
corps, 3 motorized infantry corps, and 6 infantry corps in Spain. Of course,
they are unsupplied, but they still manage to capture Bourdeaux.

T88 - The British recaptured Gibraltar with troops from North Africa.
T92 - Italian Legion
T93 - Gibraltar retaken
T94 - Italy provides 3 supply and 4000 sea transport
T95 - British beachheads in Bilbao and Bourdeaux eliminated.
T96 - German navy sinks British aircraft carrier and a naval air wing but
all ships are destroyed or heavily damaged
T98 - The British navy completely flattens Cherbourg and disperses the
garrison. Coastal guns sink two heavy cruisers and numerous smaller craft.
T101 - Successful amphibious landing on and capture of Zealand Island
T104 - 3 Mech Corps lands in Casablanca

By now I've got all of North Africa up to El Alamein, but the remnants of the British 2nd Colonial Army need to be dealt with. I'm using the 3. Armee here (it's also my strategic reserve). The excessive amount of collaborationists has been touched upon, but it turns out that I've got so many armies opposite the Soviet and Turkish borders that I just couldn't find a place where 3. Armee would fit.

More on this and my grand strategy upon T115.

Turn 115 - 11/8/41 Evaluation

Much has changed since the beginning of the scenario. My armed forces - absolutely bloated with state-of-the-art weapons systems and "volunteers" from occupied countries. I probably outnumber the Allies in absolutely everything (except naval craft); ground forces are at more than 100000 squads strong, with 12000 guns (not including 1500 SPGs), nearly 14000 AFVs, and 8000+ aircraft (I estimate that's twice as many as the Allies have: AS in the 90s vs. their 30s).

Leningrad Campaign: The Finns will take Leningrad at all cost, at which point they will leave a token corps with orders to await the French in Novgorod. The rest of their army will head back west and invade Scandinavia. There are already some border guards in place in case the Swedes decide on a preemptive assault. Two infantry corps of 3. Armee will be "loaned" to the Finns upon the fall of Leningrad. A cavalry corps in Central Finland acts as a reserve and in an emergency can reach any part of the country within a week.

OOB: Finnish Armed Forces
Enemy OOB: Minimal resistance outside of Leningrad expected

Operations Philippe Auguste & L'Orient: This is the real deal. Everything else is a sideshow. The capitulation of Turkey and the USSR will pave the road to total domination of Europe. There are three sectors here, each containing an army group. Army Group North and Army Group Center will deal with the Soviet Union, while AGS's purview is Western Asia. My soldiers have faced most of Europe's armies, and as such constitute the most experienced (not to mention well-equipped) force on the planet. However, of the collaborationist armies (9 Puppet Legions - Dutch-Belgian, Polish, Bulgarian, Croatian, German, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian, and Spanish), only the Germanic troops have seen combat. The first turn of the invasion I will wait for the Soviet and Turkish reactions, but T117 the offensive proper begins.

OOB: 5 French armies, 9 "Minor" armies, 7782 planes in 39 units (3 air armies, 7 puppet air forces)*
Enemy OOB: 10? Armies, soon dozens of reconstituted units, possible event

*Note that puppet air forces are attached to the same army group as their respective ground forces.

Operation Philippe Auguste -
  • AGN - the 2. Armee and puppets in Prussia will fix the Soviets around Vilnius and Minsk and attempt to slip a few units around enemy lines to take control of the Baltic region and link up with the Finns in Novgorod; 5. Armee will push aside the Soviets and envelop as many as possible with the help of the rest of AGN, though the main body will link up with AGC in Kiev and then head straight for Moscow
  • AGC - Romanians and Hungarians fix the Soviets in Eastern Poland and Ukraine; then, the entire Imperial Guard will punch through Bessarabia with extreme force, leave the rest of AGC to deal with (preferably encircle) the Soviets in the Ukraine, cross the Dnieper, and race to Moscow

Operation L'Orient - AGS needs to get a foothold in Anatolia as fast as possible, as a strong force defending Istanbul and the Strait of Marmara could hold me up indefinitely; from there it is a hop, skip, and a jump to Ankara, and much of the Turkish army is scattered throughout their country, so it should take some time for them to organize a coherent defense - enough time for me to take the capital; after that's done, AGS will occupy Syria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and advance as far as Rostov, Astrakhan, and Stalingrad

It is an ambitious plan, but I need to take out the Soviet Union before T135. Between turns 135 and 150, the Soviets get 11 full armies, including 5 Guards armies; I'll certainly prevail eventually, but casualties will be much higher and the timetable for the invasion of Britain will be endangered, possibly resulting in a draw endgame.

Operation Pyramid: Not really anything specific. It'll begin whenever I decide to eliminate the surrounded elements of the British 2nd Colonial Army. First 3. Armee will cut off El Alamein and defeat the garrison, and then attempt to individually surround all the non-supply hex targets in Egypt. If the Turkish thrust seriously bogs down, 3. Armee will recapture Syria.

Unit Hall of Fame: Many of my units are highly experienced (classified as having >80% proficiency)
