I set my planes to Naval Comabat (bombers) and Escort duty (fighters) and they spread out over all the possible contacts in range to attack. (bug?)
I want to descide on which target I will attack and overwhelm with most of my force (kinda like what real Admierals of the age did.) I dont want 9xdauntless and 5x fighters to attack two DDs. While 2x torpedo planes attack a CV. Now every other plane hangs back for CAP or does (seemingly) nothing?!?

I need to control my Carrierborne Airstrikes, specifically.
Specifically what group of planes to what target.
Can this be done?

Also, a BB/CV group is one HEX away from my CVN/CAx4 on the map. It is the start of my turn. I want to attack the BB/CV, but when I ordered them to go one HEX to the BB/CV, they where gone. How does a player attack a computer player when he is right next to you, but between turns?

You don't.

You put a good admiral in charge, set most of your planes on Naval Attack, some on search missions, and hope that the computer admiral makes the right choice.

They usually do.

If you're having problems, let us know what type of settings you have for your squadrons.

I'm with you there. I had a CV TF ignore a reported IJN CV TF bearing down on it, to go after a reported IJN surface action force.
My TF took a beating there, not to mention my keyboard that got clobbered in frustration.
Seeing how you are allowed to micromanage in almost everything else, I'm amazed you are denied this most basic of commands. Still a great game!

I do also wish I had more control over what my CV's attacked. If my attacks had been more concentrated and focused I might not have the Saratoga on the bottom right now.
I also have some land based TBM's that have been set to Naval attack for at least 12 turns and still only attack land targets suffering uneedful losses everytime. I had set their secondary targets to "rest".
I really am over joyed when I have all my land based air set to naval attack and the only air that does is 3 B25j's which fly to their deaths. This happened when the enemy Cv TF was only 10 hexes away from Lunga. I think this was in range for the dive bombers and torpedo planes. This game is pretty cool but methinks there is still some work to do.

Yeah, but this is UV, guys, you know what idiots and cowards your subordinates are. You can only hang so many of 'em from the highest yardarm in the fleet (over the years, I would have had nobody higher ranking than a chief petty officer survive, if I had my way). When, for example, Barbey, Wilkinson, or Turner flat out refuses to land his troops despite my direct orders, I want to pull out a knife and shoot 'im.

My knives must all be duds because they never fire. I have to actually stick them in things. :)

As to hitting every available target in range... that usually happens with the more agressive leaders. If you don't want that, try using a less agressive leader.

Well, I'm going to have to rethink this. I just don't understand letting only the computer control naval airstrikes. I just lost another carrier, this one in a SURFACE ACTION!. While covering an attempt to retake Gili Gili, I had a IJN BB group sail right up to my CV task force under observation by search planes the whole time. Land based aircraft did manage to throw 3 B26's at it, but instead my 2 CV's completely ignored it. I was sure I had screwed the settings up, but upon checking, everying was set for naval strikes. The weather was reported clear by the 3 nitwit B26's, so this has got me baffled.

Did you have your CVs sitting in the Gili Gili hex with the transports?

No, I was about 2 hexes south (trying to stay out of range of land based bombers). This is a great game, but it has a few frustrating quirks and in my humble opinion this is the biggest.
I read a post somewhere, that you are supposed to be a theater comander, so you would not be ordering individual naval airstrikes. Unforturtunately, that argument is not valid, because you are allowed to micromanage every other type of airstrike or use of air assets. Most of the time the AI does a pretty good job, but when it drops the ball, it's a pretty big thud. The last thud I heard was the Wasp hitting the ocean bottom.
Anyway, I may be a lone voice in the wilderness, but put me down for being able to control my own naval airstrikes.

There is nothing commun between a strike on a land target (no time constraint - decision can so be taken by High Command) and a naval strike following a more or less accurate search report ... in which the strike or no strike decision must be immediate - and no time for the Admiral to ask Noumea/Brisbane what to do !!!!!

Moreover, the game is designed with PBEM in mind, it means no players input during turns

If you want to play a fleet admiral, just order Carrier at War ;)

Excellent Game that`s still available, sadly really dated Graphics and no sound with the newer Win OS`s. ( May not even run under XP ? )

That one is a real candidate for a face lift & expansion IMO Matrix...

Since Matrix is now working with SSG on the Korsun Pocket, maybe we can hope for an improved Carrier at War by SSG & Matrix
