Not familiar to me as I did not play it. But the looks imply ASL :)

Did the hex side road pattern give it away?

No, the small map colors and layout. And MRs earlier hints.

I never played ASL but these maps would be good for some small scale infantry focused scenarios. (Once the major infantry issue is solved that is...)

Yes, actually Squad Leader rather than Advanced Squad Leader. But close enough! I'm working on an adaptation of Hill 621. I also plan to update adaptions of Hedgehog of Peipsk and Capture of Balta.

I know these won't be to the taste of many, but Squad Leader was one of my favorite games quite a few years ago. If things go well I'll post a link to this one in a few days. I also plan to make a template for the map for use with the Random Battle Generator.

Thanks
rick

Rick,
Most excellent. The mini-map gave it away for me in a shot. The main map then made sense. This was one of my favorites. I look forward with great anticipation to your recreation of Hill 621. I share your fondness for SL and, of course, ASL. They finally reduced the battle to the scale I had been hoping for all along. Even Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader were not small enough in scale - I wanted squads, individual leaders, individual vehicles, etc. SL was pretty much a dream come true back then. Then computers came along and things got even more incredible.

There are some really great memories with that one, Lt. Stahler and Sgt. Hamblen pulling back in the face of hordes of Soviet tanks, among them the terrifying SU-152 Zvierboi. Russian infantry over-running the rear guard posted to sacrifice themselves for their comrades. AT guns being rushed to hunting positions, a counterattack with Mark IV tanks into the flank of the enemy.

Yep, I could go on and on about that one. Usually there was some desperate last-gasp stand on the heights, hand-to-hand infantry struggles and desperate morale checks before close-assaulting the Red armor.

I remember you mentioning that you were working on this one a while back. The map looks pretty good. I always wondered what it would be like in 3D. This is really nice. Thanks for your efforts.

A view from Hill 621

Actually this was the first test run. The Soviet AI never got much closer than this, and German player gained a victory with minimal losses. I've tweaked some things a little and I'll try this again. Much like Heinrich, I recall this being a much closer battle. I'm going to see if I can get close to that feel with PCO.

Thanks
rick

Didn't SL have absolute LOS blocking woods terrain? So your units could only fire through gaps and the manuvering units could hide in the blocked hexes until they were close.

That's a good point, I hadn't considered that when I was building the map. I think I will recheck my woods and make sure they are dense enough to be a significant LOS block. I am using a combination of 3D models, brush and vegetation to block LOS in Woods terrain right now.

Thanks

Grass can give you as much LOS restriction as you want.

Yes, SL had absolute blocking woods. ASL introduced various depth of wooded terrain that would allow for certain types to be "seen" into and through.

Good Hunting.

Not everything is tanks and infantry. Add a little steam to the maps.

Nice engine, once it is released I could use it for one of my maps.

Mobius are going to do a coal car for it?
