Hi everybody,

a thread in the general forum about linked games brought back some long lost memories. Does anyone else here remember when in the nineties Gary´s Pacwar and carrier strike were the latest games of the pacific theater?

I remember that one guy in those days had a fascinating idea and started a project. The idea was, if a carrier battle was imminent in Pacwar, you would save the game and start an external program. This would load the save from Pacwar and save it as a carrier strike save. (Both games had very similar save formats)

Then you would start carrier strike and play the carrier battle on a tactical level, after the battle you would save and reimport the result into pacwar.

Unfortunately the project never was finished. It was released as some kind of a beta and I was able to export battles from Pacwar and play them, but the reimport into pacwar never worked.

The author was one of the pacwar modders in those days and its a pity that there is nothing left of these old sites like the famous pacwar list or the old thegamers.net, where some guys started to mod sp2ww2, pacwar or WIR. They now are known as Matrix

Well, for me its a fascinating idea to play AE and when a carrier/surface battle is imminent you change to a tactical programm and play it out. Ok, I admit that a game would take a few years more but who cares...

I´ll have to live with the fact that some dreams never will come true

Best wishes

Rainer

And don't forget to get your Advanced Squad Leader games out to replay EVERY land battle.
After all, individual squads ARE in the game so....

I remember playing "Carrier Force"

You just can't reproduce the suspense waiting for the combat portion of the game to load from the floppy after you've gotten a radar warning of incoming enemy aircraft during the orders phase.

I remember playing Grigsby's Guadalcanal campaign for days on an Apple II+.

The computer was right next to the family radio and I figured out that I could pick up EMI from the computer on some of the lower AM bands. The various electronic "chirps" and "chortles" eventually translated to the computer AI forming up TFs and planning air raids that added an interesting dimension to solitaire play.

As far as naval games, I'm almost glad that I didn't get involved in PacWar. The only one that captured my interest was the Harpoon series.

CIV and CIV II must have cost me a full grade point average in College.

I remember played advanced squad leader and Strat-O-Matic baseball in the late 70's! Hours of fun until the dog knocked all the pieces off the board

The original AH Midway and Guadalcanal I bought back in `72. Still have both, plus about 40+ others, SPI, VG and such.

Every now and then I take one them out. And with Vassel I can play them on the computer. Don't have to worry about messing up the board.

I bought PacWar and CIV on the same trip to Egghead Software in Virginia Beach, many years ago. I was playing them on a 286 computer.

I seem to remember that Gary would update PacWar from time to time and you could download it from bulletin boards.

So, what's the phone number to get that mod?

I think there were some people doing similar with Harpoon and TOAW when the web came along but I'm old enough to be confused.

I think I owned about every AH/VG title there was. My parents had no problems purchasing these games for me - because for the low low price of 50$, I would stay quiet and focused for hours and hours and hours... and plus, learning how to do all those odds calculations was very instructional for a young man growing up.

Although back in the day. $7.00 for most any SPI game. AH Bookcase game were a bit more I think $15.00 or $18.00. The other AH games were around $7.00. Again that was in the early `70's. Boy that was many snows ago.

Also a favorite. Also the last Guadalcanal AH put out. To bad I didn't get the General with the expansion for Coaral Sea. It was sold out.

Do any of you remember rules of engagement by omnitrend?  A tactical space combat game.  It was supposed to be able to link to breach, a game of boarding combat.  You would fight a tactical battle and when you boarded a ship you would switch to breach to resolve the boarding action then return to rules of engagement to finish resolving the tactical battle.  I have seen other games that had similar switch to other types of combat but they were part of the main game not separate games.  Only other game that would have been incredible if the tech and been up to it (but it wasn't) was the electronic battlefield of Spectrum Holobyte.  The electronic battle field would have been still in use today if it could have been worked out.

Total War: War in the Pacific? :)

Good way to make this game take ten years to play one game.

Mhh, was this the one that involved Falcon 4.0? I believe to remember that they tried to combine different weapons on a common battlefield like the F 16, A10 and ground troops like the M1. Maybe I just mix it up with the Multiplayer of Falcon 4.0 which was absolutely great but unfortunately a bit unstable...

It is so long ago, I had a 386/33 or 486/66 in those days and the LAN had to be set up completely manually using DOS 6.0

I played the old SSI "Guadacanal" "Bomb alley" and
North Atlantic 86" until my poor old Apple II+ melted down.

My fondest memories of computer games came from those days. I can still remember chasing down the Yamato all the way to Truk and putting some 20+ torps into her before she finally sank. The buzzing sound of each torpedo hit still rings in my ears to this day.

Ketza, there was a time when you could find an Apple II emulator that would turn your expensive and fast PC into an archaic beast that could still run these old gems.....

I remember playing {and still have stored somewhere} Star Fleet Battles when it came in a small 36 page booklet with extremely fine print.  I had to get a job at a local game store when I was young in order to fund my hobby.  Saved more on the emplyee discount than I ever made working.

PacWar singlehandedly dropped my GPA just enough to keep me from graduating with honors. Play 'til 0400, get up at 0600, drive to class. Oops, what did you say, Dr.???

I also remember my longest standing friend and I imbibing, and managing to empty a fifth of Turkey 101 playing WSIM until the wee hours.

I'll never forget the day I finally convinced my dad to play AH Midway against me when I was 10. He promptly kicked my ass red and asked "Do you want to play anything else?" And went about his business.

The answer was obviously "No". lol

Yep.

Back when Falcon 3.0 was big I remember networks of up to 16 computers used by pilots when they were deployed to play Falcon 3.0 as a squadron. The ability to fly and fight as a team was awesome. When you looked at Spectrum Holobytes long term plans. releasing a flight sim for different aircraft, tank sims, ship sims, AAA/Sam sims all linked on a virtual battle field. The idea of a complete strike package made up of human players flying a mission against human defenders and targets was too cool. I had the F-16, A-10 and Mig-29 simulators played them all quite a bit. Back in the day they were very popular in the Air Force. I was hoping for a 15c/d or vark sim but really enjoyed the vacuum and hog sims while waiting.
