PH report from the 12/7 turn of my very first Grand Campaign game ever! (Of course against AI) And as you can see, midgets not neccessarily are deemed to be worthless! And the overall results don't seem to be too bad either, for a beginner/greenhorn like me....

One game against the AI I managed to get 4 to attack, and 3 to register hits...too bad that was a mod test run and it eventually had to be restarted. LOL

Last night the Chicken of the Sea sank USS Coughlan in the Thousand mile war scenario with a midget! That's the 1st I've seen.

I've routinely seen midget success at PH, but not been able to replicate outside of that.  I suspect (opinion only here), that the odds are a bit influenced on midgets for the first day.  I've tried many, many times to repeat later in the war and have not had success.  I've read a few others here on the forum with similar tales, though a couple have had one or two successes.

At the end of WW2 the Japs planned on using large numbers of midget subs (mostly Koryu and Kairyu) to defend the home islands. Has anyone tried this strategy in the game? If yes - what was the result?

How many attacks did you try? Just curious, that's 3 VPs per attack because the midget is almost always lost.

I have never used midgets because they seem to be about as effective as IRL

Yes, they are pretty expensive and have not yet met with sucess in my pbemail game. But then again, after the patch my PT boats have done little and I have lost about 50 of them.

Not to defend the home islands, but as port / harbor defense, I think they can be useful annoyances. My experience with these is mainly in the Thousand Mile scenario, but they still held the attention of my opponent's ASW assets. They also got off shots (missing, naturally) on several warships.

The ports and harbor defenses of the Home Islands. Outside of Kiska, where else did they deploy them? (Please don't say Iwo or Okinawa , as Japan did/does regard them as part of the Home Islands).

I Posted on my AAR the following issue regarding Midget SS:

I have three I-Boats (-16, -18, and -20) in Cam Rahn Bay as well as nine midgets. I formed a Midget SS TF and found the TF wouldn't load the Midgets. Assumed that I needed to create the Midgets FIRST, then load them, and finally sail. Did I miss anything?

Additional question: When the Midgets are released, I assume my I-Boats are not in danger of running into minefields at that hex. Right?

Thanks and sorry for the hijack...

John,

Why not release the midgets a hex away from the (mined) target hex? I wouldn't assume that the I-boats are immune to mines if they're present in a hex.

Midget subs must be released in the target hex. The carrier I-Boats tend to stay outside the minefields - but are not 100% immune.

Midget subs must be released in the target hex. The carrier I-Boats tend to stay outside the minefields - but are not 100% immune.

Thanks, Don.

This explains why I've been having such a hard time releasing midgets!

"NOT 100% immune..." This doesn't do much for my confidence! Thanks a lot Don...

Any idea as to why my I-Boats won't load the Midgets?

Nope, if you can't figure it out, go ahead and post a save in the tech support forum.

Your forming the wrong taskforce type John 3rd. Your forming Midget Submarine TF's when you should be trying to form Midget Sub Carrier taskforces.

I have seen midget sub attacks in Trincomelee, Colombo, and 'Frisco, all successful.

At the end of WW2 the Japs planned on using large numbers of midget subs (mostly Koryu and Kairyu) to defend the home islands. Has anyone tried this strategy in the game? If yes - what was the result?

Not to defend the home islands, but as port / harbor defense, I think they can be useful annoyances. My experience with these is mainly in the Thousand Mile scenario, but they still held the attention of my opponent's ASW assets. They also got off shots (missing, naturally) on several warships.

The ports and harbor defenses of the Home Islands. Outside of Kiska, where else did they deploy them? (Please don't say Iwo or Okinawa , as Japan did/does regard them as part of the Home Islands).

Midget subs formed part of ‘Special Attack Units’ based at various locations – in harbours or in coastal caves/bunkers - along the Japanese coastline. The First Special Attack Unit (Kairyus) was based at Ajiro, for example, and the Third Special Attack Unit (Koryus) was formed at Sasebo. I don’t think most midget subs had been deployed to their bases by the time of the surrender. Most Kairyus, for example, were built at Yokosuka N.Y. The majority of them were still at Yokusuka, or hidden in inlets on the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula, when the war ended. The Japanese had planned on sending most of them to Kyushu and Shikoku.
