Have you considered including the 12th Army?

I completely forgot about KG 1001 Nacht.
12th army will be included. I just have to make up my mind about whether it should be locked in place until it moved towards Berlin, or enter as reinforcements.

Back to working on the map. Will hopefully finish the northern half of Berlin today. The rail network is a nightmare to get right!

Keep it going!

What about Auto Contouring Off? Makes it a lot easier when you have that much parallel/adjacent raillines.

Det is die Berliner Straßenbahn, wa?

....Btw, are you sure this railnet isn't the Berlin tram and/or subway?

Auto-contouring is off for everything except the farm land. I don't even use it for forests. It nearly drove me to drink before i figured out that i could turn it off!

I am 90% certain that it is not the trams I'm building. The base map is a Luftwaffe one, and i don't see why they would put that kind of thing on it. Further, the map does show stations, and there aren't that many of them in Berlin itself, also the net as depicted is fully connected to lines leading out of the city. And lastly, The symbology(wrong word?) of the map classifies all the lines as
quote:

Haupt u. vollspurige Nebenbahn
, or
quote:

Kleinbahn u. schmalspurige Nebenbahn
.

Hm, okay tram lines would most probably not have been shown on a Luftwaffe map.

..but "Kleinbahn u. schmalspurige Nebenbahn" however could be a tram.. Nevertheless. I found a map from 1936, this was the closest i could get towards the beginning of the war. The next map on the site is from '47, comparing both maps it looks like the net didn't change during that period..

The thick black lines are the subway.

Thinner lines are normal surface tram lines.

EDIT: Oh and i forgot, the map is from here: http://www.berliner-verkehr.de/snetze.htm

Thanks for the link!

I can't find any relation between my map and the tram lines. I'm not entirely sure about the surface trams, but i figure if they do end up in the game, it is no big deal, as they could conceivably be used to move troops about. Either way, as far as i can tell, the axis rail capacity should be fairly minimal by this stage anyway.
The map I'm using is indeed published by the Luftwaffe, and is an actual Fliegerkarte, which, i guess, makes it even more unlikely that subways should show up.

Taking longer than i thought it would, but slowly Berlin is taking shape. Here is the north-west corner. Maybe i will have the time and patience to do more tomorrow

It's been a while. Much longer than i thought, but I'm back working on this. Finished Berlin today.

The green space in the corner of the mini-map is all that's left to do from this map sheet. When that's all done we'll see if the battle of Berlin will fit, otherwise I'll have to extend the map a bit. When it's finished it will be 82x83 hexes at this stage.

I don't know how much of this helps, but it won't hurt so...

I collected a few documents relating to the Battle of Berlin for a Close Combat 5-mod a few years ago. Tank strengths, unit deployment maps and other tidbits of information. I've made them available here:

my suggestion, enter as reinforcement by event if the Soviets come within a certain distance from Berlin

Still working (slowly) on this. The first map-sheet is done. I need to add some names for the Berlin area, and it is not big enough to fit Konev's armies on, so I'll need to extend it a bit further south. At the moment I've just overcome the distortion issue when fitting two map-sheets together. I am extending the map north to include the coast line for estethical reasons. Once that's done it will get extended south to include Konev's front, and east as far as the eastern bank of the Elbe. That, incidentally solves the 12th army dilemma. I'll go with having them locked in place with the OOB they had at the time they were committed to the eastern front. They will be released according to Silvanski's idea, when the Soviets get to a certain point. If i'm unlucky, the map will need extending east as well, to fit in all of the Red Army, but i think it will fit.

The OOB needs to be partially redone. I'm not happy with what i did last summer. I've gathered more information, and have very detailed OOB and set-up for the Ninth army. I even have strength reports from the 15th of April! Not sure it will help make a good scenario, but it makes me feel good I don't as much details for the rest of the Germans, but close enough. The Russians i haven't started yet. Might have to invest in some books to find the missing data there. That, however is for the future!

I've changed my mind about the start date. New plan is to start the scenario on the 16th, when the Berlin operation started in Zhukov's sector. Koniev and Rokossovsky will be on the map, locked in place until their historical start date.

Finally, i'm debating whether or not to use a custom database. I'm quite partial to one of the WWII ones that has Volkssturm squads, etc.

I've uploaded a map image here. It's 15MB. Have a look if you're interested. Any comments are welcome! Here's the link.

Looks great!
I would go for the custom database, extra work but things like Volkssturm squads, etc. can help doing fine adjustments by changing their values & replacement rates.

Thanks for the flattering reactions to the map.

Now here's a question i came up with while i was supposedly dealing with piles of work i brought home with me;
My source states that the Berlin garrison included up to 200 battalions of Volksturm. That's all good. I'll figure out a way to group them logically and reduce the ant-count. However, the men in these units displayed a certain lack of fighting will. In fact, most sources have most of them melting away at the first opportunity. If i set them in a different color scheme from the rest of the German troops, is it possible to set a plague percentage that will just affect them?

Good idea, but no, it can't be done. Suggest maybe giving them a very low unit proficiency, and tick them to not reconstitute and not get any replacements.

You might want to consider the possibility that they fell below the military horizon, so to speak.

That is to say, they shouldn't be represented as units at all. If a Soviet unit advancing into their location wouldn't be significantly impeded, then they shouldn't be on the map.

Or simply put some crap in them so they are no match except maybe for the weakest Russian units.

e.g. 19th century rifled-musket squads, lancers but panzerfausts, too. :) I'd use them as emergency garrison troops who pop up when the russkies are too close; after all; they still control a ZOC and can't be ignored.

Ok, I'm back working on this. If any of my PBEM opponents are reading this, sorry.

About the Volkssturm, new sources seem to reduce the number to about 40-80 battalions. They also say that the eastern front volkssturm fought about as well as many of the wehrmacht units.

I think i might set a plague on all the German units, starting 2-3 days after the Soviet attack. It seems most units just melted away more or less quickly.

I don't think any of the German units will reconstitute. If they were beaten up enough to evaporate, I don't see how they would be able to re-form in the chaos of refugees and Soviet advances. I would assume most of the survivors would drift off towards home or the Western Allies on the Elbe.

I've got my hands on "The Oder front 1945" by Hamilton, which includes a very detailed OOB, so that's one thing less to do. The map, however, is progressing slowly.

Will it stay a mix of German & English designations?

No, and I'm planning to standardize the abbreviations as well.

I have finished the coastline. Now working on extending the map as far as the Elbe.

German OOB is more or less finished, as soon as i can force myself to stop combing through the sources for units like Wach-Btl.Siemensstadt, LW.Wach.Btl.Berlin or Versuchs-Abt. Berlin Spandau. On the other hand i was very excited this evening to learn from a reliable source that Lds.Schtz.Btl.320
did indeed take part in the struggle against the Red Army, starting on 20 April.

Yes, yes, I'm nuts, and I'll never finish this thing. I know.

Speaking of coastline, any plan to incorporate an amphibious invasion?
Question is did the Russians have the capability to conduct such an operation, I don't know fact is it wasn't necessary but it could be a nice what if in case the Russian player is really not getting ahead at all.
