Hi,

In the colony management screen, the two columns "Value" and "Revenue" of my non-original colonies are always at 10K and 0. Is it a display bug or do I do something wrong ? My taxation on these planets seems to be useless.

(Also, I still don't understand why my cash suddenly go up and down without known reasons)

EDIT : BTW, I don't know for you, but the "engage enemy in system" doesn't work. I have a fleet in a planet A, in system X. Some units come to planet B in the same system X ; but my fleet stay still.

Value is based on population and luxuries I think - basically it's development.
For newer colonies, you're pretty much not going to really be able to get any tax revenue - they need to develop and grow first.

Cash jumps around because Resort income, Ship building, and Spaceport revenue are variable.

Your Fleet may be just sitting around because you have other ships in the system which have already picked up the intercept mission.
You're sure the Fleet is set to the "Engage System Targets"?
I think there's three or four different settings.

1/ Hmm, I passed 15 years without seeing any changes. I've got around 100M inhabitants, and I think they should pay taxes :)

I have 40 colonies : 2 natives, and 38 with 10K in value and 0 in revenue (default). I'm worried...

3/ Maybe other ships indeed.

EDIT : Perhaps it's due to the cashflow of private, around 15-35K ; but I can't do anything to rise it :(

Wait until the population is at billion or so before taxing. The population grows quicker with less tax.

And isn't that weird that the value of the colony is still the same, 15 years after ?

when you military or private sector builds something it cost resources.
If the resources are picked up at another empires base it cost your treasury.
If another empire needs a resource that you have, a credit is given to your treasury.
If you find you are buying more off others than they are buying off you then try and get a free-trade agreement.

watch the freighters , cargo, and either mining bases or star ports for the transactions. 

for the value of a colony check the higher value colonies and watch the freighter traffic, especially other empires buying from you. One key in the game is trade. it will start wars as a disputed base costs the other empire money.

Ok, but all of my colonies are at 10K. Can someone confirm that I must have 1 billion inhabitants to win some money via taxes ?
I think it's a bit stupid to win 0$, even if you have 100M. Imagine a country without taxes, it can't survives.

I agree, the growth of the colonies is much too slow - newly founded colonies will take FOREVER (at least much longer than most games last) to develop into a taxable population. I hope this will be changed with the next expansion.

Colony growth in fine,if anything it is unrealistic that in 10 years you have so many planets with huge polulations..You should not just spam new colonies until you can afford to pay for them with your major planets.

You begin to get some tax collected when the pop is around 50-60 million but its such a small amount it won't make a difference to your reciepts. Also at this point I tend to see colonies rally ramping up their growth rate around this population level so its a trade off between a tiny bit of money or your colony population growing faster.

A member on this forum called Jeeves is coming out with a strategy guide soon which may help explain some of your questions better. Do a search on this forum about trade, I know the search function is rather poor but you should get some further pointers as there are a few rally good "how to" threads already.

The thing to remember here is what an ealier poster described. To get money concentrate on trade, that means that growing your colonies is more important than taxing them when their small as the bigger the population of a colony the more trade it produces.

Litjan, you agreen with a thing I don't :)
Growth colonies is realistic. In 20 years, you start at 15M and up at 200M ; it's fast enough. The weird thing is that we can't tax millions of inhabitants.
But know I understand that it's useless to tax if you are under 200M. Around 200M, the value of a colony starts growing.

The strategy guide release to staff for final processing is still 2-3 weeks off, because I have taken a short vacation to listen to music. Currently, about 40 pages are done, with heavy editing to clean up poor grammar and American English colloquialisms. I realized that with staff so busy around the holidays, they probably should not be bothered to edit my guide. Furthermore, I did not want to take the wind out of the sails for the expansion pack, now that Erik and Elliot are discussing it in public...
