Thanks for all of the suggestions! I just finished reading "Out of the Dark". The story was good as an example of mankind (loosely interpreted) getting payback on brutal invaders, in the tradition of the movie "Independence Day"...

If you want a downer, try David Gerrold's "War against the Chtorr" series. So far as I know, that is the only one where aliens treat Earth life the way SOME people talk about "terraforming" other worlds. Speaking of "Downer"s, no one has mentioned C.J. Cherryh, who wrote a good series of Alliance versus Union novels, perhaps because I asked for little known or newer authors...
