First of all, welcome to WITP-AE and the forum. About a year ago I was in the exact spot you are in now. When you first start this game, it is totally bewildering! But stick with it and you'll find that is could be the best game you ever bought. Definately not a waste of money!
Here's how I would recommend starting to learn the game (from one newbie to another):
1 - Start the game: first, you'll see the "Loading" screen as the game loads itself, then the Matrix intro (press escape to by-pass the intro), then the "War in the Pacific" intro (press escape again to by-pass). The next screen you should see is the "Main Menu" screen.
2 - On the Main Menu screen, you'll see a round selector switch. This switch deermines which side you will play (Allies of Japanese), and which side the computer will play. Select "Japanese Computer", which means you will be the Allied side.
3 - Also on the Main Menu screen, you will see on the right side a series of red buttons. Click on the one that says Scenario Selection.
4 - A new screen will appear titled "Scenario Menu". You should see a list of numbered scenarios on the left side of the screen. Click on "004 - Guadalcanal". This is a smaller scenarion centered on the Guadalcanal campaign. Next, click on the red button that says "Select Scenario".
5 - A new screen will appear that is titled "Scenario Details". Click on the red button that says "Start Scenario".
6 - After the scenario loads, you will see the game map centered on Noumea. This is where you actually play the game. As Allies, your units are green and the Japanese are red. Just look around the map. You'll see islands with bases on them, bases with troops on them, Task forces at sea with ships in them, all sorts of stuff. Just screw around with the units you see to familiarize yourself with the game elements. During a game turn, you will able to give these units orders to move about, load troops, etc.
7 - At the top of the map is a row of icons that control the game. The one all the way on the left is the "Save Game" command. This one lets save the current turn into a numbered "slot" you can save up to 200 turns this way, if memory serves me correctly, The icon all the way on the right is the "End turn" command. You press this to end the current turn. When you press this icon, the commands you entered are executed, the Japanese AI moves the Japanese units, and the turn is "resolved" with any combat that may occcur being resolved.
There George, that's the way I figured out the game. Trial and error mostly. Sadly, there is no tutorial, but the manual is of course useful, as is this forum. The people here are always willing to answer questions. Feel free to ask anything you want.
The game you just bought is a strategy game, not an arcade game. It is VERY detailed, and you will have to learn a lot of details to play the game well. I have exerted the effort and found it well worth while.

Complete Newbie - 
Steer clear from Grand Campaign before you have familiarized yourself with interface and some critically important points. Grand Campaign is long-time project and it can be incredibly frustrating first, especially if not familiar how game handles some aspects of operations and logistics.
