Thanks Cribtop, this turn isn't so good, not exactly that bad, but certainly not what we anticipated!

27 Dec 1941

Subs
Ships fleeing from Sydney?

Submarine attack near Portsea at 81,172

Japanese Ships
SS I-169

Allied Ships
xAK Admiral Halstead, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Westcoast
Sub attack near San Clemente Island at 224,81

Japanese Ships
SS I-21

Allied Ships
xAK Ewa, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Burma
We pull back from our succesful para drop, only a couple of support squads to go. There are some enemy advancing on Tougoo... Also 21 B-17 bomb the base... interesting...

The attacks on Rangoon begin... there are no longer ships in the area, I think we have broken them here already.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on Rangoon , at 54,53

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 26 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 10 minutes

H81-A3: 1 destroyed on ground

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 21

Malaya
No change, we are almost at Kuala Lumpur

DEI
Well the raid into Sorebaya was certainly interesting! We loose a DD, have 5 badly banged up and 4 BB's with light to medium damage... The bombardment was a fizzle as a result, although the BC Repulse is reported sunk, even though it wasn't in any of the engagements... They may have scuttled her after damage from last turn, figuring it would cost less points wise... although she is listed as 202 VP's.

They sent out all their combat ships, but there are still over 50 ships bottled up in Harbour... we may be able to keep them trapped there yet...

A series of prelim battles with PT's sees no damage to us, but 3 Dutch and 3 UK boats are sunk.

TF 20 encounters mine field at Soerabaja (56,104)

Allied ground losses:

Squads: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled

Their also attacks our several TF but does no real damage. We need to get a fighter base that is closer!

Philippines

Continued air sweeps whittle away the opposition, the bombing isbecoming marginally more effective. A div has arrived in Manila. IOt should fall, then they will move on Clark.

China
I had a question last turn, can a Japanese Tank Regiment take on an attrited, disrupted Chinese corps in the open...

Analaysis.
The appearance of B-17 in Burma is useful intelligence. It looks like at one stage they were going to try and make a stand there... hence all the shipping, and we think they have bought in more brigades...

It also indicates (along with other intel) that Java and Sumatra are not being reinforced.

The potential/likely loss of 5 DD's to mines is rather annoying, but so far our ship losses are very low, 1 BB, 1 CA, 3 DD. And whilst the BB's got hit by the mines they will recover, and with their current strategy, and the loss of a lot of ships, the BB's are not essential at the moment.

The Battle of Clark will be intersting... we will probably wait for another Div to come up before anything is really done... we have also considered withdrawing force to use elsewhere... which is increasingly tempting...

The next couple of turns should cement in a few things and help to guide us on what opportunities to go for.

Cheers

Rob

28 Dec 1941 Good naval action finally!

Subs
The Dutch subs are very active outside Sorebaya, we loose the CL Kitakami, and BB Hyuga takes a torp, she is Float 53 now. Could have been worse as there were several failed attacks.

Burma
No change. Our paras are all pulled out, and we continue the long cross country march.

Malaya
We are closing on Kuala Lumpor.

DEI
This game has prophesy. Last turn the BC Repulse was announced dead, even though there was no action. This turn my SCTF to the West of Sorebaya finds her and launches a perfect lonmglance attack...

Night Time Surface Combat, near Pamekasan at 58,105, Range 1,000 Yards

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
CA Maya
CA Ashigara, Shell hits 1
DD Yukikaze
DD Tokitsukaze
DD Yamakaze, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Kawakaze
DD Umikaze
DD Suzukaze
DD Asakaze
DD Matsukaze
DD Shiokaze, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Shell hits 13, Torpedo hits 5, and is sunk
DD Alden, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Evertsen, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Kortenaer, Shell hits 1
DD Piet Hein, Shell hits 11, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Van Ghent, Shell hits 1, on fire

The Dutch combat fleet is now ionly 1 or 2 damaged DD's.

Our Betties sortie from Kendari against some shipping heading out of Sorebaya...

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Mataram at 58,111

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 25 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 20

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
TK Mindanao, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
AO TAN 5, Torpedo hits 4, and is sunk
AO TAN 6, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Pope
PG Soerabaja, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Mini KB is to the south and can close on the remainders, and any other moving out from Sorebaya.

Philippines
Our air attacks are begining to become increasingly effective.

Manila is a bit stronger held than I expected... may need an application of airpower to help.

Ground combat at Manila (79,77)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 3752 troops, 40 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 376

Defending force 5167 troops, 104 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 228

Japanese ground losses:
6 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
7 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
16th Recon Regiment
9th Infantry Regiment
48th Recon Regiment
20th Infantry Regiment
16th Engineer Regiment

Defending units:
71st PA Infantry Division
1st PA Infantry Division

Australia
Mini KB port attacks Broome in case there were any ships we missed, there weren't.

She still has sorties left, but need to retire to Kendari soon.

China

We attack at Chuhsien and get 2:1 odds and reduce the forts. It should fall next turn.

We are pulling the first of the SNLF out of Pakhoi for use in the DEI.

So far we have 2 US BB's declared Sunk, the BC Repulse, 2 CA, 6 CL and 14 DD for the loss of 1 BB (4 damaged)1 CA, 1 CL and 3 DD.

We have cleared the DEI of combat ships, and have bottled about 50 ships up in Sorebaya. The Betties, subs and SCTF can probably get most of them.

KB is in an interesting position and is unseen.

They appear to be not reinforcing Sumatra, Java or the DEI.

They appear to be pulling out in Burma. The AVG has vacated Rangoon.

Our challange is to clear Malaya and the Philippines quickly. The first is likely, the second we are not confident about.

We expect to take PM and settle into our SWPAC lines without too much hassle.

Cheers

Rob

We are hitting both Singapore and Johore Bharu from the air.

DEI
Our Cripples are making their way back, baring Dutch subs we should get to safety...

Mini KB heads north...

The Nates have moved out, and Oscars are now on CAP. have stacks of AA there, but they generally flew too high.

We are a few days out from Moulmein, Mergui will fall next turn.

Malaya
Kuala Lumpur falls.

They have moved units in to our blocking force, could be interesting next turn...

DEI
We continue to thread our ships back to Kendari, haven't lost one of the DD's yet... but still another 4-5 days to go. Have ASW Tf protecting them.

Mini KB is retiring on Kendari, but part will probably turn around this turn. 1 CVL is out of sorties, but the others are only half way, so we can send one back at a time to rearm/refuel and maintain the Sorebaya blockade. We need to take some closer airfields to sweep the Dutch from the sky.

Philippines
Resting. Plan attacks every 3 days. More air moving in, plenty of supply, and Manila was captured intact so will generate some supply.

Mindanao is being taken base by base.

Australia
a SCTF heads into Townsville, there are ships in port, and several TF heading back to Darwin. Only the one Victim.

We are credited with CA Louisville, CA Australia, CA Canberra, CL Leander. There are plenty of targets out there still!

We do loose 13 Kates though...

China

Lots of troops arrived at Nanyang. We will bombard this turn to test. 2 more divs are on the way up.

A Div will cross into Loyang next turn... could be very bloody...

Home Islands
Lots of resources starting to flow. Supply is now low, but we have shipped stacks out. SWPAC has over 300k now, DEI has about 80k in the south and 80k in the north. Philippines have about 80k as well.

Lots of PB's and now AKE's coming on line.

Gathering assault shipping centrally for when Philippines or Singapore is clear.

So far so good... Dutch fleet destroyed, Australian Mauled... KB is exposed but very strong.

Cheers

Rob

More destruction to come... I'll try and post tomorrow. The Australian fleet is basically gone, and a couple of US ships as well.

Been spending time reviewing the production, will try and post some thoughts in a day or so.

Cheers

31 Dec 1941 Destruction of Australian Fleet, Attack on Melbourne.

Subs
Our damaged ships again avoid the Dutch subs... just. Only the DD's are at sea, float damage is slowly dropping.

Burma
No action.

Malaya
They are moving more forces into our blocking position. We are moving the forces out of Mersing to to country block position. It looks like they may have moved a unit up from the south as the hex side maybe showing green... we may need to move one of our units south to close it.

DEI
Clearing up dot bases, getting our damaged ships into port, only the DD's to go. 1 BB badly damaged, 2 moderately (but can still be used). 1 CL moderately and about 6 DD's in various levels of damage. Kendari roads are overflowing with ships brining in fuel and supply. It will cat a s a base for FT TF to operate from.

Philippines

Moving troops around. Only Bataan and Clark is allied. On Davao the island is about 50% cleared. Elsewhere we are going around cleaning up small bases.

Australia
We raid Darwin again causing light damage. There is still a DD and SS listed as being in port there.

KB plays in Bass strait. A number of TF around trying to make port at Portland and Qeenstown. We also hit Melbourne port to find more warships tied up alongside!

We are expecting them to counter raid into our lines of communication and have re-routed shipping accordingly. We have pulled anything mobile out of the Marshalls for the moment until we can be stronger there... but forces are underway, and with a bit of CV cover we can then move in and improve the setup.

Cheers

Rob

01 Jan 1942 - Production

01 Jan looks like a good time to review production. We are using the tracker tool, fantastic! Although I'm not sure I know how to actually use all of its capability yet...

Anyway here is the aircraft production, those in brackets indicate repairing factories. In order of building numbers:

A6M2 Zero......131(43) - I think we may be over producing in 2 months.
Ki-43-Ic Oscar.93(75)
G4M1 Betty.....49(1)
D3A1 Val.......36(12)
KI-48-Ib Lily..34 - these are now turned off, waiting on Helen to com online.
E13A1 Jake.....27
B5N2 Kate......25(7) - may still be low.
KI-21-IIa Sally23 - we would like more...
KI-46-II Dinah.22
G3M2 Nell......22 - currently turned off
H6K4 Mavis.....12 - will change to Emily
E14Y1 Glen.....9
Ki-57-I Topsy..6 - may need to increase as I use air transport a lot!

Of the oncoming aircraft Helen is the biggest builder at 22(6) followed by Tony 2(20), Tojo 1 (15)and Nick 1 (12).

Aircraft engines are:
Nakajima Ha35 ...Pool 133...230 (80) (will need more)
Aichi Ha-60......pool 000...125
Mitsubishi Ha33..Pool 051...90 (40) (about right for the moment)
Mitsubishi Ha32..Pool 000...84 (36) (need to increase more)
Mitsubishi Ha31..Pool 255...45
Nakajima Ha45....Pool 000...30
Nakajima Ha34....Pool 022...29 (11)
Kawasaki Ha60....Pool 000...23 (17)
Hitachi Amakaze..Pool 120...11 (need to build a few more... but how many?
Mitsubishi Ha43..Pool 000...10
Nakajima Ha44....Pool 000...10

The change to Helen and Emily in a few months really messes with the Ha32/Ha33 mix. Need more Ha34 as well, will wait for the current expansion to finish. Will also need more Ha35 eventually!

Industry wise we have increased armoured vehicle production to 81, but not played with the rest.

Ship wise Shinano and Musashi are halted. CV Junyo and Hiyo, CVL Shoho and Ryuho and CVE Unyo accelerated.

Cheers
Rob

01 Jan 1942 a good start to the year, will it continue?

Australia
All the action is here. We are begining to realise their are so many ships in the area that we will run out of ammo :( Tony has been carefully using the torpedoes and we are still at around 50%, but it is time to head back. A real pity.

Ships in port are very hard to sink...

We also give love to Darwin, SS Pike takes another bomb hit...

There are lots of ships fleeing the east coast of Australia at the moment... not sure why :)

But our time is up. Maybe capturing a small base and bringing in a few AKE would help to keep the love going...

Cheers

Rob

We are considering returning to the East Coast of Australia again in fairly short order. There are stacks of ships, they are damaged and can't move far or fast... If we can kill more of the xAP's we will severely limit their attack options in 1942.

Cheers

Rob

Those are probably the small APs, but they are very helpful in landing at undeveloped or very small ports as they are all under 6000 tons. KUDOS!!

I have been playing both sides and I have put PBYs at both Sydney and Hobart (combine all the BFs on Tasmania into one) to have a warning of what you just did.

I hope a Naval HQ is on their way to Kendari to help with damages along with an AR.

I like Denpasar off the southern tip of Suva to isolate the island and it cannot be reached by land units.

In Tracker, pull up the Air Production Tab, then Engines, and finally Planning. This will allow you to look ahead 12 months to see where your engine needs are. A great tool.

On Luzon, I would hit both Clark and Bataan as you need those Air Supply hits to kill supply. It may be hard to take Clark until he runs out of it.

OK, I just caught up the last 1 1/2 pages.

Thanks ny59giants, been playing with tracker and starting to get thehang of it a bit more...

So production Part 2 :)

Engines.
Ha-35 (Zero, Oscar). We are building 236 (74) in three factories of 180 (0), 28 (52) and 28 (22) and have a pool of 131. We probably made a mistake here and should have had only 2 factories producing, and the third should have been producing Ha-32 (Sally, Betty).

Ha-33 (Nell, Val, Jake, Mavis; Judy, Tony to come). We have 93 (37) and a pool of 45, although Nell is currently "off", in a single factory. This is about right at the moment.

Ha-32 (Betty, Sally; Emily, Jill, Jack, Frances to come ). We are building 87 (33) no pool. We are underdone here and need another factory urgently.

Ha-31 (Dinah II, KAIc Nick, Topsy II) . We are building 45 in a single factory and have a pool of 255. 255 will get the Dinah through to the next version that uses a different engine, and the Nick version doesn't come on line until mid 1943, we may have an engine spare. Topsy II is no benefit over Topsy I, So this is one option to change engines from.

Ha-34 (Helen, Tojo) . We are building 32 (8) in a single factory and have a pool of 26. We will continue to ramp this up and may need another factory in a couple of months.

Amakaze (Glen) . Producing 11 in a single factory, pool of 120. We have enough engines for 12 months of Glen production now. We could change this factory over to Ha-32...

Ha-5 (Topsy, MC-21 Sally) . Building 7, pool of 95. We could turn this off. Topsy II uses Ha-31.

So we have three factories that we can use to change to Ha-32...

Cheers
Rob

I wouldn't produce any engines for Glens. Its operational losses are low because the number of active planes is low. 100 Glens probably will be more than enough for the entire war.

Some days it just isn't fair being Allies at this stage of the war. They intercet KB with a sub, get a hit on Shokaku, but it doesn't go bang... next combat animation is us getting a hit on Lady Lex in the Marshalls (which we anticipated they would raid). Sux to be Allies:)

Subs
In addition to the CV attacks mentioned above.

Burma
Our force at Toungoo is now a strong battalion group. Forts are at 50% supplies minimal. We are getting towards the maximum we can maintain with our air support.

The B-17 do not come.

Off Port Blair we intercept the shipping we attacked off Rangoon last turn, either they were going to counter invade the Burma coast, or reinforce Port Blair... operative work being "were".

We take Moulmein.

Cleaning up this TF would be good, CL Hobart should be about the last large Aussie ship to sink!

Malaya
No Change another couple of turns then we will clean up Malacca, then the main force will descend...

DEI
The naval aviation doesn't cover itself in glory this turn.

The fleeing ships from Batavia and Sorebaya. Mini KB is off the Batavia end, but as the targets are small it doesn't lanuch, prefering instead to Port Attack Merak. Our Netties form Sinkawang sortie... but focus on attacking PT boats... which they fail to hit.

In the south the Nettis main effort is supporting the landing at Denpasar, which falls easily and Betties and Zero's immediatly fly in to the undamaged airfield... they will have fun next turn.

We do have some naval combat:

The AS Otus also slips by...

Next turn we land at Tarakan.

We take Cagayan.

We raid Port Moresby:

AM Lithgow

China
All quiet.

Intentions. KB is retiring to refuel rearm, and then will raid again... target depend on what intel we get on enemy CV's.

We will probably realign boundaries soon. Assuming Singapore falls quickly I'll take over resonsibility for Jave to add to Sumatra and Burma. 1 Div will go to Burma, 3 (plus whatever Tony can free up) will go to Java. Once Java is secure they will plan/prep for Ceylon or southern India.

Once Clark falls, we will siphon off force for Java and for SWPAC. Until then we will do what we can with the 5-8 SNLF sized units. Targets are clean up DEI in particular Timor, maybe an Aussie base or three and Port Moresby. Options beyound that inclued New Caledonia, Fiji and the Line Islands as smash and grab raids.

We want to threaten Australia so they pull AIF squads into the Militia units, and don't use them to reform the 8th Division.

I'm tempted to try and free up some units for the Aleutions...

Cheers

Rob

Here is Burma, a bit over half of the 21st Ind Mixed Bde is now in Tougoo.

The 33rd Div is closing on Moulmein, it will then launch across into Pegu with an Inf Regt and 3 Tk regiments.

They look to be planing to defend at Pegu, and they could have level 3-4 fiorts by now, we spent a lot of effort sinking ships so haven't been able to supress them as much as we would have liked!

Here is Malaya. The bulk of the Army is at KL ready to move forward when Malacca falls, hopefully next turn...

They will take Mersing this turn, but our troops to the south have plenty of supply (we have about 230 AV at Johore Bahru). But if Malacca doesn't fall this turn we will need to march a unit south from Malacca or they may open a back door to escape from...

Well due to a busy week I'm now about 4 days behind in reporting, so I'll try to catch up!

10 - 13 Jan 1942

Subs
They are laying little eggs all over the place... bastards! But no damage yet...

Our subs are operating off the west Coast still and over this period hit (and probably sink) several unescorted merchants. xAK Florence is one that looks to be sunk.

We also get the AMIpswitch at Suva and an xAK near Ceylon.

We suffer no ships lost but loose one sub to mines at Sorebaya.

Over the same period they loose 3 Subs, two in Port at Sorebaya (several more are there being hammered from the air).

Burma
We are now at Pegu. We are attacking next turn.

Our Block at Toungoo hasn't been molested yet (except by B-17D). We have almost 100 AV in level 1.5 forts and moderate to good supply (have 4-5 units flying in supply unmolested).

They have raided Toungoo and Raheng with B-17D, we are getting on average 1 B-17D every second turn.

We continue to supress Rangoon and Port Blair, no more ships have tried to run the gauntlet.

Malaya

We have taken Malacca, and forced them NE back towards Kuantan. We are now at Johore Bahru, and will have enough strength to take it in 2-3 days.

Singapore should fall quickly afterwards.

Sumatra
We have started to clear Palembang with mines. Swordfish from Singapore launched and hit one of our DMS in the process.

Java

We continue to strike Sorebaya from Denpasar sinking ships in port.

Borneo
After a real ****fight we have landed in strength at Tarakan, but failed on the first assault. More supplies are being shipped in.

South Eastern DEI
We have landed at Dili. Kendari is growing nicely and is the major hub in the area.

Philippines
Attacks at Clark have reduced the forts to zero and we are at about 1.5:1 in assault odd. We plan to bring in the 19th Div soon and that shoudl get us to 2. We are bleeding heavily in our attacks.

Once we clear Clark we will probably Blockage Bataan and send the bulk of forces elesewhere.

Davo is now almost fully cleared (Zamboanga is the last hold out).

SWPAC
KB is rearming nd refueling.

We are preping hard for PM.

Have landed at Tulagi.

China
We have stalled 1 hex north of Nanyang and took heavy casulties, we need to recover and bring in more force... which we are doing.

We are advancing into the wastes of Mongolia....

Overall we are pleased with where we are at.

Cheers

Rob

DEI
I forget to stop the TF at Tarakan from unloading and the CD guns get another xAK :(

Boela Falls, Babo is next.

Continue to hit Sorebaya... no longer much of a return.

Australia
We raid Darwin, not much return.

SWPAC
We have supressed PM nicely another week or so and we can probably invade safely.

China
Mostly resting.

We have increase Ha34 production from 40 to 80. This is used by Helen and Tojo.

We have sucked Formosa dry of resources, and doing well out of Haiphong as well (the port is also growing there from 5-6). The northern resource area is being worked to about 4 port pairs now. Have started Bangkok resource convoys. Starting to suck out of China, Korea convoys are working well.

We need to cease drawing fuel from the HI, Tarakan is a couple of days off falling but it needs to be exploited to serve the DEI efforts. Miri/Brunei fuel is being shipped to Kuching for the Sumatra invasion force.

We don't have any Oil centres to really exploit yet... but our tankers are ready.

The sub threat is dropping and more PB's are coming on line.

Our invasion fleets are holed up waiting for the Malaya or Philippine operations to finish.

We aren't using our big fast xAK much at the moment as we need to free up some faster escorts, so focussing on the slower xAK and xAKL's.

Cheers

Rob
