If PH was just a chick flick, why was the premier ..in Hawaii, actually at Pearl harbour..on the deck an Aircraft Carrier,
for veterans of the battle?

After the screening the news reporters asked for responses and had fairley favourable quotes.
"The bombing scenes were very realistic" {which was how it was marketed... that falling bomb into the Arizona was the trailer.Not very feminine.}
"A good movie"..and so on. Immediately after  the vox pieces the anchor said.."many veterans privately said they didn't think much of the movie, but didn't want to air negative views on camera."

It was up against another summer blockbuster in 2001.
One veteran said "I went to see Shrek straight after. That was a much better movie"

Because Hollywood consistently gets their messages confused.

If you don't think that it is a chick movie, then please tell me what you think is the plot?

I have no idea what the plot was. I know what the idea was. Combine the gritty realism of CGI battle from Saving Private Ryan with the succesful love story of Titanic and make the Oscar winning blockbuster of the decade.

Like many here when I watched it as a war movie it was awful. Really awful.
Even as an action movie its pretty lame.
If its watched as a romance set amongst PH then its a lot better. The Nurses scenes, the empty hospital beds suddenly filling with wounded, are very good.
The opening wheat field is good. The FDR scene is really good and should be in a better movie.

But I'm certain it wasn't made as a romance FIRST movie.
It was trying to be an action film that had a strong love interest. Fails on both levels.
IMD 5.5 stars. And that seems to me only slightly generous. 5/10 I'd say.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but The Battle of the Last Panzer was really a JOKE!!!

I never saw this one but I've heard it's one of the worst war movies ever made.

Seems I only agree with the majority one one thing...PH is probably the only war movie I almost walked out of...I didn't but I will never get that couple hours of my life back and I miss them.

As for Gods and Generals...I liked it, but was prepared for it and watched one evening while the wife and kids were out of town.

The one that surprises me a little bit (but is not a shock)is the general dislike of a Thin Red Line. I loved this move, I have watched 3-4 times now afer buying the DVD.

The pacific war series on HBO was a major disappointment for me...not boring...but not gripping either. I loved Band of Brothers (probably my favorite war flick TV or theater)and I probably set the bar to high for poor old HBO on this one.

You would think there would be alot of very good movies about the American Civil War, but I can think of just three that are good:  Gettysburg, Glory!, and Shenandoah (the latter isn't on the same level as the first two, however).

Cold Mountain is a pile of bat poo.  I can understand that somebody might have taste inclined to enjoy it as a cinematic production - if one's taste is inclined to movies of the sort - but its Civil War component is unarguably atrocious; without redeeming value.

I liked "Glory," but at times the dialogue got a bit too cloying -- audiences can get the racial harmony message without it being spoonfed to us! A very good movie, despite that. "Shenandoah" is another very good one, though of course it's not so much about the actual combatants. I did like "Ride with the Devil," which Anthropoid mentioned, except I was miffed at the title being so deceptive: with a title like that you don't expect more than half the movie to be cutesy scenes about one male character or another being romantically involved with Jewel. The movie was only 10% devil, by my estimate. Hell of a well done film, but it doesn't come as advertised.

In fact, I am having trouble thinking of any good ACW movies.

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is the best I can think of.

Which is not even an ACW movie. It is a spaghetti western that just happens to be set in the ACW.

1) That was my point.
2) The movie does have Gen.(?!) Sibley!

Maybe it shoulda been "Ride with my Dead Buddies Girlfriend, her Baby . . . and the Devil . . . with pistols and stuff?"

Just like Kelly's Heroes

Aww man, that movie is in my Top Ten, not just War Top Ten, but Top Ten Top Ten.

I prefer it by it's Spanish title though, LOS VIOLENTOS DE KELLY! (Close second the German title, STOSSTRUPP GOLD!)

Kelly's Heroes was the greatest war movie ever made!

Sorry for the OT response.......most boring was Thin Red Line for sure.
