It was year 2776. It has been 2 years since the war against the Gizurean Hive Mind. It was the biggest and the most bloodiest of the war in the history of mankind. 22 million lives lost to the bugs..... damn... They just kept on coming. One Medal of Honor soldier who became the poster boy for the Alliance Military, said there seemed to be no end to the Gizurean swarm, of course.. Their reproduction rate is extremely high. The war lasted bitter 3 years. That **** was so bitter, President Ian had to step down after the war. But I would say it's mostly the Alliance Council's fault. Whatever they eyeball next, they will get. Guaranteed... Hey, we won anyways.. But won at a cost. A cost that no race is ever proud or fond of.

Everybody f***ing knows this war wasn't to "rescue neighboring empires from the terrorizing hive mind insects AND to prove that humans are the supreme race that WILL be hailed heroes of the galaxy after this piece of cake is done." And that this war was just specially for the Gizurean's main home world. For the Korabbian Spice. Something that human galactic community just had to put aside the blue rose theory.

-----------------------

Human Alliance.. ha.. What a name. We are so self centered, so many other races don't appreciate our existence. First of all, they don't like the fact that we work so aggressively. And second, they don't like our "curiosity" of the galaxy. If you mix aggressiveness and human curiosity together, what do you get? That's exactly what was applied to the Alliance Council's policy. Expansion after expansion. They never get tired of exploring and taking names for themselves.

If I remember right from the history class, the earlier of mankind's government were very cautious, with no balls, shivering like a scared little kid, after the "First Contact". The "First Contact" as in, the first contact of aliens. Which we obviously learned that we were not alone. That was way back in "Middle Ages" anyways, as the council refers it.

But now look at us, we violate every possible "Galactic Laws of Manners" and do whatever the hell we want! The council this, the council that. The council says such laws don't exist, that they are just made up from the space faring merchants. I highly doubt that because the media seems to tell more truths these days.. especially in the mornings. Everyday the news is about ugly aliens complaining and whining of how we humans do things, and that we must follow the "Galactic Laws of Manners". And that we are the "amateurs of the galaxy" or "amateur species of space faring", or something like that, it's ridiculous. Not that I support the council's way either.

Journal Log Entry #2 Recording...
Man I'm going insane! I don't know where I am. I don't care, that's for sure....

Year 2776 of the same date sine 2 years after the horrible Gizurean war.. Utopia becomes under Alliance control.
The galactic community was furious. Some races considered Utopia to be sacred. And we dirtied it, with human hands and feet as the Alliance troops march down Utopia. The Mechanoids or as the galactic community calls them, "The Ancient Guardians", they are fierce. Yes.. Fierce indeed. They don't know such thing as surrender. For few years now, the Council has been trying to "talk" to the Mechanoids, all they got was same reply, "Not interested". Only thing they were interested in was defending Utopia to the death. It was even restricted to travel there. What secrets did Utopia had, it was beyond me. It was beyond all of us.

And so heeeeerreee comes the Alliance Council to the rescue! Oh man, they are such problem solvers when it comes to "Mystery". They MUST find out! They just can't RESIST! Alright so, here comes their procedure. 1. Discuss about Utopia for half an hour, next they get on to voting for what only God knows, they call the president and the president accepts. All this takes just 3 hours to process. And TA-DA! We got ourselves 4 Alliance Fleets waiting outside of Utopia's system. And the Guardians see that as a threat aaaaaannnnddd everything goes according to Council's plan. It's just retaliation AFTER ALL... As a result, we lost 3 fleets and the last fleet with only 2 heavily damaged frigates remaining.

Ancient Guardians on foot wasn't easy either. If I heard right, we lost around 500 to 600 thousand men.

Again, we all knew this war against the Mechanoids weren't for "solving the great mysteries of history", but it was for Loros Fruit. Which only the elite of the elites of the Human Alliance were chosen to get a bite of that legend of a fruit. Especially the Councilmen, of course.

I'm telling you Lieutenant! All hope is not lost! It's not too late! NOT YET! NOT YET! We can still make it! Wha... What's the status of the passengers?! Lieutenant!!!!

Captain O'Hara's Journal Log Entry #3
Oh man.. What's this world coming to? Oh yeah... WHAT WORLD? I'm just going even more insane day by day.. the crewmen.. they are sick! I think they are trying to kill me.. No.. It's just me that's paranoid... yes yes I'm sure everything will be alright if we just WORK TOGETHER! We can survive this yes.. Oh man those damn f***ing top brass had no idea what they were getting themselves into! It's done for! But we must go on.. we must keep going..

Year 2777.. It's been 5 years since I was in the service of the Alliance Space Navy as an officer. So me and 2 of my friends headed down to the lower deck of the cruiser we were serving on, SS Grand Prestige, a flagship of the "2nd Alliance Security Fleet". And into the officer's lobby we went, to celebrate our 5 year anniversary as proud officers of the Alliance Military AND for strange coincidental reunion. My rank.. Lieutenant. I was in charge of the security of the crewmen, in case anyone tried to f*** around inside our ship. My good friends, Gordon and Samuel. Gordon went for the Space Naval academy on Earth, a real hard ass. He's a captain already.. Captain of the flagship SS Grand Prestige itself, working under Admiral Santiago, head of the 2nd Alliance Security Fleet. Samuel, he's more of a grunt, a captain of the Alliance Army grunt squads back on land, he graduated from Alliance Troop Academy back on Mars.. He had "chance" to get on board Grand Prestige because the grunts are on board.. As we headed towards a system only known as SL770, with the ships of the Boskara Hive awaited us there.

Man, why do I get a feeling that all Insectoids are bad? They attacked the Alliance's military research base on SL770, built not too long ago. But here is the real reason why those bugs would suddenly attack that colony.. Alliance military found something intriguing, an ancient ruin. That was all the information they provided us in the briefing. The real news is, that the group of archaeologists paid by the Alliance government found the ruins there first and then the military research base was built. Something fishy is definitely going on around there. And why would the stupid bugs ever be interested in ancient ruins anyways? Very fishy indeed.

After we arrived to the sector, we hyperspace jumped to SL770 without any hesitation. And as soon as our ships slowed down, all hell broke loose. In our fleet, we had (Cruiser)SS Grand Prestige, 2 Destroyers, and 4 frigates. In THEIR fleet, they had 3 cruisers, 5 destroyers, and 7 frigates. All of them besieging SL770. Why the hell would the top brass send us here outnumbered? BECAUSE WE ARE ABLE DAMMIT! Our weapons, our technology, outsmart those dumb bugs!

Haha would you look at that. The sight of their pathetic insect fleet blowing up in huge ball of flame was quite glorious! We've won, and the day was ours.. It was good times. And we went to the lower deck, to the officer's lobby to celebrate our victory. But it wasn't over. Samuel prepared to land on SL770 with his troopers. I bid him farewell. Forever that is. He never came back.

He became a small time hero though, for bravery against the Boskara Hive foot soldiers and securing the archaeologists. I'm big time fascinated by "ancient things". What race lived before us and what not. One of the troubled archaeologist came on board, and I personally went up to him and asked what that ruin was about. He says it's way above my pay grade to know, and it'll be his head if he tells. We went through a lot in one day. Professor Lei was his name. He was still scared ****less from what just happened and was so exhausted that he did not care for the government paycheck he's been getting, so he just ended up telling me about the ruin. But just one word was sufficient enough for me to understand. Weapon, he said.

Doctor, what's the status on the crew?

Oh no...

Journal Log Entry #4 Day 5
King of outmaneuver, that's me. I was transferred to the Cruiser, SS Sabre 063 of the 2nd fleet. 2nd Fleet is one of the biggest and most oldest of the Alliance Space Navy. 1 Capital Ship (SS Victory), 2 cruisers, 4 destroyers, and 6 frigates. SS Victory has been retrofitted many times. And won many times as well. It's truly an awesome vessel, a veteran if you will. Admiral Donnell.. The Admiral on the SS Victory is a real decorated hero too. He fought in the Gizurean war, when those bugs infiltrated into SS Victory.. Admiral himself fought with a pistol and 3 of his officers armed with assault rifles with little ammunition, in the bridge. He was holed up in the bridge for 2 days until the help arrived. Real hero. He ordered his men that the ship must not be taken at all cost. HIS SHIP. HIS BABY he calls it. Although the entire ship was riddled with those bugs, they struggled to get to the main bridge, thanks to the Admiral. He had done an impossible odd.

Year 2777. We were on a mission. An odd one too. The council had personally ordered us to neutralize a pirate faction hideout... Really? You are really going to use a highly decorated fleet to neutralize PIRATES?! An arsenal with purpose to invade a PLANET?! Why not just use small strike fleets or something? There is something odd.

Just as usual, there's always a real news behind every work of the council. The real news is that the pirates know the location of something that interests the council very much. When we got there, the pirates were waiting for us. First thing they do is launch a torpedo on the SS Sabre 063, the ship I was on. The shield absorbed it but it shook the ship. As a result, captain fell down, hit his head on a bridge computer, got head trauma and died.

I immediately became the acting captain of SS Sabre 063.

The pirates knew they were going to lose. So they concentrated fire on the most vulnerable ship. SS Sabre 063. A frigate from our fleet tried to help but it was no use. While other ships from our fleet was too busy taking care of the pirate's hideout. Then the Admiral Donnell called in to my ship saying "The pirates are trying to destroy the data we need, we must concentrate on the pirate hideout. Please, I will send you 3 frigates and I want you to outmaneuver them! Buy some time for us.." Oh it's Admiral Donnell. Hell yeah I'm going to follow that order.

I turned the ship around as best as I can. Trying to lose the pirate ships blasting us. Those pirate ships got so fed up, they just fled after knowing the rest of the 2nd fleet is not even attacking them. They fled so they could save themselves. After that, Admiral Donnell personally gave me the nick name, King of Outmaneuver.

Apparently it got to the ear of the top brass back on Earth. They told me I will be transferred to this hell hole, colony ship.. New Hope. They say my maneuvering skill would be handy for vulnerable ships. But I have been told that I have one last mission before I will be transferred to New Hope. This colony ship wasn't even built back then! But they were planning it, and they named it too even. Told me I will be transferred to this new colony ship.

Experimental ship. That caught my ears.

I know you are not alive anymore. I always loved you. I wish you were here, in this ship. So we could at least say good bye to each other for the last time.... If I could see you just one more time. Daddy always loved you....

Journal Log Entry #5 Day 6
I can't... I can't believe this. I keep asking myself... What's this world coming to? This is unbelievable. Now I know how those poor people felt when this happened... I just got word that Mars had been hit..... This is unbelievable...

Year 2777. It was Christmas Eve. And I went back to Mars, back to my family. With a packet in my hand.. a manila folder with a stamp on it that says "Classified". Top brass orders. One last mission BEFORE I get transferred to the colony ship they say. One last mission... Sounded.. not so promising. There will be hundred other officers like me going on this "One Last Mission Before.." Similar but not same missions. Not the same destination anyways. It seemed the council knew where to send all of us to.

They told me to enjoy the time with my family while it lasted. Before that mission that is. Something about this assignment disturbed me, haunted me in my sleep.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Year 2778. Time to get to the Mars space port. I bid farewell to my family and my daughter. I told them I will return home safe. It was a slight hint for them to know that I am about to go on a suicide mission.

Me and the hundred other officers with similar assignments were immediately promoted to captain. If they were captains already, they stayed captains. This meant one thing. I am going to pilot a star ship. But I already read my assignment included in the manila folder. I am going to pilot a military grade exploration ship "Guidance", armed with 1, not 2, titan beam turret.

My destination? Sector J9. Far reach, outer rim of the galaxy. An empty space with no stars but full of gas clouds. What will I find there? An Ancient space station. I was quite intrigued. I was curious of such things myself.

It took me a week to get there really... With no escort. Only me and 6 crewmen. 2 of them, expert historians. 1 of them, some professor majored in ancient scriptures and translations. And my favorite, the rest 3 of them were veteran military personnel. Those 3 were the ones that calmed my mind that I am safe with them.

We got into our suits and went on board. I saw a lot of strange alien things in the ancient space station. It was in lonely space, all alone. Lost and forgotten. The translator guy followed the directions on the wall, and led us to the main control room of the station. There we found the main computer that was still on surprisingly. VERY surprising...

The translator took the data back to our ship, and as he worked on it for hours, he finally finished translating the whole data from the main computer. He revealed, that it's just some news report in their days. He read them, and the historians read them. Even the 3 men read them. The 2 historians... Their eyes popped open.

Shaktur Axis.

They apparently thought the Shakturis were... just myth and legend. They suddenly got into a big mixed conversation. Some arguments, some speculations. They yelled at each other with faces of horror like they just seen ghost. They quickly speculated that the Shakturis were indeed real and they were the cause of the death of the ancient races. One of the historian, was Kiadian. Very intelligent, those people.

Then they just remembered something.. The very first time the Ancient Guardians contacted us, was just some warning the Alliance Council seemed to have ignored. A warning about something to do with "Coming back" and "Revenge". A revenge of the ancient race. That's right.... Yes, they were referring to the Shakturis. I just realized that myself.

Everyone in the ship was shocked. What the council wanted us to find... I think they know much more. Perhaps they were preparing, and the Ancient Guardians' warning wasn't ignored.

What was that? Did we hit something? Or did we get hit? ARE THEY HERE?! STATUS REPORT NOW!

Journal Log Entry #6 Day 7
We came back to Earth. All exploration ships came back. No one dead. As hundreds of the crews departed their exploration ships at the port, their face expression was same as mine, same as everyone else. They immediately shared their stories with each other. One of the exploration ship that arrived last had 3 engineers, you can tell they were on the ship retrieval mission. An ancient ship that is.

After this damn mission, we all got 2 year break. Really? 2 years? They paid us for 2 years too. Best time of my life that is. I was so eager to go back to Mars, back to my family.

In those 2 years, Alliance Government was really busy with something. I can tell..

Year 2780. After my anniversary trip to neutron star SU830 resort base, I was immediately called back to duty. Was I the luckiest of those hundred officers or what? Because the council personally invited me and my former "Guidance" crews to the capitol on Earth.

My heart was pumping. To see the councilors in person.. wow. Ever since our government changed from Democracy to "The way of the Ancients", things got better for our nation. Sure there were conflict to change the government but all it happened was there were soldiers from the Democracy standing outside the capitol for 3 days and backed out. No firefights. Whatever happened inside the capitol. It was the most peaceful regime change ever in the history of mankind. Everyone agreed to it so we were good.

I saw old and young people in the councilor's seats. They were sitting at a half rounded table. The 16 councilors faced me from higher floor. I felt like I was being judged by those judges. They revealed why they summoned me here, for one reason. What we found at the space station. Yeah I figured that, but didn't others find something similar too? No.. Not all they said.

The data we recovered, there was a story of the Shakturis destroying an entire planet.

The council gave me a blank check, and ordered me to go fetch them a death star.

Journal Log Entry #7 Day 8

I couldn't believe my eyes.. First place they took me to was uncharted. I thought there must be something wrong with the pilot, but I was the wrong one. As soon as we arrived to this... Unnamed system, I saw massive space station and a even more massive circular station next to it. The "Devastator Moon", the council called it. As they explained it to me at the council chamber back on Earth.

Wait. The Human Alliance knew about it all along! It would've taken them years to build this thing! Maybe it was already built? No, not the way they explained it to me. Yes.. They used those 2 years perhaps? Maybe. I really don't know

The chosen 100 officers from the exploration mission was already there. The DM (Devastator Moon) was almost finished, I asked the head engineer and he told me it will be finished tomorrow, and that I should spend the night at the DM. So I did, and it was like a hotel room. Okay so... How was I supposed to bring this giant thing back home? I'm not. In few hours, SS Victory capital ship will arrive, containing ambassadors of all the galactic communities, and their leaders to witness the power..... of Alliance's new weapon. Devastator Moon.

We were all in awe at the sight.

How exactly are we going to demonstrate it.... One volcanic planet in this uncharted system, had to be the victim.

Human Alliance, biggest empire in this galaxy. Everyone relies on Human Alliance to trade, for goods and strategic resources. MASSIVE trade that is. Our best friend Kiadians, also the very first race we encountered, depend on Human Alliance for military protection. We basically run the whole galaxy. Insectoids, they are too dumb to not make us mad, and put trade sanctions against them. Which will starve out half of their undeveloped colonies.

The galactic community was already trembling before the might of Human Alliance... But with this new weapon.. They are going to piss their pants.

Year 2780. They have arrived. SS Victory halted 250 miles off the DM. Even that far, they could clearly see the giant thing. First, they were introduced with the story of the Shakturis, the data we recovered, we told them. They were totally shocked, now they are witnessing the very weapon the legendary race had. And there were mixed faces between the aliens, some pissed, some scared. There were 2 types of pissed ones. First, they don't like us having that giant station, it makes them jealous. Second, they are mad because this is so "injustice", because we are holding a evil weapon that could destroy all life, a weapon of evil race.

Alliance didn't care. They told everyone at the SS Victory that we will just be holding this station, in case it goes into the wrong hands, like the insectoids. Right.. they thought. With our expansion agenda, it is DEFINITELY in the wrong hands already. But we humans aren't that evil. We won't massacre billions of people in 1 day. That would be a total genocide and nobody would appreciate us.

It took 2 days for our super computer to complete reading the DM's operational manual. So DM started powering up.
And...

Oh man.. never seen a planet blow up in my entire life. And everyone on SS Victory, dropped on their knees, as the councilors smiled.

Oh God.. please help us...

Journal Log Entry #8 Day 9
Thi...Thiss... This will be my last transmission log. If anybody listening to my journal entries, please.. They are the recorded history of us from my point of view. They may not be the complete recorded history but, listen to it. And remember us. Remember us as the people that lived. We are...were the people that lived.

----
Year 2781. Entire defense of the Human Alliance has fallen. We... have lost.

Year 2780, almost end of the year... There were unnoticed programming within the Devastator Moon. The computers that weren't replaced, rerouted every systems on board. This thing moved by itself. Or so I heard.. I was already transferred to this colony ship, New Hope. It was docked at Earth.

With a new colonization technology, still experimental stage, it was ready to carry 100 Million passengers on board. It's a giant ship. I really don't know what's so good about New Hope though, and why I was even transferred here.
-------
Day 1 of the Apocalypse.

I was talking, drinking coffee with my buddy Gordon, now Admiral of the 5th Alliance Fleet. We were at the Earth space station.. and and.. this is where it all started... the emergency broadcast, the news, the announcement speaker at the station..... "Good people of the Human Alliance, we bring a grave news today... Just now.. The planet "Newfound", the Human Alliance colony.. has been utterly destroyed by an unidentified object. over 17 billion colonists were on that planet. This is perhaps the biggest tragedy in the history of mankind."

Me and Gordon... we lost our words. I knew what that unidentified object was. Still had to keep my mouth shut though.

Day 2 of the Apocalypse.

8th to 12th Fleet went to stop Devastator Moon. There were still a lot of military personnel trapped inside. They sent messages to the council saying "We swear! It's not us!"

Me and Gordon watched live feed from the 8th Fleet on screen at my house. There were... more than 20 ships accompanying the DM. They... THEY looked just like the ancient ship that was retrieved from the last time... Oh no. Could they be?

Day 3 of the Apocalypse.

The reports of attacks and mysterious ships rising from the ground were coming in from almost every part of Galaxy. Council was in deep ****. They held a emergency meeting with other races. Didn't help. It will be Earth soon too, they said.

I was at my house with my family, praying... 8th to 12th Fleet was reported anhilated. All Alliance defenses became crippled. If we would gather our entire arsenal, it wouldn't be more than 50 ships by now. That was worth a try though. Council sent every remaining ships available, even the exploration ships with blasters on them.

Alliance soldiers.. they were right outside my house. Me. They wanted me. BUT WHAT ABOUT MY FAMILY?! I yelled at them as they grabbed me and dragged me into the armored car. "We have no time, I'm sorry", one of the soldier said to me. No! I could have taken them! DAMN!

I was immediately transported to Earth Space station, to New Hope. IT'S THAT DAMNED SHIP! MY FAMILY IS STILL BACK ON MARS DAMMIT!

The entire Alliance government and couple million people were on board of New Hope....
---------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been 8 years.. It was 8 years ago.. The year is 2788. The entire world we knew, is now gone. The very last of the Alliance resistance reported gone 4 years ago. And I don't know if anyone else is out there, but this colony ship, New Hope.. seems to rather be the, Last Hope. Ha..

We brought plenty of Loros fruit to feed them to the population on board. Even myself. At least one of my wish fulfilled before dying.. Everywhere we went, we were hunted. King of Outmaneuver, that's still me.

My friend Gordon died fighting the Shakturi fleet. Damn I miss him.

My family died in the blast when Mars blew up. Heard Earth didn't blow up though, the Shakturis rather colonized it. Earth, the heart of the Alliance and our race. The strongest of any colonies. The soldiers fought well defending Earth till last breath. 70 million soldiers were waiting for the Shakturis. After the last remaining fleet was destroyed right outside of Earth's orbit. Last thing that fleet reported was "There is no sign of the giant station. We leave the last hope to you now Earth Ground Command. Good luck.. over and out."

We lived and died proudly. Remember us and what has happened to us. If anybody is out there, we have good hopes that we will live on. Good bye.

This was Captain O'Hara of New Hope, and this will be my last transmission.

Grreat story! Sad ending... but realistic given relative growth rates. When my DD (destroyer class ships) finally get torpedo weapons, I name the class "DD t." It wasn't until reading your story that i realized how funny the ship class is. back 30 years ago, or so, DDt was the number one insect killing spray used in USA (and elsewhere, I am sure). Thats what we need galactic DDT to get the bugs. Good job... looking forward to your next ...

Very enjoyable read indeed. Darn, I have love/hate relationship with sad endings. You can't always win in the big, unknown universe full of secrets that are best left uncovered.

EDIT: Hah! Noticed a small spoiler there about world devastator. No way I'm going to let that abomination to stain the known universe anymore. I always had bad feeling about that thing!

Hmm. Spoiler? As in how the Shakturis arrived? How the Devastator BROUGHT the shakturis? That is not the real way of how they arrive. How they really arrive is -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.

So you need not worry :)

Edit: If you meant something else, then...

And thanks everyone for reading!
