I have installed the game in my desktop under Winfows XP and works perfectly and in my laptop under Vista (I think I am allowed to do that). In my laptop the original version functioned without issues, v1.01 crashed about once per hour, and v1.02 crashes everytyme I chose any option in the screen after the videos (Multiplayer, Load a Saved Game, etc,...).

I do not know why, each time I double click in the launch icon (which by the way has a four-colored shield), Vista asks me for confirmation to launch autorun.exe. It seems it thinks it is potentially dangerous.

Before trying anything else, can anyone provide any quick clue about how to

1) alter the Vista security options for this program, if necessary
2) make an updating of drivers

If I try to launch the game using the "QUICK START" item (not the desk icon) I get a fatal error 801, something about serial numbers.

First of all you should update your drivers!

This you can do if you connect your PC to Internet and then go to "Computer" -> Properties "Windows Update".

You can also try runing WitE as Administrator...

Hi,

In Vista if u open the start menu and in search function that opens up at the buttom just above the menu button and types dxdiag there. It should go there directly by it self.
When its open there is an option among the 5 at the buttom of the starting page of dixdiag too dump all the dxdiag info to a txt file. Then u can then copy it too here.

Hope it helps else ill give the slightly more complicated route.

Rasmus

You may start with updating audio driver, which is quite old (2007)

Although Acer page doesn't provide any newer Intel video driver, there is for sure newer versions available. You may try to search some on intel site - http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/chpsts/965m

Unfortunately I can't call this driver problem free. There was some similar reports with various crashes or other anomalies with igdumd32.dll involved.

Did you try to run it as administator? Disable UAC?

Run as administrator
UAC disabled (no more 4 colored shields), but it still crashes...

This is a screnshot before crash. Any option (including CREDITS, including AXIS:Human, etc...) makes the game to crash
The previous movies are OK

If this gives you a clue, I downgraded the game to version 1.01 and now it seemingly works OK...maybe I should try the last beta?

There was couple of CTD fixes in latest Beta. But they all were in-game related. But still it is worth installing.

Can you try to delete (rename) your wirgame.dat and wirpred.dat. Just in case they got corrupted.

Can you also try to rename "sound" folder to see if it makes any difference.

Waw!! This seems to be the critical difference! I renamed the "sound" folder and the game works apparently fine (although without sounds, music, etc...) Something happens with that folder in my system in version 1.02 but not in 1.01...

...and interestingly the click01 (my logical guess) sound crashes my WindowsMediaplayer! The other sounds are OK...weird? There was a change in the mouse click sound from one version to the other??

and if the Sound folder keeps its name, and Click01 is renamed, the game just runs fine!!!

EDIT: I think Click02 has a problem too, and other sounds perhaps...

Well, really weird...

Ok, I understand.

But, curiously, the fact is that the click01 file crashes my v 1.02, but not my v1.01. As it crashes my WindowsMediaPlayer, I think that in the previous version there was some subroutine to avoid game crashes in that setting. Perhaps that security mechanism was deleted to improve performance??

There was no changes to the sound handling. There was some changes on how many many sounds are played during the battle. If media player is crashing it means the problem is with sound system. Do you have any kind of sound filters(codecs) installed?

Well, I don't really know if I have codecs installed, I'll have to do some research to find out...And yes, I also believe that there is a problem with my sound system. It seems as if my system cannot reproduce some sounds, as the click01 sound. If I rename that file as clAck01, I can pass the initial screen (although obviously the sound file still crashes the Media Player) both in v1.01 and v1.02. If the file remains as click01, I can only pass that screen in v1.01, not in v1.02. I was offering one hypothesis to try to explain those reproducible (in my system) observations.

I was thinking of replacing the "problematic" sound files (problematic because for some reason my system cannot reproduce them, I have found 5 of them) with some other appropriate files and see what happens...

If that does not work, and as apparently the game works more or less fine without the SOUND folder ( although today I have not had the chance to play more than some minutes) I think I can live with that (mute) situation.

i have had problems in other programs with MS media player. Try VLC media player. Also do a search for "Media Player" and see what you get. Also close the UAC no matter what else you do and always run with ADmin. I have win 7 but the issue could be related.
I also wonder what you use on your PC that is different as I think you said the game ran fine on the PC. Lastly I have had many friends who have tried to run various games on there laptops and failed for one reason or another. Good luck in finding a solution.

Thank you!!

As I matter of fact, I changed the name of five sound files inside the SOUND folder, and the game does not crash anymore. As I had been told that there has been no changes in the way sound is handled from v1.01 to v1.02, I have to assume that the improved stability of v1.02 after doing the renaming is due to the fact that there is some degree of paranormal activity inside my laptop...

I've had similar problems with my game after upgrading to 1.02. After reading this post I converted all sounds in the sound folder to wav 44100Hz 16bits stereo. Yes the sounds are wav to begin with but different types of wav. I used "Switch Sound File Converter" downloaded from download.com. After this the game works fine for me.

Unfortunately no. All uses the Microsoft PCM codec in my computer but there are several other files that uses the same. I haven't had any problems playing these in my media player or any other sound program for that matter. My game didn't crash before I tried to move a unit or attack with it.

The only thing that changed in my system was the 1.02 patch, nothing else so I don't see how it's a problem with codecs or system. I hope matrix recodes all soundfiles to the next patch and this problem will probably vanish.

Maybe there was a "problem" in your PC with one of the "click" audio files.

I realize that this is a very minor issue and will be very low in priority of the list of fixes. If it helps, I have made this experiment. If I use the AirRecon Sound File provided with the game, it crashes specifically in v1.02 (not in previous versions) but only when I attempt to make air recon. I can reproduce that file with RealPlayer but not with WindowsMediaPlayer...

The advice from Mill65 seems good (recoding your files to normal stereo). Just a thought - perhaps the problem is with the settings of your soundcard itself?

Have you tried to switch off 5.1 and any audio enhancements etc. so that basically all sounds are forced to play in normal stereo ?
