Does anybody bomb airbases beyond turn 1?

Playing as axis, normal GC, (v. 1.03b6) I can't get them to result in much, if any damage beyond turn 1. Sending hundreds of bombers and hundreds of fighters near the beginning of my turns almost always results in more planes lost by me despite going against bases loaded with obsolete planes and defended by a very small amount of CAP (I'm only on turn 48, a majority of this is against the early war models). Yes, hovering over the bases afterwards shows a mild decrease in ready airplanes (an average 1 per 100 total airplanes on base!).

Maybe I'm just used to WIR but I feel that attacks of 600+ planes in the first year of fighting should yield more significant losses.

Anything I should be doing differently?

very rarely, only if it is jammed packed with aircraft close to 100% readiness; and of course if one of your ground units is going to displace it.....

Yes, bomb away and then bomb some more. You need to and if you do it right it will pay rich dividends. Just DON'T USE TACTICAL BOMBERS, after T1, only level bombers, so you will have to select the units in the raids, not leave it up to the computer. Tactical bombers I think are more susceptible to light AA so leave them for ground support and interdiction.

Not using tactical bombers is the main thing, although Rumanian ones seem OK for some reason. Recce well in advance and see what's shooting at you before you raid. Watch for AA losses, smart opponents will attach AA in quantity when they have the chance. Don't over escort bombers. If no, or few interceptors are around, you'll lose planes just by flying them. Try not to fly over enemy HQs, they can contain a lot of AA. Watch the battle and see what's shooting you before you comit to a follow up raid.
