Again some tested information related to an Attack + Paradrop

1.) Paradrop clearly works
2.) You cannot bring down more than one fort with a deliberate attack just with raw AV. Multiple Combat engineering units may still help. Did not test it.

Attacker Losses:

ShockDrop >= Shock >>>> DeliberateDrop >= Deliberate

Defender Losses:

ShockDrop = Shock = DeliberdateDrop = Deliberate

Adjusted Attacker AV:

DeliberateDrop > ShockDrop >>>> Shock >= Deliberate

Brougth down Forts:

ShockDrop > Shock >>>> DeliberateDrop (just 1) = Deliberate (just 1)

= identical/comparable
>= almost identical but a little more of whatever
> stronger/better/higher
>>>> way stronger/better/higher

Test was done with 5200 allied AV against 1900 Japanese AV. Large advantage Artillery for allies.

That's very interesting beppi! So the best adjusted AV is deliberatedrop...albeit this doesn't bring down many forts...

Thanks a lot for testing it!

For large stacks clearly yes. That is because with a deliberate+drop only your paras get killed and the remaining troops fight only the normal combat phase. With a shock drop the paras get not mauled that bad but you suffer a lot of disabled squads during the free firing pass of the defender for the rest of your units prior to the shock and the drop modifier.

But the difference is not that big between deliberatedrop and shockdrop, but that massivly depends on the overall combat strength of both sides.

Same goes during the test for shock and deliberate without a drop. Usually shock is much stronger, but with larger attacker/defender stacks you suffer a way more disabled squads during the free firing pass so the adjusted AV prior to the final +shock bonus are much smaller than just with a deliberate attack.

Note: I only can do assumptions basing on the information from some tests for bigger stacks. As noone except the developers knows the engine exactly I can just assume something.

So probably our choice of deliberate plus drop is the best optopn given the present conditions....

Now we just need to know if we get the av bonus or not....think we just have to wait and see....

Too bad guys...the operation failed...

Rader in 2 days managed to bring to more than 9000 his Assault values...don't ask me how but his units move too fast to let me exploit any kind of surprise landing... we god a bloody nose...pity...the mission has been a fiasco...halted everywhere...and now we have to decide what to do with all those men stuck on the beaches...

I really don't understand how all those troops could be moved from Hachinoe to Aikita in 2 days... and i clearly misread the rules about movements between contested hexes...the overall plan was based on those (false) assumptions...

The only good news of the day is that we have another couple of great air battles...this time LRCAP vs LRCAP...and, as far as i can tell from the combat report, we won the day...

...but it doesn't matter much now...

Riskier than a three beachhead invasion of Honshu into the teeth of the enemy's defenses?

GJ, I salute your cajones, Sir. A bold effort. I wonder whether any invasion of Honshu can succeed. Hmmm.

Looking forward to whatever's next.

...well..when you start to dance it's better to dance till the very end!

However the problem remains...how could Rader possibly move all those non-motorized troops from Hachinoe (contested) to Akita (contested) in 2 days (3000 AVs arrived the very first day and the next 2000 the second day)...

That's what really screwed me imho...but it's my fault...i should have tested it...i should have asked...while i'm a dumbass and always want to do my own way...well done GJ

Should i dunkirk and prepare another big operation for 1945? Or should i simply sit in Hokkaido and strat bomb?

This one was close imho...my main mistake probably was the will to divide my armada in 3 different waves (in order to limit the time of exposure to his air army).... at Hachinoe, probably, if i had landed say 12k AVs i could have had a chance probably...but maybe not...Rader's ability to move faster than me could have had halted even 12k AVs...and even if you rush with your attacks (as we've just seen), there's no way to avoid his reinforcements

My Cojones reply taking the hat off

Actually, dont panic.

1.) The deliberate attack wasnt as bad as it could have been, you killed much more troops than expected.
2.) What the hell happened

Attacking force 169013 troops, 3511 guns, 3985 vehicles, Assault Value = 6550
Defending force 220400 troops, 2417 guns, 2284 vehicles, Assault Value = 7402
Allied adjusted assault: 2116
Japanese adjusted defense: 4550

You only get 2116 adjusted AV with 6500 late war allied AV ?
You sure that all your troops joined the deliberate attack and you arty did a bombardement ?3

It is very strange and uncommon for late war allied troops to get such bad adjusted AV, especially if you boost your forces with a paradrop, if your troops are on 100 prep and with the neccesary HQs.
japanese AV were pretty low too, but i assume most japanese troops are not prepped so nothing strange here.

3.) Nothing is lost, nothing is gained but:

Squads: 7 destroyed, 171 disabled
Non Combat: 11 destroyed, 226 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 14 disabled
Guns lost 37 (4 destroyed, 33 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)

You disabled a solid 400 sqads in one attack, 170 combat ones. You know what that means ?

Now a phase of rest and recovery follows, continue to hit your targets each day with 2E/4E forces. Trust me if you disable a 1500 AV each 10 days it is more than deadly.
Join in with your BB Tfs whenever possible. No you moved in, now you cannot just "leave", especially if there is no real danger.

The only position you should conside to reinforce is you blocking force. It is quite weak so if anyhow possible ship a 2000 or so more in. That is your weak point. Your troops sitting there, you do no lose anything.

You are only really need a base to upgrade devices. Rest and recovery works in the open and your troops draw replacements. It is just a little bit slower than in a base. Just dont panic

I'm all of them were set to attack and all the artillery to bombard...probably bad dice and rolls?

I'm not panicking Beppi...i'm just depressed by the pace of his reinforcements...he has surprised me again...but that's the wonderfull aspect of this game! you can never be sure of anything!

Deadly ok...but he has so many everywhere...he can send in more reinforcements from all over Japan...i know i can sit there till the war ends...but which is the gain in this kind of scenario? i mean, can i really hope to break those defences? Normandy was a joke in comparison

Damn GJ - I don't see how he could have moved that many troops in so few days days and have them ready to go in combat mode. They must have been there all along. As a JFB, IMO it's unlikely the Japanese would have had any useful SigInt to give away your intensions, so my best quess in trying to figure out where you plan went on wrong is the your recon wasn't able to give you a reliable read on what was actually there. However, if Rader simply deduced your plans from the overall situation and prepared accordingy, you must admit, hat's off to him for the move.

Regards, Paul

Riskier than a three beachhead invasion of Honshu into the teeth of the enemy's defenses?

...well..when you start to dance it's better to dance till the very end!

Possible some strat reseves. It is possible to strat move into an hex with enemy units. So if he had units in strat mode at Ominato he could have moved them in 1-2 ingame days. I did not think about that and actually there would have been a way to delay that at least 1-2 more ingame days. Sorry for that.

Do not dunkirk, losses will be massive. You cannt reembark your troops as fast as you can drop them. It will take multiple turns, and the main problem right now Raeder cannot even think about attacking your two big stacks. After a few days of loading you might have 2k or so of troops left. The he will kill the stacks off.

You will sit there for some more time. Do not strat bomb, as i already wrote in my last post. You are disabling a solid 170 combat squads each day with 2E/4E attacks. Continue to do that while you rest and recover your troops.

Split your combat units to increase the recovery rate.

How the reinforcements arrived:
Day 1:
Ground combat at Akita (117,55)
Japanese adjusted defense: 4550
Defender: forts(+), op mode(-), experience(-)

They were staged close to the battlefield in strategic movement mode. Then given a new destination Akita - and then moved the entire distance in one day.
He was most likely banking on shear number of units in the hex - so that the arriving units would not be significantly harmed the turn of arrival.
Your attack on day one may have changed their op mode instantaneously to combat mode from strategic mode.

He will of course be able to continue to do this until you isolate the battlefield or be able to interdict his movement.
Consider minor attacks on ground units in nearby bases.

Have you held unit cadres back in the rear to rebuild nearly destroyed units?

No, they came from Hachinoe...from 200 units (last turn) now only 75 are spotted at Hachinoe...they must have been in strat mode at Hachinoe......i've been outplayed. This time Rader got me

but i'm very concerned about all those losses in the air...those numbes are scary!!!...it will take me forever to get rid of those losses...both in terms of airframes and in terms of pilots....

Ok...think i'll sleep on it...and will do the turn tomorrow...too tired now to take any decision...

From counting the AC losses it did seem like 67% in losses.

You can sit there for as long as you need? In that case, keep bombing. As long as you keep him from rebuilding his forts your bombardment of his troops, especially in these clear hexes, will continue to improve on the situation.
Japan gets a ton of reinforcements soon, it is true, but you get new troops as well with even more firepower.
And there's always bombing his supplies/armaments/AC factories.

Rather than withdrawing and going back to pure bombing it would be better to mix the approaches, whether you go for his aircraft, troops or supplies/armaments.
I bet Rader would be surprised if you suddenly went for his AC factories right now...

No really need to do it any more. You can buy destroyed units back with PP. It will cost something but not that much. And allies do not have the squads to rebuild more than 6-7 divisions.

Rader could have had troops away from the front in Strategic mode ready to roll. They make the front in one day after being ordered in from afar in Honshu. They automatically convert to "Combat" mode upon arrival, but take a couple days to fully convert.

Getting combat troops into theatre is the easy part. Breaking contact and extricating from combat is quite another.

And it will take a long time to become available with PP...

While that may be possible if GreyJoy wants the game to continue into 1946, by all accounts this is not to be so. Thus, GreyJoy will party with what he brung-reconstitution of cadres doesn't sound like a viable option.

Maybe Honshu will actually capsize as 2 million soldiers run back and forth between Hachinoe and Akita? The Emperor will be seriously angry.

If you have supply you seem to have artillery superiority at both hexes. That, combined with air to ground attack might whittle him down. You could also bluff a landing further up the coast to try to get him to commit reserves.

The problem you will have with a protracted campaign will be keeping adequate CAP over both hexes. ...and supply

So hit him in Hachinoe!!!

I would be interested in an all out shock at Akita, you got 1-2 with a normal attack, killed lots of squads, drawn in reinforcements that are in the wrong mode.

Cant see much chance of success if you just sit there.

For the ACW buffs, looks like Grant is moving south, this was Cold Harbor, Battle of the Crater is next, how many months to Appomatox?

Thanks CB. I didn't realize that strat moved forces would have meanful impact until they were fully converted. That does make a big difference!

I think he suffered from a negative modifier.
When you see a unit in "Combat" but with 2-3 days to unpack there must still be an effect (or else why show it?)

It might mean the window is small and in 2 days they are ready.

Heya GreyJoy,

Just listening to a little music tonight from The Glitch Mob and thought of you. "Drive it like you stole it" comes to mind. No time now for pacifism, mate. Go big or go home.

On the positive side rader has so many troops there that you can clean out the SRA and Cen PAC with a couple of MLs and a girl scout troop

I wonder whether any invasion of Honshu can succeed. Hmmm.

Well yes, but you have to do it old school. Cut off his oil, wreck his economy and cut off his ability to reinforce the home islands. This was a bold move by GJ but Rader is not blocked from moving troops from all other theaters to the homeland. And with the exception of aircraft factories his industry is not hurt.

GJ was doing this attack for the entertainment of all of us and for the fun of it. But in reality another year of pounding Japan would have been the proper strategy. The Allies knew this. If he can't advance off the beaches then there will be a nasty evacuation with some serious casualties taken. However, he did smack down the Japanese surface fleet. And, has really hurt Rader's air force. Now he will have to sort out and rebuild his infantry and put together a more deliberate plan. As long as GJ hold Hokkaido the outcome in not in doubt.

There is still plenty of time.
