It's probably fair enough at 20k feet in terms of historical results, night bombing is an order of magnitude too effective atm - in fact strategic bombing in general is really.

I think firebombing relies less on accuracy and more on bombload too, though I've never tried it at night. If so though maybe its hard to miss a city, even at night.

AFAIK no...you need to reduce the AV of Manchukuko garrison below 8000...which isn't exactly an easy task...

However i'll do some tests with the downfall scenario using 200 B-29s at 20k feet on city night bombing and see how it goes....

And actually, Japs can do do this without conquering India and China. The real limitation for Japs to expand its HI is Oil/Fuel. The oil/fuel on the map is only enough for Japs homeland HI. My opponent said that conquering India don't help much his HI anyway because of the fuel problem. He might get some extra supply from the resources center but that's it. In scen2 Japs never worry about supplies but only fuel.

So, no matter it's a bug or whatever, 14 months ahead of historical date is not some thing reasonable. No matter how much resources Japs have put on to research.

I would like to propose a cap of how many months one type of plane can be accelerated for R&D in the game.

Hits on manpower start fires, which tend to then go on and burn out other industries.

I would personally say 10kft is more sensible as a restriction for B-29B (usual operating altitudes seem to have varied between 5k-15k); whatever the game does or doesn't do to airfields at night, the area bombing was as accurate as it needed to be (ie within a mile or so of the aiming point - cities, remember) and extremely effective - the first raid burnt out a quarter of Tokyo with 200 or so aircraft. Lancaster and Lincoln, if you make it that far, probably similar. For the other radar bombers I'd say 15k or even 20 if pushed - the B-29 force will get gadget priority.

I think the problem I have with night bombing is that when Japs try to a night fighter defense, they were shot down by 4E in a number of pretty unreasonable. I had experience of a few dozen 4E doing night bombing and they shot down a whole Sentai of Tojo in one night. I know the Tojo is not designed for night fighting but the number is still weird to me. So I agreed with my Jap opponent we suspend all night bombing until its tuned or fixed.

I hope your future experience will provide a chance for us to reopen the night bombing. Just go ahead and bomb the **** of Japs

In fact, Rader's concerns about the effectiveness of night bombing (especially over AFs) are probably correct.... I've seen in Nemo's AAR that his betties were able to keep closed an allied AF at night flying at 100ft....

I'd allow for reasonable in-game effects of nighttime bombing. Whether that's bombing manpower, airfields, 1 group, 6,000 feet, 10,000 feet, 20,000 feet whatever is an almost irrelevant variable. If night time bombing is overpowered (and I believe, like many, that it is), try to find a workaround that approximates its realtime effectiveness-or lack thereof. Achieve this agreement with partner consensus and move forth.

You should come to some reasonable accommodation on night bombing, as night firebombing is what finally made the B-29 the terror weapon it was designed to be.

There is a reason the US targeted Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the A-bombs. The bigger cites (Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka) had already been firebombed into the stone ages to the point that even an atomic weapon would've been just bouncing rubble (well, bouncing ashes).

On another topic, if that's your GF I'd resign the game to rader. Focusing on her is a strategic victory for you in the long run.

AFAIK no...you need to reduce the AV of Manchukuko garrison below 8000...which isn't exactly an easy task...

This was mentioned by moi early in this campaign before "Really Hairy" .. Invade Korea with the idea of cutting off, bombing, and eliminating AV in Manchukyko with the explicit purpose of Soviet Activation. It was considered "gamey" ...

What was your DL level over the target? Also, what would the results be if the planes flew in at 10 or 15k? Does that make a difference? If so, is the difference worthwhile?

DL levels were at maximum...with the recon planes flying every day at 10k feet without any opposition (no day fighters present)....

Gotta make some tests at 10k....

Doesn't seem very impressive atm, that firebombing wouldn't do anything.

On the other hand, seems that that would be a pretty minor strike if you wanted to wage a major firebombing campaign.

Did you have a chance to check what exactly the manpower hit 1, fire 6xx is? Does the fire actually hurt anything else except the man power?

I believe that invade Korea is find several LV9 AF to strat bombing the west part of Japan, which is basically untouched yet. And the intact HI there are producing 350 Shinden for Japs right now.

Allied won't able to effectively strat bombing with Shinden on cap therefore Shinden factories must go!

For this sole purpose we need to invade Korea. If Japs dare to contest us at Korea, and they happened to loss a bulk of Army during that contest, thus leads to Soviet activation, I don't see why it should considered gamey.

Yes, all those fires only damaged 5 points of the armament industry....nothing more....

And eubanana, we're talking about 150 4engines bombers committed....the point is that a huge majority of them , every night, stray and don't reach the target

GJ, you are being too way to fair to Rader. The advanced introduction date of his modern fighters was an exploit of a major bug and it does not matter if he did it deliberately or unknowingly. It has given him an undue advantage. I recommend that you have a frank discussion with him about this and perhaps you can work out a solution. This fighter should not show up under the best of circumstances until mid to late 45.

Personally, I would have a big problem it this happened to me and consider it a game breaker. I can't imagine many Japanese players who think this is a reasonable or fair way to play Japan...The Sam is bad enough, but you can expect to see his jets within a few months...

Invading Korea and presenting the IJ command with the choice of facing those forces by bringing in troops from China (weakening that front) or Manchuria (risking or outright triggering Soviet Activation) or facing the invasion by bringing in forces from elsewhere + forces present - that seems like a legitimate strategic maneuver to me. Even if those invading forces were success enough that they were sent into Manchuria to attrite IJA forces down below 8,000 AV seems legitimate, as IRL IMO the Soviets would jump in if they saw western troops beating the tar out of the IJA in Manchuria. The Soviets would have the double motive of opportunity and opposing western influences.

I haven't taken part in all the discussions in this AAR, but I think your idea was sound as in not gamey. Maybe it would have been a bridge too far without Suddenly Hairy already a success, though.

Well, so long as we're talking theoretically about what the Soviets would have done in this alternate history...

I suspect that the Soviets would be seriously angry about the surprise (mostly) American invasion of Hokkaido and Honshu with ground troops. The presence of so many American troops right on the Soviet Frontier, let alone and Japanese home islands would be causing conniptions in top Sov circles. I wouldn't put it past Uncle Joe to politically protest or make it harder for the Americans to move further into the Asian mainland. Expect them to expedite their Manchurian invasion at all hazards.

As the Sovs would likely have to use some forces from their European front in this area, this would clearly reduce their ability to shoulder the entirety of land combat in the European continent. I would expect them to clearly-very clearly-remind the Allies what the price would be to their backing off the pressure on the Germans at this tender period in the war. Think Ike wants another 10 German Divisions in Normandy before June, 1944? Think Marshall might put some pressure on the conduct of the Pacific war? I'd argue that all signs would be to 'slow things down' in and around Japan, particularly on the Asian mainland.

So, if you're stumping for a fight on Korea, I say you're also looking to weaken Russia's cooperation in the Soviet Far East, increasing the likelihood of immediate Soviet activation and capture of Manchuria themselves.

I think the Soviets would have 'jumped' based upon this massive surprise attack on Hokkaido, the Kuriles and now Honshu. Any Korean expedition would merely be icing on the cake. I also think there would be cries from Washington about adventurism and slowing things down-lest the Normandy invasion have unanticipated resistance.

Then i swicthed for 3 nights on Tokyo airfields where 1300 planes were grounded... 150 flak guns present (those that starts with downfall scenario). 10,000 feet, no night fighters....

results of the whole test run (16 days) in the screenshot...

...i really don't find night bombing borked in any way....

I disagree that they would have pulled troops from the European front. That was simply too important to them, and to Stalin himself. Would they have Activated upon the invasion of Hokkiado? I don't know, but I suppose it's possible as I do agree about their concerns. If they did, that of course would make the Allies job a bit easier on Hokkaido and northern Honshu and vice versa. I suppose I'm being a bit conservative when I say, in effect 'if the Allies weakened the IJA in Manchuria below 8,000 AV the Soviets would Activate IRL'. But to the matter of would doing that be gamey, I think it's clear that it would not be. Certainly I'm not advocating an HR to trigger Soviet Activation for something other than the drop below 8,000 AV (although such HRs for other contests are of course quite valid, I'm just speaking about GJ & Rader's contest).

Right. So, something to model the political cost to the Americans of an early Soviet activation should be considered. After all, this may not have been a 'good' thing for the American high command. So, I propose that early activation of the Soviets be done by a home islands invasion, an Allied Korean invasion or-last but not least-an Allied Manchurian invasion.

Any pre-scheduled Soviet activation instigated by the Allies, would have the effect of costing approximately 2,000 political points to the Allied WiTP:AE command. This charge would reflect the serious political costs (post-war) of a greater than historical Soviet force distribution / political influence throughout the area.

But, no, in GreyJoy and Rader's game, an Allied invasion of Korea is in no way gamey and does not appear to be in contravention of any HRs. I'm just suggesting that it (whether or not the Manchurian garrison is weakened below 8,000AV) should immediately activate the Soviets. There should be post-war consideration to the conduct of the war, much as there are VP level limitations once 2+ atomic bombs are used. Perhaps an early Soviet activation due to aforementioned Allied invasion could shift the victory level down one? Yes. That sounds better.

I believe the Manpower attacks need to be at less than 10,000ft to have the desired effect, and sustained on a daily basis.

Note that FIRES are the only way to actually destroy factories rather than just damaging them.

I have had some success with unopposed Sallies in China doing this, so B-29s shouldn't really have a problem. I would consider sending over night fighters in sweeps to get rid of the Japanese night fighters thereby allowing the bombers to deliver their ordnance in an un-disrupted and more accurate manner.
