I have a low habitability volcanic planet where i found zenobia fluid that i can't colonize yet. I've built large bases above it to mine and protect it.

I'm playing the game normally and then it is colonized by a neutral without any warning. I'm then told they're not trading my zenobia fluid with me because i have 2 other mining bases in 'their' system. (but i had 3 mining bases in this system originally until they colonized by zenobia planet.)

This situation just doesn't seem right. Theoretically my captain of my defensive bases and ships above the zenobia planet should tell me there's an enemy colony ship on the way. Or I should have an option to tell my defensive and mining bases to shoot enemy colony ships. I don't want to stare at the zenobia fluid planet all day to protect it from being colonized.

I've posted this message in the wishlist thread as well.

Thanks for your consideration,
Hetulik

Good thing you posted this to the wishlist as well, it would be a good option to have.

The biggest problem with it being automated that I can see is a rep hit, likely that if on auto your bases/ships will destroy the incoming colony ship. That's just bad for business as you will seen as a murderer of innocents. This is cool if you don't care about that sort of thing, although it then leaves others who may not wish to indulge in such activities stuck in a corner.

If this were to be implemented it would need to be done in a way where they only fire once at the ship, this would cause it to run to safety yet not be destroyed.

We could have an option to say 'The world you are approaching has been claimed by the <insert your Empire's name here>. If you proceed beyond this point we cannot be responsible for your safety' or less formally 'Oi! This one's ours!!'

This could be backed up by the ability to garrison non-colonised worlds so that troops could simply round up any unwanted aliens and put them back in their colony ship and send them on their way.

As with all things this would be a two-edged sword though as AI empires should be able to do exactly the same.

Why not just invade?

Besides, you should always colonize special resource planets - even if they're low quality. You want to defend those with all you've got.

This is just as bad as forcing total destruction in that it will likely cause a war. Where a few shots to warn them off you manually control still allows a player to play a somewhat more peaceful race that does not kill civillians.

Yes, if this policy can be automated it would be awesome.

I like the way it is now - if plopping down a mining base on any planet you may later on want to colonize is a way to stop the other races from colonising - then it would just become a race as to who "claims" the most planets, first.

If you want that planet - colonize it (and be forced to get the tech necessary to do it). And if you can´t go that way, just invade it once someone else colonized it. The diplomacy hit you get from "forcing" a colony ship to turn away should be just as big as "peacefully" occupying the planet right after colonization. After all, which colonist in it´s right mind would fight against a few battalions of well armed troops? See, no violence :-)

And if you think that forcing the colony ship to go home with a few warning shots is a humane solution - who said that supplies on board are enough for more than the single trip? You are basically starving 100k of people by denying them to land!

A valid point....if they weren't in stasis

I agree with most of what you guys are saying. However, it's still largely irrelevant to the point that Hetulik brought up in the first place.

What he's saying is that it would be greatly appreciated if we, the player, would be informed when an alien colony ship is approaching a planet we're mining....AND that we have the option -- assuming we're willing to take the reputation hit -- to fire upon (and if necessary, destroy [if it refuses to run away]) said colony ship in order to preserve our "claim" to that planet.

Conversely, Howard Mitchell is correct in that we should then also need to be informed if we're about to colonize a planet being mined by another empire. Same goes for his statement that the AI should be able to do this as well.

I'm totally fine with there being a reputation penalty for this type of action; that seems only fair. But like Hetulik, I would at least like to see this as an option available to the player(s) to indulge if they so choose.

I made a similar request a while back and there were some strong feelings expressed here:

One of the suggestions above was to invade a planet...

Can you actually invade a planet you are incapable of colonizing?
Although, you know, I would suspect if the colony was such a important resource, a true space faring race would be capable of garrisonning a planet to prevent its occupation...

Ah, I remember that thread well. My old Romulan temper flared up a bit.

It seems that thread ended up as more of a debate about border/territory systems. It was great to see Elliot enter the discussion and ask for ideas.

I just wish that we had some evidence that our debates resulted in something more than a stress reliever for our pent up 4x desires(Lol...not to be confused with 3x desires)

Thanks for everyones replies on this topic. Also my thanks Martok for reiterating my point. I'm just interested in a notification that one of my large mining bases (where i have fleets and large defensive bases as well) is about to be colonized, so i as the player can choose to take 1 shot at the colony ship to send it away from my mining station. I looked at some of my previous autosaves and my volcanic zenobia fluid mining planet was colonized over 30 minutes of game time ago and i didn't even realize it. Now i'm going to have to go to war to take my planet back, and i'm going to have to destroy my large heavily defended mining station and heavy defensive stations that became owned by the computer. If the planet can be colonized out from underneath me, at least don't let the computer have my stations. It would make this game more realistic to have a notification an event like this is about to occur.

In my own games i make it a rule not to colonize a planet if an opponent has a mining base there because it's a very gamey tactic to use in my opinion.

Thanks everyone,
Regards,
Hetulik

Not if you run in with heavily shielded transports and drop troops and run.

But the defensive stations will damage your invading troops. It's in the patch change list.
