Anyone heard from Dan? I haven't heard from him since Wednesday and that's not like him.

I saw on the news the massive tornado outbreak that roared through Alabama and Georgia yesterday so I am assuming that his power may be out. Hopefully nothing worse than that. The NWS reported 138 tornadoes swept through the area though most were in Alabama. They said its the worse outbreak since the early 70s.

I believe he is in NW Georgia so there is some chance he is being effected by the weather. Thinking good thoughts

Yes, indeed, let's hope it was just that. Kelley (TomLabel) said the devastation in Birmingham was epic, and NW Georgia is right down the road. The Brown's Ferry power plant was shut down, leaving a hundred thousand (or so) without power. Lots of power outages in NE Alabama and NW Georgia (still).

I am just glad to hear he is not in Alabama, I have not seen that kind of destruction since Hurricane Hugo.

Ringgold, GA (just S of chattanooga) was hit hard as well...we had baseball sized hail in Knoxville and some fatalities in surrounding counties. The storms trained up I-75 into our neck of the woods and hit hard in the late afternoon and evening.

Hopefully Dan is well and is simply experiencing a power outage.

IIRC, Dan lives in the Dalton area, which is just south of Ringgold - the town in Georgia that was hardest hit. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution there are 30,000 households in NW Georgia still without power, so it is possible that he can't log on to the internet yet.

I live near Murfreesboro, TN and we only got one EF0 and some straightline winds. Nothing compared to what happen elsewhere in TN, MI, AL, and GA. We lost power for a couple of hours at my house. I did not spot any severe weather myself, so no reports from me to the NWS. I am a trained spotter with over 25 years experience.

I live about 60 miles south of him. That area was hit pretty hard. Hopefully he was not in the throw zone. Lots still without power and will be for days.

We had a night of very bad storms. Various areas around me were hard hit.
I work for a public utilities company that also controls the water levels of our rivers. I am in the legal department so I don't actually handle anything related to production. But from talking to friends and co-workers several areas are disaster areas. About one million of our customers are without power or had no power for a significant amount of time. With all the recent rain over the month of April we are struggling with water levels too.
Back before the 1930s' before the dams and land reclamation took place, SE Tennessee and north Georgia was one of the most improvised areas of the United States. Most of the coal was gone by then and farmers could only eek out subsistence crops due to flooding nearly every spring. The New Deal created the company I work for and brought the rivers under control.
Storm systems and tornadoes are unfortunately common in this part of the world. But this Spring has been exceptionally bad. Uncommonly strong storms along with their frequency have made for a bad spring.

One more thing. Talk about just plain bad luck. My boss bought him and his wife a brand new Audi the second week of April and it was demolished by hail last night. He said the individual stones were the size of small apples.
He brought in pictures and the top of the car (and this is a big four door sedan) was smashed in by about an inch as well as the hood and trunk. The front and back windows looked like someone has taken a golf club to it. One of the side mirrors was torn off the car.

I work in downtown B'ham area & live just south of B'ham & was lucky that the monster that killed Tuscaloosa & N Birmingham areas just missed my work & the ones where I live went just south of me so I only had power loss for yesterday. We were standing outside watching some debris fall/float by in the sky from the Tuscaloosa time while it was tearing up the Pleasant Grove/Fultondale area (I work in the UAB/university area of town). We did have someone here at work that lost their house while they were in it & some friends of mine in GA also lost their house but all family was at least safe in both cases. It was unreal to watch the towercams from the news stations showing that monster churn across the land & that it stayed on the ground from MS to GA pretty much the whole time.

Hey, gents, the power is back on, so I am back in communication. I appreciate your thoughts. My family is fine and to the best of my knowledge there were no deaths in our county (Floyd). Catoosa County, to our north, was hit hard (12 deaths I think) as were the Alabama counties to our west.

Yesterday morning, I was just dropping my daughter off at the office as the rain began. According to the forecast, this was to be just a routine thunderstorm with the big storms coming late in the day. Truly, the sky did not look particularly ominous. By the time I reached my office, it was raining hard. On my way up the sidewalk, the power went out. Within two minutes, were were hit by 75-80 m.p.h. straight-line winds that were worse than either of the two Cat. One hurricanes I experienced during my Miami years (but nothing close to Hurricane Andrew in 1992).

The winds destroyed thousands of the huge oaks and pines so common in our area. Many residences were damaged and a few destroyed, but there was no loss of life.

We were really concerned about the evening storms, but in our particular area they were much less violent. We had a little bit of hail and alot of lightning, but no high winds.

Glad to hear Tom Label and the Tennessee folks (Fallsschirmjaager, Treespider, etc.) are okay.

Glad to hear that you and your family are all fine, Dan. I knew that Dalton was largely missed by the worst of the storm, but winds like that can cause damage even if they aren't tornadoes (thinking of the photos I saw of trees that fell into the buildings at Berry College...).

My office looks out on the Berry College forest land. Berry is the largest college (total area) in the United States - something like 26,000 acres. I do all my running and most of my mountain biking there. The developed part of the campus has lots of pasture, orchards, and woodlands. This area was hard hit by the storms. Hundreds of the huge old oaks and pines were destroyed.

We don't have television and my home computer is dial up (stone ages), so I haven't seen any of the video of the devastation that took place elsewhere. I know what I'm describing pales in comparison with the utter devastation in some places.

I thought that you lived in Dalton. Are you in Rome?

One of my friends from UGA, Jimmy Sturwold, grew up on Mt Alto so I visited a couple of times. In 1980 I rode my bike over there for the July 4th weekend (one day out, one day hanging out at the Berry College reservoir and another day to ride back to Athens). I've never been mountain biking on the trails up there but I recall that they looked pretty good for that purpose.

Really glad to see Canoerebel is ok....

On a lighter note, regarding "hail"........David Letterman started his TV career here in Indianapolis, and for years alternated between a local teen dance show and being a weatherman for Channel 13,(ABC at the time)......During one of his weather programs, he stated that the people in Zionsville(local town) should be wary of "hail the size of canned hams"............Local legend has it that a little ol' lady in Zionsville heard that report and was scared out of her knickers..

Her family complained to (then) station manager Chris Duffy and Letterman was fired!

(He then went to California and met his mentor, Johnny Carson)..

Ya might say "hail" was a good thing for Letterman?
