BBfanboy.....thanx for the input. I had thought about splitting the carriers into 2 groups if I had all my carriers in one place but since I launched the strike with 25 of my CVEs out of the battle I left everyone in the same hex.... the perfect recipe for disaster. The triangle pattern sounds good in theory if you are really at close range but with Japan's strike advantage of 8 hexes vs 7 hexes for the Allies a triangle would make it more likely that one of the 3 groups would be out of range of the Japanese (and possibly 2 of the 3 groups). Read on to see how small groups of IJN strike AC fight there way through massive Allied CAP. 3/15-3/16/45 STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND The B-29s were rested this turn but the 4 day aerial assault on Nagasaki must have really got Dave's attention. After missing the B-29s when he bombed Aparri last turn Dave reconned all the Allied level 9 Afs in northern Luzon this turn: Tuguegarao, Vigan, Legaspi and Aparri. Meanwhile....I bombed most of the Japanese AFs this turn that Dave had launched from the previous turn but came up empty. I continued to stage B-29s down to southern Luzon this turn and have a lot of CAP and LRCAP over all 4 AFs in northern Luzon so we may have a pretty large air battle next turn. The firestorm continues to burn at Nagasaki and is still at level 3300 2 days after the bombing ends. Japan now has lost 19,052 strategic points so the 4 day mission over Nagasaki appears to have been the most successful of the war. CENTPAC:BATTLE FOR AGRIHAN After another massive aerial and naval bombardment at Agrihan CENTPAC launches a pair of deliberate attacks: Ground combat at Agrihan (111,88) Allied Deliberate attack Attacking force 36737 troops, 302 guns, 1368 vehicles, Assault Value = 1846 Defending force 8125 troops, 104 guns, 34 vehicles, Assault Value = 135 Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 5 Allied adjusted assault: 2566 Japanese adjusted defense: 3 Allied assault odds: 855 to 1 (fort level 5) Allied forces CAPTURE Agrihan !!! SECOND NAVAL BATTLE OF THE BONINS After the disastrous results of the First Naval Battle of the Bonins...... 22 Allied carriers sunk/damaged.... we have been very conservative with the Allied carriers while we filled the shipyards with damaged carriers. But last turn I felt that I had a good chance to pull off a CV ambush so the Allied carriers were sent north to the Bonins to attempt to intercept the IJN carriers covering the re-supply of Iwo Jima. I had neutralized the Japanese Afs at Iwo Jima, Haha-jima and Chichi-jima but I was till concerned about the operational level 8 Japanese AF at Daito Shoto and smaller AFs at Miyake-jima and Izu-Oshima so I positioned the Allied carriers to effect an ambush about 80 miles SE of Iwo Jima. This time...I picked the time and place of the carrier engagement and I set up the range of the engagement but it wasnt what I was expecting. At the end of the 1st day of the turn... the opposing carrier forces were 8 hexes away from each other and even though both sides spotted each other repeatedly there was no engagement. Dave was surprised about that because the level of detection seemed to be very great for both navies but hypothesized that inclement weather must have postponed the engagement. My lead carrier TF was set with a max reaction range of 6 but the Allied carriers made no attempt to close the range over the 2 day engagement. On the 2nd day of the turn the Japanese carriers launched a major strike on the Allied fleet: Morning Air attack on TF, near Iwo-jima at 109,79 Weather in hex: Light rain Raid detected at 120 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet. Group patrol altitude is 13000 Raid is overhead As bad as things are they could have been worse. CV Yorktown and CV Hornet are sunk.....Ive been playing WitP for 10 years and thats the 1st time Ive lost a USN CV in either scenarios or campaign games. CVL Independence is sunk as are CVEs Block Island and White Plains. CV Intrepid is the only damaged CV with 24 SYS 67 FLT 35 ENG and the Allied carriers top priority is to get her safely back to port. CVL Monterey was hit by a torpedo but with damage of only 4 SYS 7 FLT she will remain on the line. CVE Casablanca, CVE St. Lo and CVE Nassau are floating wrecks and Id be surprised if more than one of them made it back to port. Japan loses 535 AC in A2A combat vs 25 Allied AC. The fully modernized/upgraded Allied flak only accounts for 23 Japanese AC.... less than what BB South Dakota shot down in one day in the RL Battle of Santa Cruz in Oct. 1942. Japan loses 74 A6Ms, 447 Jils, 53 Kates and 62 Grace but unfortunately most of these bombers were shot down after they had dropped their lethal payloads. Im trying to look at this lemon of a turn as if its lemonade. The IJN torpedo bombers have been savaged and it will take a bit for Dave to refill their squadrons.... at least with semi-experienced pilots. I am looking at this to be a potential opportunity for the Allies to accelerate their time schedule in regards to a 2nd assault at Iwo Jima. The carriers that were lost will be more than made up for by the 25 CVEs now sailing from Brisbane to Rabaul. I will start loading assault troops for the reinforcement of Iwo Jima this turn but there is one more amphibious attack we need to launch before we re-visit the Bonins.
