There are other benefits to knocking Russian counters off the table (IE pockets) early, especially in the north; it makes it much harder to checkerboard. If I bulldoze and rout a pile of units in an attempt to get more speed on the first turn, I will face that many more Russian units that manage to rally and unfortunately, they will be the ones the Panzers have to do the heavy lifting on.

I think Mynok is on the mark as far as the German infantry goes. No Russian line is safe against German infantry early in the game and getting it as far forward as quickly as possible is one of the big keys no matter what section of the map you are discussing.

Now, something to consider for that German infantry tactics wise. Is it better to have some German infantry do most of the heavy lifting on turn 1/2 and advance other infantry as far east as possible or should you take a more balanced approach where most of the infantry participates in say an attack or two at most, but you work on trying to advance the mass as a group?

With the low costs of deliberate attacks on turn one, you can do both. Use most to blow the line and they can move forward a long way. Yes, there's a point to using minimal stacks to make attacks, but don't let that constrain getting all those brown jobs retreating or routing.
