Data we talk about a core mod which will force you to establish a new game folder... that is pretty hard and you will need several programms to do so. It is not about writing some text files. BUT it is possible.

And that will allow us to add / mod ship components and tech? It would be awesome.

Actually - as long as a game designer does not offer their game studio as a mod kit version - it will force you to open all the game files with special programms and try to understand what exists in which data to unfold the programm. Than you add your parts and connect them.

So yes if you dive into the main data structure of a game you can always modify everything... considering you keep it whole and don't break it. That is always possible if there is no protection which has to be cracked first. Normally - without a go of the company - this is considered a copyright infringement.

Rather than all this speculation, I'm going to wait for the Modders Guide to be released, then we will know definitively what can and can not be modded.

The hard and a little illegal way is always possible.

Very good statement Shark! As one of the testers, I will say this as we're very near to the release
candidate. {A Son'a's final rant if you may}

Some of the new people to this game and this forum don't fully understand that this game has been
created from basically one brilliant programmers mind and a very small support staff and small budget.
Read Elliot's interview here:
http://truepcgaming.com/2011/10/28/4x-space-odyssey-distant-worlds-interview/#more-2580

In addition, the staff and testers are spread out all over the globe and are not meeting regularly in
the same room bouncing ideas. Bear in mind also that this game is only in its second year of existence.
In my humble opinion, and mine only, I see too much of people wanting to whine about what this game has,
doesn't have, should have, etcetera. Or already want to tear apart and decompile the game to their own
individual liking before the game is even released. I mean just look at the 2 wishlists. Don't get me wrong, and I most probably will get flamed for this, but let's just let the game be released on its
own merits first, then we modders (yes I'm one also) can decide what the game lacks and needs if anything.

But in the meanwhile, from what I've seen in the genre, this game ROCKS! Trust me, I've played them
all and have modded those that could be. My first space game was StarFlight! I've been hooked since!
So as of this moment, I retire the thought in my head that MOO2 is the greatest. As of now:

This is the amazing part of this program... one man...
And what is more, one man has also taken time to test speed performance and other improvements... such as the graphics presentation model.

If I, for one, have sounded unappreciative of this, I am SINCERELY sorry. I was at one time a programmer; I know the difficulties...

It just is sort of fun to speculate... just like I speculated about how Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith would turn out.

What is even more impressive is that Elliot has taken his dream, made it a reality, then even listened to our suggestions and actually incorporated a lot of them...he let us share in the dream. DW was great to start with, and it just keeps getting better and better.

What is more impressive for me is that Elliot remained one man but the expansions continue to expand. Legends brings much more than ROTS did from what I see, not to mention a patch for ROTS is also approaching.

I cannot imagine the coding that goes with this...

Lots of if/then statements...

Example:

If DW continues to grow and expand;
then Shark7 will be happy = TRUE!

OR

If (DW = released) AND (Release Date <= Thanksgiving Date)
Then
Move thanksgiving dinner to computer room
Move thanksgiving dinner to microwave
Move Day-after-thanksgiving shopping to another day

Is this the kind of coding you mean?
You can see that I did a little coding in the days when COBOL compilers for computers still existed...

Can you mod the default picture backgrounds used for characters.I am talking about backgrounds not the actual character used that show space and planets.

As far as I heard a transparent one will get a predestined background, a non transparent one will keep his background. Just give them the background you want.

That is correct Nedrear. Just remember the image needs to maintain the 300 x 300 size parameter.

3 of the women appear to be hot. Any chance there could be a requirement that all women characters have to be hot?
