The afternoon Allied strike was smaller, but still big enough to get through the very hefty CAP over the KB.

Kaga was hit hard, and Katsuragi as well. These later strikes were really the most important for the Allies, and changed the battle in their favor.

Some of the later strikes did get a few planes through and they mostly hit the CVEs, putting those down for good.

Amazingly, this TF was virtually untouched, apart from one hit on Akagi. The air groups are wrecked of course, but there is the possibility of flying more planes on for tomorrow. I'll have to assess whether a second day strike attempt is a good idea as I look at he bases, air groups and positions of the fleets.

Here are the air losses for the day. Wow! Better for us this time, but still a lot of planes downed. Glad the Allies lost so many as tomorrow could get interesting.

Here is the current list of Allied ships lost for June 1. I think it will end up being 20-22 CVE sunk.

THE GREAT BATTLE OF 1 JUNE, 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: Subs played no part in anything today.

KOREA: This is a bold move by the Allies, and asserts their intentions of really fighting it out for the troops on Korea and for the Moppo invasion. Not that I doubted they would, but this changes the situation dramatically. Still, the possible 8 hex strike is viable for the future of our remaining KB, and combined with a much stronger LBA for June 2, could give the Allies trouble. We'll see.

The battle is fairly even in terms of outcome. It's too bad most of the strikes going for fleet CVs missed their targets. Flak was effective for the Allies, and at least 5-6 flights of Judy missed the bigger flattops. The one hit on CV Intrepid is critical though as it was a Grace kami that produced an ammo storage explosion message. That likely means serious damage. Enough at least to need shipyard time. So 20-22 CVEs taken out plus a CV sidelined is not too bad for this point in the war, especially since the Allies still haven't opened Moppo or gotten reinforcements in.

There is a chance they're going to move in force tomorrow. That would be ideal, but I now have to decide if I commit the IJN surface forces or just the LBA. I hesitate to lose the bombardment option by naval forces as the bombing can be sporadic due to weather and slowed if the Allied CVs settle in close.

STRAT BOMBING: None.

HOME ISLANDS: A division heading to Fusan has it's convoy struck as CAP was tired and out of position late in the afternoon phase. Two transports sunk, but there is still 20k supply and most of the troops are fine on the bigger ships, docked and unloading now.

It'll take a while to set this turn up. A lot of decisions to make. A lot of air groups to get ready.

CHINA: The IJA in China is in trouble, but the focus is farther North of Japanese command. These orders ware given knowing what could happen. Some units are being flown from Formosa to shore up the Shanghai area, even though there is little to no supply here.

Also in the news, Hong Kong falls. Kweiyang is also over-run once the Commonwealth troops made it in and probably also opened a supply path to the Chinese. They still take 20k+ casualties. China is in the endgame. It will all be Allied by the end of June 45 I predict.

CAP engaged:
VF-7 with F4U-1D Corsair (20 airborne, 10 on standby, 4 scrambling)
20 plane(s) intercepting now.
6 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 6000 and 39300.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 38 minutes Some groups had long full group intercept times, although a lot were already in position, likely due to none being higher than 10k. Our strikes were all set to 15k today, which is a bit of a switch from previous practice. I've been going in at 10k for all of the other recent battles.

The fields at Moppo are again closed up, and a few planes on the round. Strikes will continue. now for some other big decisions.

This is interesting. Haven't hit that yet, or seen evidence of it there. Hmmmmm.

Wow looks like another carnage in your favor IMHO.

At this time in the war, what do you need carriers for? CV planes from land bases will not be quite as effective as a good CV fleet, but still get the same job done. The only disadvantage is that the less CVs you got, the less of his own he needs to divert to hunt em down.

Congrats on the fight you are putting up at this stage.

Thanks. A fun one again.

Using the beta the CV strikes are still the most useful to punch through the big Allied CAP. One of the goals of my aggressive positioning of the KB has been to lessen the number of CV/CVE in the near term, so to limit the CAP that will face LBA strikes.

While we did lose about half of the KB and many more top notch pilots, the Allied losses in airframes, pilots and decks should cut their CAP in half and limit possibilities for LR CAP over reinforcement forces to Moppo. The LBA will have to step up now, and hopefully we can follow up before the Allies have a chance to replenish. Any of he CVE or CV Intrepid and VL Princeton that were damaged should still be in range tomorrow.

There is also a strange grouping of what look to be supply shipping around the Chinese coast. There is a lot that could be spread out to cover tomorrow, and with no air base in range, our fresh LBA groups will go against a tired but expert Allied CV CAP.

Here is a map. Obviously if the Allies go to Moppo everything on map will try to hit them. If they choose to make for safety to replenish, a lot of transports, plus some damaged ships, won't be able to completely make it into safe LR CAPed island territory tomorrow. If the CVs do stay with them they may have to spread out to deal with various speeds, or slow down and stay in the main firing range around Southern Korea. I'll pop a few things over to Taihoku and the Chinese coast to see if they can nail something shying away from the Japanese main bases.

Just out of interest: What are the warning signs over the HI bases referring to? Are you already this short on supply at home, or is this just referring to an obvious oil/ressource shortage?

It seems for some reason the KB a/c tend to concentrate on attacking CVEs rather than CVs, as happened in one of my previous games.

Oh yeah. We are definitely short on supply!

About half of the HI/LI production is torched and the last fuel drop other than local sources came in January 45, so most supply comes from LI. Add t that the massive influx of new units, air training groups and the combat here every day, and many bases are struggling. Some f the flags though are misleading. Hiroshima has around 50k supply at last check, but also a LOT of airframes. I have to pick and choose where to base planes and what to use. Fusan is a level 9 though with good supply and more being dropped now, so it will be the major striking base.

Last time they got really good hits on a bunch of CVs. It seemed that the ones that went for about 4 of the CV just didn't get hits. Once the CVEs got slowed too I think they just piled on. Still works, as if it is 20 CVE that is a potential for around 500 planes, plus most likely removing another 120 for Intrepid and Princeton at least short term.

Good question. I've been flying bits and pieces in plus a bit of supply that's just filling units right now, but It's pretty much up for grabs with a big move. I think he should maybe have went for it with the Moppo move. One base in Injun country is not enough. Maybe now that the KB is lessened he'll go there.

Good show!

BTW, I'm a little unclear based on the comments here about what is it that the Allied CV fleet is doing: purely striking or are they escorting troops? I might have missed or misread something here, but I've come away unclear on that.

Thanks.

As to the intentions I can only surmise that he's attempting to clear the way, weaken Japanese striking power, to get reinforcements to korea or some other move to the North.

There are ships that appear to be amphibs and some others that are unknown near the China coast. The whole mass of stuff has been hanging around the East China Sea for the past week or two.

Tactically, I agree with your assessment that now was the time to pull the last trigger on the KB. You got better results that anticipated. 20 CVE's is a big dent. KB is gone. Get those air groups bought back ASAP and get them filled out again. The HI is now your KB and as you note, all those 1E bombers get through far more effectively than any of the 2E bombers .... you need those groups back in play ... Grace is really nice now because of her range. I wish she had 1x800kg as the torp replacement for DB, but that's not how the armament is setup. 2x250kg will still hurt anything below a BB ... including CV's. So each Grace gets two chances to hit ... twice the odds of Judy .... I have always felt that compensated for the smaller bomb ... yard time for you now is almost the same as a sinking ...

Yep. Exactly. Although interestingly I'll still have a force that can work at getting the 8 hex strike on occasion. Might work if I just fly no CAP and put it all on escort and strike. I'll have roughly 340 airframe spots on decks right now. So if I used 200 Sams and no CAP, a 140 plane strike package could still pack a wallop, especially if he does try a landing in the next few days. If it doesn't get sunk repairing, Kasagi could be back in a month or so, Taiho in maybe two.

Bought back three groups already and the PPs are gone for now. Every few days I can get another. Nice that the pilots come back too.

I love the Grace, and I also think the 2 x 250kg is actually a good balance to the Judy's big 800kg. The range is amazing, and I still have a decent pool of these. more Judys though.

Good battle. Way to land one on his chin.

Is that a Dropbox setting that captures your screenshot as an image file as you take it? Can you share how you do that? It would be handy to do what you do (take pics during replays).

200 Sam's against his 1000 plane CAP .... they would need help ... My tactical guidelines for taking on CV forces is to have a 3:1 edge in total planes compared to CAP. Preferrably fighters, but doesn't have to be. So for me to take on his main CV force, I need 3000 planes ... a coordinated strike would be great, but even piecemeal it will eventually get through. For my 3000 planes I am looking for ~9 CV's ... 3CV's/1000 planes committed. Meaning I am willing and prepared to trade 1000 ac+pilots to take out 300 planes capacity of the allies. I plan for ~12000 ac and pilots to accomplish this ...

Ah in this case my original comment about the lacking value of KB is partly void, as it provides a platform for a couple of hundreds of aircraft without consuming supplies per mission.

Good luck there! Now it is time for Götterdämmerung!

Yeah. Just a dropbox setting so that every time I hit alt>prtsc it goes rich to drop box. I think dropbox just asked me if I wanted to send them there once when I took a screenshot, and once it got set up has been working ever since.

Lost a lot of pilots yesterday, but they did what they were supposed to do. Here is a list filter by missions. Hoshikura, V. tops the list with 1335!!!

Pretty remarkable when you con side that is more missions than days in the campaign so far! We've played about 1302 turns, if my count is correct.

Amazing some of these 80+ experience pilots make it this far. There are quite a few still from the beginning of the game.

DAY 2
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So the turn is away to Jocke. I had a malware hit the game computer last night. Some thing that encrypts files unless you pay a fee. Silly. I have few files on this computer so I'm not too worried, but it's a hassle as usual to figure out how to remove it. That will be this afternoon's project.

Jocke will need some time for this one too. He'll have some tough decisions to consider I'm sure. Scuttle the damaged and move South quickly? Try to save some and stay in the heart of our LBA range longer? Risk hitting the ports where our damaged might go? Land reinforcements at Moppo, or some other landing up the coast?

It'll be interesting again.

SHIP LOSSES: IJN
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here are the losses for the IJN in the last month!!! Yes, this is the list for the last month. As stated before, the Es are the kami ship of choice. They have been there to clear the way for bombardments, get Allied ships lower on ammo and ops points and make mine fields 'known' in whatever way possible. Of course they've done a number in Allied subs as well, which will be shown in the next list. The crazy thing is that I still get 2-3 a week new and there are a ton left to use!

Destroyers are another story. now that our need for them in the KB has lessened more will be allocated to surface combat. Losing 31 in the month is pretty dire, but this is mid-45, and the Allies have actually lost more.

The Yamashiro is out for a good while, maybe the war, but the Mutsu and Nagato are coming back in a few days from repairs.

About 15 new AMc have just been converted. That ought to last at least two months with the current pace of Allied air-mining and the ones we have left. MLs can supplement with even higher loss rates, but what else will I use them for?

CV ---- 2 (maybe 1-2 more in the next few days out of the 4 heavily damaged)
CVL ---- 2
CVE ---- 3

BB ---- 3 (with Yamashiro heavily damaged)
CL ---- 1
CS ---- 2

DD ---- 31

E ---- 75

SS ---- 6

PB ---- 10

AMc ---- 9

SHIP LOSSES: ALLIES
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This list is of course incomplete. Below are the estimates and farther down I've put the damage list from the previous CV battle when the Moppo invasion went in. There should be several more CVs, CVLs and many CVEs still to be added from those several days and this recent engagement. I've put in probable estimates.

Lots of guess work, but really it's just a lot of ships hit in such a short amount of game time. Wow.

For the subs most of these listed are pretty close to if not completely confirmed. I'll gladly trade 75 E for 34 subs and a closed fields at Moppo.

CV ---- 5 (2-3 more heavily damaged, 3-4 more lightly damaged)
CVL ---- 3 (1 more moderately damaged)
CVE ---- 28 (3-4 more moderately to heavily damaged)

BB ---- 1 (1-2 more that might need yard time from torpedo hits)
CA ---- 1 (four more that took torpedo hits)
CL ---- 2-3 (3 more that might need repair from torps or kamis)
CLAA ---- 2
DD ---- 31

APA/AKA ---- 12 (maybe 5 more, and a lot damaged to some degree)

SS ---- 34 (with many more damaged)

DE ---- 3

PT ---- 72
