Hi all, quote:
ORIGINAL: Grollub You are overanalysing that sentence ("gaining an advantage etc"). Since there is no referee with the ability to see into the future, the referee has to make a call for every situation as it happens. You can't "back up". Period. These are two different situations and that is why I tell you that where Navas was in the first is totally irrelevant, since he was on-side when he scored. Otherwise, there would be a need for rules on how long time you are supposed to "go back" in time to rule on the current situation. 3 seconds? 5 seconds? 15? one minute? Surely you see that this would cause even more absurd situations. I really do understand what you are saying... I really do... But, IIRC, in the 1970's the off-side rule was different - the tactics then was that you permanently had one attacker near goalkeeper of the opposite side... it was horrible... With strict adherence to situation like yesterday we can essentially have the very same thing (but this time two attackers are needed - just like yesterday)... IMHO the referee should have some sort of "memory buffer" - they already do that by giving yellow cards for some foul long after the foul occurred but they didn't want to stop the action...
