As was hinted by Torsten, Kirunas (WW2) renown comes from being the place where a large part of Germanys iron ore came from. Not the brightest moment in Swedens history, sucking up to Germany until '43 when the tide turned and we started sucking up to the western states instead. Ah well, at least we managed to stay out of the immediate war. One just wonders if selling out all your morals and prínciples was worth it :-/

On a brighter note, it's quite interesting to see what's happening up here now. The local iron ore mine has managed to dig as far down as 1.3 km, which is starting to destabilize the entire city centre. This means that they will move the entire town a couple of kilometers in 2017 ... quite a project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiruna

there are a lot of more events sweden can't be proud of. But I guess a nation this small has to bow to the stronger nations.

That is true for most nations, on both accounts.

Yes, I overheard some germans as well as a small group of french people at breakfast. I think they're here mostly for the skiing. Otherwise, the largest group of foreigners is the chinese, but I guess they're to look at the mining operations.

Consider yourself lucky that the Russians havent made it up there yet. I have it on good authority that they tend to pretty much ruin any place they visit in numbers.

Skiing? Up there? Alps to far away and too much daytime? But well... you never know...

I rather ment because of "Elchpark". Doesn't exactly sound swedish, no?

Hi all,

It was -10 degrees Centigrade here today...

But in 1-2 days the big thaw will come and temperatures will rise above +5 degrees Centigrade together with rain... with all this frozen snow that we still have (50+ cm over weekend) it will be flood of black mush...

Afternoon tithe.

Back home in Stockholm ... or "Anchorage" latitudewise

-6C, a balmy warm front obviously passing through.

Sadly, yes [:(.] Every place where any larger number of Russians shows up is to be avioded.

Skiing up there is excellent and is done in lighted ski slopes. Many find the darkness and the cold very exotic. As for the "Elchpark", it's closed during winter. Otherwise, we have quite an influx of tourists in the northern parts of Sweden during summer. Mostly Germans, Dutch and French.

As for those Germans at the hotel, they could also have been car testers. Most of Europes larger car manufacturers winter test their new models in northern Sweden or Finland. This particular group were wearing all the usual ski apparel though, so I assumed they were there for the skiing.
