Wow, that's exciting. Life is good here. Keeping busy with work, but if the furlough actually happens, I'll have 3 day weekends all summer. Guess it could be worse, but a 20% pay cut kind of takes some of the fun out of it. Of course, if I deploy this spring, I won't have to worry about the furlough.

I've been dealing with a 20% hours and pay cut every winter (Nov-Feb) for the past five years. You can survive, but you have to be very careful with your money.

Strangely, in that time the boss has been able to buy a vacation home in Scottsdale and took a three week vacation to a resort in Cabo San Lucas this past January...

Last place I worked for I was deployed out to their largest client as site techinical lead. On my watch the client extended the contract for 4 years and bought over £2m worth of kit. I worked 6 weeks straight without a day off. Then I was told there was no money for bonuses.

When I sent in my letter of resignation I had 2 job offers in my bacl pocket, 1 with a 10% increase in pay and another with 20%.

They sent me on garden leave so I had a wonderful 3 week paid for holiday over Christmas.

Hi all,

In past few weeks I was very busy with planning, organizing and scheduling adaption of kitchen for my sister in law and mother in law. Their adaptation is going on right now. After that I will have to do it on larger scale for my wife and I (we will be changing our kitchen, pantry, bathroom and corridor/hall)...

HI Mike - Going good here. Just working on a take home mid-term exam - Plant Stress Physiology. A cold beer and few turns of AE doesn't seem to work for plants. I wonder if I can get my professor hooked on AE??

Andy, T, Dixie! Hi guys! It's good to see you guys. Been a while. Getting AE turns in but not much time here.

How close are you to graduating, Andy? It seems to me it should be close.

Dixie, how's the RAF?

T, how's life? You don't seem to have changed a bit.

The RAF is, well it's the RAF simultaneously a pain in the arse and the best job ever. Just about finished putting the Hurricane back together, airshow season starts soon and then it's back to the madness.

What are the odds of you actually deploying?

Who knows. My unit is scheduled to go to Kuwait this spring for a year. I was on the roster to go then the army told me I was medically non-deployable from an issue I had in 1998. I had deployed since then with no issues. I guess they changed the regulations. Anyway, I need a waiver and the unit can't request it until 30 days out from the mob which is next week. So I'll find out one way or the other in early April. It's totally beyond my control. I was already told that if I get the waiver I'm going. I'm ok either way. If I go, I'll get promoted to LTC which would rate me really stupid pay. If I don't I'll retire as a major, which is fine with me. I've wanted to retire for a while now but can't because of the deployment. If I don't go, I can retire after they leave. If I do go, I can't retire until about July 2014. Also, if I get promoted and want to retire as an LTC, I need to stay in 3 years, which would be spring 2016. I'm burned out after 25 years. Not sure I could do another 3.

Mike,

I've heard of flight pay, combat pay, etc. but this is the first time I've ever heard of stupid pay. Learn something new every day.

The kids have played great for the first two games of the tournament and completely over matched their opponents. Killing a lot of time today between the 1030 and 2115 game times.

Catching up with an old friend from school in a few. We haven't seen each other since 1995! Then, it's back to work for the 3rd game later tonight. Semifinal berth is pretty much already locked up for tomorrow afternoon, then possible championship game starting at 1930 tomorrow. It will be a very late drive home after that game, should they earn a spot.

I'd wondered about the backstory of your new job, Simon. You done right to leave those turds. Thanks for sharing.

My wife left her University position 3 years ago when it became plain that their self-vaunted 'work-life balance' was fine. Provided that you found some way to never let it interfere with being on site 50 regular hours a week, do undercompensated overtime and take increasing (unpaid) emergency duty. Their 'good faith' negotiations with her were anything but. They were stunned when she told them their offer was unsatisfactory and tendered her resignation.

With enormous satisfaction, she became a self-employed worker and independent contractor. She works from home, has no commute, puts in probably about 60% of the time she did there, has flexible hours, no emergency duty and-best of all-doesn't have to deal with bureaucratic bull****. Oh, and she makes the same gross pay she did before, so no hit to the family finances.

I love it when a plan comes together.

It's 81 here... hot as hell compared to the last couple of weeks of 20-35...golf, shooting, and fishing anyone? Yes, please.

Just returned from a week's trip to my folks in Phoenix. It was a surprisingly pleasant 94F there yesterday. It's 24F here now. And there's some fresh white stuff on the driveway greeting us too...

I would take TO over any receiver in NFL history. Yes, I just said that.

Really? Jerry Rice was pretty good, or so I'm led to believe. Same with Carter, Irvin, Hayes, Fitzgerald....and the list goes on...I just don't see TO as a standout talent in that company.

He already has. But apparently I'm the one who is rude and over reacts without the slightest provocation. He on the other hand simply does what a chicken has to do.
