'President of Ghana' tricks local woman out of more than $15,000

PRESCOTT - A woman who said she got an email from the president of the Republic of Ghana lost over $15,000 to a scam, according to a police report.
The woman told police that, starting in April, she had sent small increments to a company in Ghana which said she would make a profit from the investment. Although she didn't realize it at first, she'd sent them $15,000 by the time she caught on.
In June, she received an email purportedly from the president of the Republic of Ghana, who said the woman was the victim of a scam and was due $750,000 restitution, the report said.
"(The victim) said she was convinced by the emails and the context of the emails and she further communicated with Mr. Johnson," the report said.
She was told she would have to pay to get the restitution money. She made payments of $200 and $300, then a final $150, all by Moneygram.
But suddenly, she began to hear from a man claiming to be from FedEx in the United Kingdom, claiming she owed about $650 and if she didn't pay it, he would contact the FBI, the report said.
She contacted FedEx and found out the whole thing was a scam.
