I bought me a new Dodge p/u.  I get to pick it up tomorrow.  DAYUM, those things are not cheap anymore   I am gonna miss my old one, though.  It was just getting comfortable.

Hope you have better luck with this one! The other one went out spectacularly.

Heard about the quake on CNBC as 'breaking news' this morning. Pretty decent sized one (8.2 IIRC), but the Chileans have a track record in dealing with them pretty well. I'll raise my glass of red to Chilean building earthquake codes!

Down here, we call it vino tinto. I'll put the best of it up against Bordeaeux and Napa

We're on the edge of the Nazca plate; a somewhat smaller but but more mobile (active) interface between the Pacific and So American Plates. Building codes are practical given the realities, but there's not much one can do if a volcano decides to pop it's top. Chaiten was a wonderful fishing town with an awesome restaurant and bar, and a fabulous walk along the shore. It's where we would fly into if we wanted to go up the Feutelefeu. It's just a field of ash now. Poo.

Don't know if you read much 'leisure geography' as a genre, but Basin and Range (John McPhee) is a fascinating read on the way much of the North American continent was made. It's a violent history and a freakin' miracle that humans managed to survive and prosper in an environment with catastrophic tendencies. The 'agricultural miracle' that is the central valley in California is due in part to it sitting on hundreds of feet of volcanic ash from a supervolcano eruption back in the day. Same sort of eruption today? Draw a big red "x" through 40 million people.

McPhee also wrote "Assembling California" with another tectonicist from my old alma mater (UCD). Seems interesting-and probably right up your alley, John.

Thanks ! Being a sailor, I’m more into “leisure climatology” for a fun earth science hobby. But living between two momma volcanoes on the ring of fire does tend to pique my interest . I’ll check those out. Thanks again. J

Thanks for the excellent suggestions!

However, I think I would promote "Bored-to-death Viking"

Here’s a fun one for ya’ll. When we split, my ex got our SoPac property and I got Chile. She sold it to another friend of ours whose family has sailing schools in New England and Florida and were thinking of expanding. So Jenny hits polynesia and surveys the ground, finds broken and cracked slab, and runs into Papa’ete to get some sackete or something.

She finds it, goes to pay, and the guy behind the counter says “Where’s the man?” Jenny’s clueless and says “No, no, I have francs, this is mine.” And the guy repeats and says “Where’s your man?” And Jenny says “I have no man, I just want to buy this bag of concrete.” And the guy says “No, this is not for women, you must have a man buy this.”

Jenny had to go out on the street and get some French guy to come in and pay for the sack of concrete. They wouldn’t even let her pick it up and put it in the trunk. Hootz gazootz life is unusal, isn't it? Ciao, John

Sounds like a fictitious point spread to me. "Take the Vikings and give 14 points". Of course, the NFL Vikings suck so bad (no offense / no offense ) that they would never garner a 14 point margin.

Afternoon folks. Just hit a milestone in this game today. After playing Allies against the AI for the last 4 years (several campaign starts trying to learn what's what, two journeys through mid 1942 watching a crazy aggressive Japanese Navy squander itself.... and 3 months in a failed attempt to play BOTH sides) I finally reached January 1st 1943.

Hope you're all having a great weekend.

Even though I live on the ring of fire, I’m not suicidal. I’m not building a hacienda that will get turned to toast. Am looking for a nice boat to keep in Puerto Montt so I can bail if I have to.

The paradigm is to take cruise ship people on sailboat tours of Ancuo and Islas de Chiloe. It pays for itself and she’s there when she’s wanted. Sort of a South American Castine, Maine Light. Am looking at 45-55 footers; Aldens, Frers, that sort. Most of them are in New England, but several are in the Caribbean. In any case, I’ll have to schlepp them through the ditch and down the SoAm coast.

If I get a NE boat (likely) I’ll let ya’ll know. I’m sure Mike and his sweetie and kids will want a ride down the intercoastal a ways. I’m a pipe berth kinda guy, so the master suite will always be open to them with sweeties and/or families. This is a six month project, so it will happen by late fall, this year 2014, which is spring, down South.

Mike should remember my last trip through the ditch. It was a big boat delivery and I tried to keep folks apprised as to our whereabouts. We all hooted and waved and I think Gert shook her naked bootie at the cameras at the Gatun locks. We all had a lot of fun.

Anyway, might have some more fun depending on where I can find the right boat. Ciao. JWE

Sounds like a great way to get in some sea time and a little income too, Symon. As a landlubber thought-what does "pipe berth" as in "a pipe berth kind of guy" mean?

Yeah!!! If you come through here without letting me know ahead of time, I will not be pleased.

My sister in law has a sign in her house that reads "Time spent on horseback does not count against your total allowance" I suspect the same thing applies to time spent on board a boat.

... and I do remember your previous trip through the ditch. We spotted the freighter you were tied up to in the locks, but I don't think the webcam was pointed low enough to spot you guys on deck.

Hi Leo,
I’m getting by, and getting better. It’s sure improving my Spanish. All I really knew was LA Mexican, and that had to change right quick. Most people in PV commune have some English, but they are very patient with my fumbling attempts at proper pronunciation.

Puerto Varas is very eclectic. There was a huge German immigration in the 1850s and their influence is very strong. There’s a lot of shops and bakeries with signs in German. Then we have tons of Brits, Irish, and Italians, along with some damn good pubs, cheeses and a pasta factory. Lately we’ve been getting the best of the young, educated, folks from Spain and Argentina. Just south of here is Patagonia proper, and it is still very much a vast unspoiled frontier. Did I mention that I love it?

Ciao. John

Good to hear John!

BTW, in late 1800's and early 1900's there was large exodus of Croats from Adriatic sea to South America due to disaster that crushed wine industry on Croatian Adriatic islands ("Peronospora" aka Plasmopara viticola)...

So we've had a couple of days in the 50s here. Snowpack is significantly reduced and biking / jogging trails throughout the community are again trafficked by lots of families on bikes or pushing strollers. Signs of life. Signs of Spring.

So I'm biking to the park here with miss Chickenboy junior earlier this evening when some numbskull teenage deadhead goes the other way on a motor scooter. On a biking trail. Dumbass. I did note with pleasure that he drove his scooter directly through a massive dog turd that some other dumbass left in the middle of the path. The thought of that wet fetid mess slinging onto his undercarriage or maybe (hope!) on him as he accelerated away made me chuckle.

It's the latent cabin fever I think.
