Thanks LST. The AO replenishment TF was an attempt to rectify my original mistake of creating barges in Truk to begin with. If I'd created them in Shortlands originally, I'd have been much better off. A "live and learn" moment.

Thread resurrection.

Were the Jap barges ocean-going ? Could they travel from i.e Shortlands to Vella Lavella across a deep sea hex?

Perfectly possible. Daihatsu barges had 200+ mile range on cruise speed and Pacific is a pretty timid ocean. As long as there is no waves depth does not matter

Nine-barge TF loads 4 fuel points.

The thing is, since this fuel is loaded as cargo, the TF does not use it - it unloads the fuel at Namu. I was wondering why some fuel has accumulated at Namu, since it is a port 0 base, and the code cannot move fuel automatically between Kwajalein and Namu. Now it seems the barges drop the fuel there.

Barge capacity is rated on CARGO space - it has no tanks to carry fuel as cargo. Hence, when you specify the barge to load fuel, it converts to "fuel in drums" which, because of the weight of the drum and inefficient shape, is half the cargo stowage capacity. Same thing happens when you load an xAK type with fuel or oil. So your fuel still arrives as fuel, but the barge just was not designed to carry its full capacity as a liquid without containers.

Thanks, but it seems that the 300 miles was achieved using staing areas. Anyway, if someone can find a record of loaded Jap barges travelling hexes other than coastal ones, please share it here.

Here it says that Japs used 20 barges for troop evac from Vella Lavella, but I can't find info to where the soldiers were taken

From "The Battle of Vella LaVella" article on the Combinedfleet.com website:-

"Both SELFRIDGE and O'BANNON, bows shattered, were able to limp home, but CHEVALIER was beyond salvage and LAVALLETTE scuttled her with a torpedo at 0311; all but 51 of her crew had earlier been removed. PT-boats later rescued 78 YUGUMO survivors while another 25 reached safety in an abandoned O'BANNON lifeboat. Commander Oosako was not among them.

While the above rescue operations were underway, Captain Nakayama Shigoroku's little convoy of barges and sub-chasers chugged purposefully into Marquana Bay, took on the 589 evacuees, and sailed for Buin at 0305, mission accomplished."

Another question.

I vaguely remember that barge TFs have to be attacked by air groups set to Naval Attack at 100 feet. Where does this rule come from?

The rule is missing in:

- game manual
- forum FAQ
- beta changelog

I went to my references and found this:

"3) TFs made up of only Barges and/or PT Boats can only be attacked by fighter-bombers OR air units with an altitude set to 100 feet. (Fighter-bombers are not required to have their altitude set to 100 feet to attack these ship types."

Trying to find the quote via Google gives me a WITP thread from 2004
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=603662

Is this a legacy rule from the previous WITP?
