GreyJoy - you are so right on the supply levels for Japan. I am so jealous playing the allied side for the first time in a campaign.

We have another 250k of supplies on the water spread out between LA and Sydney and another 100k between Cape Town and Perth. And this is just early 1942. I have great plans to sink Australia with supplies.

I am only one of three playing this and my primary responsibility is to keep US logistics moving. Having cut my teeth on logistics in this game as the IJN I was excited to try it as the allies. It is much easier as the allies to do so. It is all one way. With Japan, not so much.

CONUS:

VS4D14 arrrives and is filled with pilots and set to training on Naval Search. �Upgraded� to the SOC-1 to get more OS2U-3s in service where they will do more effective work other than training.

Exchanged more SOC-1s for OS2U-3s on the west coast. Going to give the OS2U-3s to ships instead of the SOC-1s to give better range.

ACM Oak arrives at Los Angeles. Sent to San Diego for minefield maintenance.

CANAL ZONE:

AP Thomas Jefferson arrives at Balboa. She is given an escort (APD McKean) and sent to San Francisco.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CENTPAC:

TF 416 set to a more aggressive patrol around Pearl Harbor to discourage float plane SSs.

Sending more supplies to Palmyra Is. from Pearl as it is the least loaded in supplies.

SOPAC

There are minor adjustments to TFs unloading at several bases to expedite unloading.

ANZAC:

Nothing to do here.

CHINA:

Minor adjustments to forces to match what it appears the Japanese are doing.

CONUS:

ACM Heath escorted to Vancouver for minefield maintenance duty. The DM will move back to LA once Heath gets there.

CANAL ZONE:

Nothing to do here.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CENTPAC:

DD Ward put into the repair yard at Pearl for conversion to APD. 28 days to completion.

S-46 sent to Brisbane for further orders once arrived there.

SOPAC

Americal is fully offloaded at Noumea, some 6k of supplies will be done shortly.

Set units unloading at Luganville to combat and started expanding Port/AF/Forts. Still more to unload, we can rotate ships to make it as efficient as it can be with a port 1.

ANZAC:

TF 264 loads units (RNZAF BF, N Force, 33rd Med FA) at Aukland with no supplies, sending to Brisbane for use further North. The BF can be used North of Townsville, and the military units can be used by Harvey as he sees fit.

CHINA:

Minor adjustments to units here.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

CONUS:

DDs Talbot, Dent, Crosby, and Kennison reach Seattle. Put into repair dock for conversion to APDs.

TF 361 loads 30th Cst AA unit for Dutch. Swapped escorts for this TF to give it speed 16.

TF 114 loads supplies for Dutch at Seattle.

CENTPAC:

VP23/A is moved from Midway to Palmyra, next to Luganville.

SOPAC

AV Wright arrives at Noumea. Escorts sent back to Pago Pago.

Lexington expanded her VB and VS squadrons to 27 aircraft each. Giving her 27/27/27/15 F/B/B/T. Did the change her TF to escort, put her in her own TF, disbanded it, filled her groups, and put her back into her TF, changed back to air combat routine to fill up airgroups.

SB-3/1 is disbanded and crews and airframes transferred to pool. It had 21 airframes in reserve.

CENTPAC:

Jeff, reminder that there are subs to assign, one at Midway and one at Pearl. I recommend the gap between Formosa and PI. This is a choke point. If anything we will get some scouting reports. One other, Seawolf, at Midway is damaged and I sent it to Pearl to be repaired.

SOPAC

xAK at Tahiti loads amphibiously supplies for Bora Bora.

ANZAC:

xAKs Anniston City, Makawao, Donald McKay, and Mormacrey are converted to AKEs at Sydney. Will be ready for service on 20 MAR 42.

Humphreys will escort Phoenix to Sydney from Townsville where they will both upgrade.

Humphreys to APD and Pheonix from 282 AA to 466. There is enough room in the shipyard. By the time Big E is done fixing up, the Phoenix should be just about done upgrading. Making the timing great, and giving big E some escorts to get back at it in a month in a half. We can also upgrade Big E in April.. shes 47 days or so in the shipyard the way it is.

The Chicago is heading north back to the SAGs in the Coral Sea. CVs and ASW groups are set to follow the reinforcement fleet, with bombers set to range 6 bombing PM. Chicago will rotate out in a month in a half for her upgrade once Big E is done.

Hornet arriving in Sydney soon. Nashville and the CL and CA in Sydney (dont recall names off the top of my head) will complete her cruiser escorts. That will make each CV group have over 3k in AA. In two months we should have four fleet CVs operational in Coral Sea/Aus. We are continuing to use them to stop any attemps to reinforce PM. Harvey is continuing to hold PM, forts are building back up, and more troops/supplies are a few days out. We continue running every surface vessel we can find into PM at night to hit the Jap troops, and bombing them by day from the CVs.

Smacking the KB a handful of turns ago really helps our situation. I still like exchanging one USN CV, a CA, and 50 days in the shiyard on Big E for three Jap CVs.

Noumea now has 400+ AV, forts, and Wildcats. Currently expanding AFAP. Louganville is starting to take on troops and expand.

Very curious to see what he plans on doing with half the KB by Java..

Harvey exchanged some airframes over Port Moresby. Warhawks for Zeros

Mavis, G4M1, A6M2s are all present at Horn Isl (no big surprise)....Harvey's bomardment went well, but I hope we destroyed aircraft and that was just FOW.

I'll post a shot tonight of my area...Madang, Shortlands, Horn Isl, and Rabaul all appear to be expanding. Rabaul still only lvl 3 AF.

CVs went into action after refueling/resupplying in Sydney. They're covering the reinforcements to Port Moresby as well as bombing the Japanese present there. Bombardment and air attack again at Port Moresby. Many Zeros in the skies around Port Moresby.. they haven't given up on the idea of taking it yet.

Chicago will join the bombardment group to go into Port Moresbay again. I think Hornet made it to Sydney this turn. I don't recall how far east she was, but close.

That will bring us back up to three USN CVs present in the Coral Sea.

Agreed on the Horn Is. bombing. Even then, Mavises take forever to repair.

Supplies and Fuel still moving to the theatre along with available forces. 28k of fuel on a replenishment TF is arriving in the area to support operations. Turning it over to Jeff and Harvey. They can empty it and send it back to Pago Pago to load back up and send back.

Hornet was only 4-5 hexes east of Sydney at the beginning of the turn. She should be there. She needs to upgrade her Dive Bomber units and expand them. I will take care of that during the turn.

It should be noted that we are going to be running short on DB airframes after this and may want to turn the bombarding over to the Air Force units and keep the Dauntlesses for anti shipping until the pools have a chance to build back up. The torpedo bomber supply is already spent and we won't get any more until the Avengers start arriving.

I like the idea of an extended fight for PM. The more time and effort expended there by the Japanese is the best way to defend eastern Australia. The ground elements at PM, including the 1st Aussie landing this turn, are not irreplaceable and serve a good purpose defending PM. Woring on getting bases in Northern Australia expanded (Townsville, Cairns and Charter Towers). Once more BFs and construction uits are available will push them to establish bases at Cooktown and eventually Coen.

The airframes my be a bit more challenging, as we will run out first I think. I am trying to get a rotation of units to PM from Australia (max effort this turn to support landing the 1st Aussie). The P-38E sqdn in constituting in Sydney and will be valuable to cycle in and out of PM for sweeps and LRCAP missions to help extract some losses on Jap airframes.

Agree on limiting ground bombardments by Carrier aircraft.

Depending how things progress, we can fly small raids with LBA from PM with light bombers for now, and eventually B-26s once they are ready to be committed to PM.

Our biggest obstacle to taking advantage of the situation in the Northern Coral Sea is that we are only just over three months into the war. We have no reserves to conduct an extended campaign.

We may have to dial it down for a bit after PM is secure and let the Japanese impale themselves on our defenses. We definitely cannot conduct any offensive operations. We have the supply and fuel, but not the airframes and devices to support it.

My take is that if we do not have the extended campaign there, it will be somewhere else. PM currently is a hard place for him to supply a big force and with the reinforcements and supply we have there, it will take a significant effort to dislodge it. We by no means can we go on the offensive in the northern Coral Sea, but we can counter attack and retire to attrit and delay the Japanese as opportunities present themselves. Operations in the northern Coral Sea will be a nogo once PM falls and opens the Japanese to come ashore in Northern Australia.

Also with the Japanese focus on PM, it slows down any potential push toward Luganville and Noumea. The bases we are building there will be much more secure when the invasion bonus expires.

Sydney is fine. Those P-39s will be very helpful at PM.

I am starting to farmout training squadrons to AFs around southern Australia for now. In the next 2-3 weeks I am getting a large tranche of BF/AV spt/Eng that were initially scheduled to arrive Darwin, now arriving Syndey. I plan to forward those to Northern Australia to build out bases there (may send 1 BF west/NW)

We have talked about moving the two Nevada and two Pennsylvania class BBs up from Tahiti. We are going to use them to bombard Port Moresby. Their bombardment effect should be 5-6 times more effective than our CAs.

We have four new AKEs (2x4200, 2x3900) coming out of conversion at Sydney in 8 days. We are going to move them to Townsend and rearm the BBs from there. We are thinking about either splitting them up with the CA bombardment groups we have now and rotating them in and out, one bombards, one reloads. There will be a day that they can't keep up the sequential bombardment, but 2 out of 3 days won't be good for the Japanese.

We think their 6/3 movement will give them enough to hit PM and get far enough away with carrier air cover to keep aircraft at bay. We also feel like they are a resource we can use now and keep reloading. The 16in/45 Mk5 BBs load cost is over 4200 so we can't use them until we have either larger AKEs or a larger port nearby.

Opinions?

Pete Townsend is a pretty awesome Rock Legend, but I doubt he could arm much more than a BB gun, certainly not a BB!

Look for the xAKs with 5250 cargo capacity - they convert to AEs large enough to arm 16"/45s [but not the Iowa class 16"/50s, IIRC].

Two are undergoing upgrades at Pearl right now and will be back in service in 30 days. I am thinking we need to move the other BBs, the Maryland and West Virginia to Pearl and start their upgrades also. Then when the Tennessee and Oklahoma are ready we can send them forward while the other two will be about half way done with their upgrades.

CLs can currently re-arm at Townsville, will CAs are having to return to Sydney at the moment. Once the proper AKEs are in place, or once the area is secure and Harvey is ready to upgrade the facilities at Townsville (Townsend

), then we can keep them at sea longer without having to go all the way back to Sydney.

Hornet is a couple three days away from being in position to cover Port Moresby with Lex and Yorktown. We're going to need to start rotating out USN CA/CLs that are due upgrades in April. Some are due in March, but we haven't upgraded them yet as theyre covering Port Moresby at present.

With Brisbane/Sydney/Melborne only having I think 50k shipyard off the top of my head, we'd have to pick carefully (Big E is in dock at Sydney for 45 days.. she's taking up majority of that) Some may have to either wait, or go back to Pearl.

Going to upgrade the ones that gain the most AA first, that have the smallest current amount of AA to begin with.

OK, I suggested the 5250 size xAKs for conversion because that was the largest ones I could find that would do so, and I remember having some AEs that could arm the 16"/45s, so I thought the 5250s were the ticket. But ... I did some checking to see if there was anything you could convert to load the 16"/50 Mk 7s. That's when I found that the 5250s end up with a load capacity of 4200, while the 16"/45 has a load factor of just over 4400 = no go.

I went through all the remaining xAKs I had and could not find anything bigger that would convert to AE nor AKE. There must be some AEs already in the system [I forgot to check] or coming as reinforcements that can do the job. BTW, the load factor for the 16"/50s is 5400.

If I recall, enough naval support in a minimal size port [size 5 or more?] can do the job, so you do not always have to send the Colorados back to Sydney or Pearl Harbour.

But ... I did some checking to see if there was anything you could convert to load the 16"/50 Mk 7s. That's when I found that the 5250s end up with a load capacity of 4200, while the 16"/45 has a load factor of just over 4400 = no go.
I went through all the remaining xAKs I had and could not find anything bigger that would convert to AE nor AKE. There must be some AEs already in the system [I forgot to check] or coming as reinforcements that can do the job. BTW, the load factor for the 16"/50s is 5400.

If I recall, enough naval support in a minimal size port [size 5 or more?] can do the job, so you do not always have to send the Colorados back to Sydney or Pearl Harbour.

Our problem with naval support is that it is March of 1942. We don't have any. So, the 16in/50 Mk 7s will just have to sit in port and refit for now. The 14" guns should do what we want.

Going to upgrade the ones that gain the most AA first, that have the smallest current amount of AA to begin with.

Don't forget the 15K drydock at Aukland!
And Columbo may be closer than PH.
Perth has a small 3K drydock that can handle a DD upgrade.

Forgot about Auckland, thanks for that. I know about Perth..that does work great for small craft. Colombo or even Capetown for that matter.

I tend to forget about Auckland in my AI games...so I forgot about it here.
