And the Japanese at PM are going to be in more bad shape after this unit moves into hex 92,130, just east of PM and then back to PM, shutting what little supply they are getting from Buna.

Unit:

Hexside details at PM:

The artillery duel is an even match, but we have supply and they do not have much along with the BB bombardments. More BBs are on the way, too...

BTW.. how did you post more than one picture in your post?

Did some more thinking, Mike. Id like to think I understand hexside control. If we control all of them, they cannot retreat. However, does this still relate to supply as well?

Thanks.

They can only pull supply from land via a red hexside, also.

You know they cannot simply go one hex east, right? The hex side is red, meaning the Japanese control it. The vector for the unit is SE so it must go down into the jungle/rough and then back up to the target hex. It will take between two and four weeks, in malaria infested jungle with no support. The enemy can block the move just by having one unit go east one hex. The raiders can still go into the hex, but unless they defeat the enemy they will not own the hex and block supply.

Is there any way you could para drop some troops on the hex instead?

Now that I look at it, I think you are right BBfanboy, but we need to have them do it and since they have no gun tubes they are not contributing to the existing conditions. We should have moved them out when the SNLF moved over the Stanley range from Buna. I saw it, but didn't think about what they were doing until it was over. So, the marines have to slog through the jungle to make it work...

If they still haven't reached it this turn, we can send in some transports to Port Moresby and paradrop them next turn..

Is a Raider unit able to do para-drops?

April 20th, 1942

More Japanese capital ships appear in the Coral Sea headed SW. I don't see any more transports that weren't there before. The ones there are headed NE anyways...could be wrong.

The enemy CV present is wounded..but there could be another one there that wasn't touched two turns ago by our dive bombers.

If Port Moresby is their target, we only have air assets to counter with. Our sea assets at Towsnville have retired to Brisbane for refit, leaving only two old BBs, a couple of CA/CLs, and a few DDs. They could turn around if this is an opportunity... (Harvey, feel free to turn them around if you see this as an opportunity)

Aus and Canberra are positioning themselves to be able to react to in invasion of Rennel Isl if the CV leaves the area. If not, they'll remain in the area on alert. Louisville is NW of Noumea headed that way with two escorts.

Finally secured three FGs between Noumea and Louganville. Sent one arine DB group to Louganville...they're Vindicators, though.

Curious to see what Harvey can brew up for the Japs. I like his surprises :)

23 APR 42 -

Sub action:
O23 finds a SCTF near Broome (2xCA, 2xCL, 4xDD) no damage to either side.
SS Dolphin is persecuted just off of Lae by SC Ch13, she took 7 hits.
RO-60 attacks the resource CS convoy out of Noumea and is driven off by the xAKL due to damage. Nothing specified, just “due to damage”.
RO-62 encounters the DDs escorting the cruisers around Ndeni (why are they still here? I ordered them to withdraw to Luganville under fighter cover!) The Sub takes two hits.
RO-62 takes 2 hits from DD Conyngham at Ndeni.

Surface action:
CL Hobart and DD Napier pick up xAK Kiyozumi Maru north of Sumatra. Shell hits and a torp hit.

Air action:
Zero sweeps of PM, nothing rises, they waste supply on nothing.
P40Es sweeps on Buna collect 2xZeros.
Air attacks on Bataan.
Airbase at Nanyang flattened.
B17s attack Buna delivering 1 disabled non-combat and 7 Airbase, 1 Airbase supply, and 7 Runway hits.
P39s attack a TF NE of Buna(twice), Zeros were on CAP. 3 P39s lost, no hits on a the xAK they were attacking.
Air attack on troops just East of Changsha, minimal casualties.
Eighteen Zeros and twenty Kates attack SCTF at Ndeni (again, I did order them to move to air cover!) DD Henley takes two Bomb hits and is on fire with heavy damage, CA Canberra takes four bomb hits and is on fire.
Vindicators from Luganville attack the CVTF that the Zeros and Kates came from. The Wildcat escorts did not go with them… Eighteen Zeros were waiting on them. Seven Vindicators were destroyed. The CAP aircraft came from Ryujo-1 (12 Zeros) and Kaga-1 (6 Zeros), and with the number of aircraft seen today (36 Zeros, 20 Kates), 56 total, is more than the Ryujo can carry (48 capacity +10% = 53). There might be another there like the Hosho (20 capacity) or they went with a penalty to get that many aircraft on her, which I doubt.

Land action:
Deliberate Attack at Battan, forts reduced to 2, at 1:2 odds. Defender bonuses are Forts, Terrain, and Leaders. Minuses are supply. Japan takes 4k casualties and the stalwart defenders of Bataan take just over 1k. We have a lot of squads disabled that won’t go back online due to supply and might as well be KIAs.
Deliberate Attack at Batavia, forts reduced to 2, at 2:1 odds. Defender bonuses are Forts, and Terrain. Minuses are experience. Japan takes 550 casualties and the Dutch take just over 1k in casualties, with 120 squads disabled and one unit destroyed. Allied bombardment attack does nothing to either side. Batavia holds, for now…
Bombardment Attack at PM yields more supplies expended by both sides with some permanent damage on the Aussies (3 squads).

28 APR 42

Munda is occupied by the Japs
Drum duds on a PB in Sea of Japan.
I-165 misses on the DD Witte de With and they wiff on her back.
S-47 is frustrated by LBs again off of Buna. At least they know one of our boats with good torps is lurking around Buna, hopefully it will keep the larger ships away.
I-29 is sighted by our ASW TF at Pago Pago and drove away.
Kittyhawks pick up 3 zeros for 2 destroyed at Buna.
181 bombers plaster Nanyang again. I think this is their next target in China.
B17s hit Buna for 8 base hits, 8 supply hits, 23 runway hits, and 1 port hit. These guys are doing great!
P400s hit the xAK Taigen Maru at Buna and sink her.
Blenheim IV escorted by Hurricanes and Fulmars do 3 port hits and 2 port supply hits on Akyab.
RO-60 is unsuccessfully prosecuted at Luganville.
RO-68 is hit six times by DD Monssen at Ndeni.
Bataan is bombarded. 5 squads disabled.
Madjene (65,103) is taken.
Good bombardment at PM, they take 51, we take 18.
Merak is taken.

CL + 4xDD bombard Ndeni for no results. The PTs had moved off one hex to rendezvous with the one left over from the other half of the squadron to the NE. They should be back on station tomorrow night. Fortuitous, as a CL+4xDD combo is bad news for PTs.

I-154 puts a torp into KV Nigella which sinks her. The other escorts hit I-154 one time. Not much of a trade…

Seal duds on one of the DDs that bombarded Ndeni. She shot four at her.

Swordfish duds on a PB near Kendari. It was in an ASW TF.

I-175 is prosecuted at Luganville twice for no damage.

45 zeros sweep PM in three waves, our fighters are patrolling. They lose eight, we lose 3xP39D, 2xP40B and 2xP40E

Nanyang airfield is plastered again by 158 Sallys and 45 fighters. 22 airbase, 18 supply, and 113 runway hits.

Tambor attacks a SC South of Rabaul for no effect.

Another Deliberate Attack at Bataan reducing the forts to 1.

Deliberate Attack one hex NE of Katha by a tank brigade on our retreating forces from Katha. No damage to the armor, one unit destroyed, one retreats.

Bombardment at PM yields good results.

SigInt of Note:

Nothing we don't already know.

30 APR 42 Report:

Sub Ops:

S-42 is sighted and unsuccessfully prosecuted near Munda.

I-168? Is sighted and very successfully prosecuted by the APD Manley at Pago Pago, underwater explosion, debris, and oil appear on surface. Knowing how these boats don’t take damage well, I would count it as a kill or at least a mission kill.

Another I boat or the same one as above is prosecuted by AM Vireo, but nothing done to the target. AM Grebe has another attack later in the day.

Dolphin is experiencing some flotation difficulty on patrol off of the north coast of NE New Guinea, need to check on her.

Late in the day, KVII takes three hits at Broome.

AM Air:

Kittyhawks kill two Zeros over Lae for no losses.

Sallys and Oscars attack Buitenzorg for some squads disabled in the BF there.

Scattered Allied forces attacks on Kalidjati, defended by Oscars for two destroyed aircraft and 7 damaged for one squad disabled and one Oscar destroyed.

B-17s follow up two sweeps at Lae and disable some squads in two raids. They also do 11 airbase, 4 airbase supply, and 33 runway hits. Nice combo going there Harvey! Keep it up as much as you can. The numbers on the B-17s have started going down and you may not be able to keep this pace up without a rest, but we are getting great results from it!

P400s attack shipping at Buna, one Zero rises to defend which downs one P-400, but the rest sink 8 LBs. Nice day for the P-400s!

PM Air:

Nanyang is bombed by Sallys giving 2 Airbase and 7 runway hits.

P-400s attack shipping near Lae, 5 Zeros defend, the P-400s lose one, but kill 2 Zeros and put a Bomb on an xAKL setting it a fire. Should be enough to sink her or at least put her out of the war for quite a while with no repair facilities nearby.

Ground Combat:

Nanyang is bombarded. They have 2056 AV vs. our 673 in forts. 77 casualties lost to the bombardment. Five brigades, two Divisions, four artillery units, 1st Army HQ, an Engineer unit, and one road construction are participating.

Buitenzorg is attacked and captured by overwhelming forces. All units are either destroyed or surrender.

Bombardment at Bataan yields small numbers for the Japanese.

Bombardment at PM hurts a little. We take 136 casualties for 53 for them. They must have supply open over the range. The unit we have moving into that hex will take care of that. Maybe we need to stop bombardments until then or we can get more BBs on target?

No SigInt of note.

1 MAY 1942

CONUS:

TF 372 is loading up 72850 in supplies for Sydney. Set to route through Pearl Harbor and refuel and around the point of Pago Pago to get to Sydney. Set for a CS convoy, so it should be automatic, every 60 days.

1st USMC EAB sent to San Francisco for deployment to SOPAC. (E68)

Stopped building Airfields at San Diego. They are at 7. Once the port is maxed out at 9, will move the engineers there to other inland bases to build Airfields there. I think we are going to need them!

Note: we are now producing 28 C-47s, 24 P38Es and 35 TBF-1s a month.

CANAL ZONE:

CLAA San Diego arrives at Balboa, set to SCTF and sent to Pago Pago to join up with forces as we see fit.

Other TFs are about loaded and will be heading out to various destinations in a day or two. More fuel and supplies to Pago Pago, mostly.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CENTPAC:

Nothing to do here.

SOPAC:

Formed up an ASWTF at Pago Pago with APDs with 6 ASW each. Left it there to prosecute any subs at Pago Pago. Make it very uncomfortable for the japs to be here.

Stockpiling the Mk6 mine which just started producing this turn. Going to make the mining of Pago Pago a high priority to also keep the subs away. We have the capability of placine a months worth of Mk6 production (35) in one day with the ships we have in port there (an ACM, and two DMs)

Sent two APDs as a Fast Transport Mission to pick up the A Det Port Svc unit on Penrhyn Island. These are valuable units. Will take it to Ndeni to help unload things there to build it up better.

Canberra is making good progress towards Pearl. She is 7-8 days out.

xAK TF near Tabiteuea, sending three of the DDs from Ndeni to check it out. With the unload bonus gone, it will take more than one day to unload anything, maybe they can catch them unloading and get some target practice in.

Splitting two DDs off of escort duty to join up with SCTF at Ndeni. It will take a couple of days to get there, but they will help make up for the three being sent to check out Tabiteuea.

ANZAC:

Formed up CLs Detroit and St. Louis along with DD Selfridge to join the SCTF at Ndeni to beef it up even more. Replacing the Detroit’s Captain with OD Waters, who is a better naval leader with better stats all around. Not the best, but much better! 5 PPs for that.

Can’t take CA Vincennes to readiness as she is getting an upgrade at the same time as repairs. She will come to portside in three days when the Nevada gets to Sydney and then when the upgrade time is done, she will go to Pearl to finish the repairs. Wish we could expand repair facilities like Japan can…

Harvey, CL Trenton and 2xDDs are ready at Melbourne. Do you need them on the West coast of Australia? If not, we can use more surface assets in the SOPAC as the Japanese are getting “frisky” there!

Pennsylvania will probably have to go back to Pearl also, but she doesn’t have any engine damage so should be able to make good speed.

CHINA:

AVG/1st Sqn transfers to Calcutta and is ready to take on replacements. They have 18 airframes and need 9 more which should take 10-11 days. Set to standard training regimen in the meantime.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

1 MAY 1942 report

Submarines:

S-47 is hit once by DC off of Buna.

DMS Hovey gets torps launched at it at Pago Pago, and prosecutes offending submarine. Both missed.

KXV is hit once by DC near Malacca.

Swordfish duds on some PBs off of Kendari.

Air Attacks:

Nanyang is again plastered by 180 bombers. Nearly 100 squads disabled. Some airfield hits.

Daily bombing attack on Bataan.

Akyab is hit again by B17s and Wellingtons for 4 airbase hits, 4 supply hits, 44 runway hits, and 1 port hit.

Lae is hit by B17s, doing 7 airbase hits, 4 supply hits, and 22 runway hits.

Ground Attacks:

Nanyang falls, not a surprise here, last place to defend outside of the woods. Had to make them pay in time and troops for it.

Bombardment at Bataan.

Bombardment at PM results in 80 Japanese vs. 31 Allied casualties.

Sorong falls.

SigInt of Note:

6501 men are based at Gifu (110,59). (They know enough to build up Gifu to boost their aircraft factory expansions)

CONUS:

Another YMS arrives in Stockton. Going to form it up with five others to start “Local Minesweeping” ASW patrols outside of San Francisco.

256th USAAF BF arrives at Santa Barbara, set it to expand Santa Barbara’s airfields.

AMC Monowai and AG Regulus are being escorted from San Diego to San Francisco for use out of there.

We have four F-4 air frames in a training unit in Spokane, but no other aircraft to “upgrade” the unit to so we can release those airframes for front line use. Will keep an eye on that, as the F-4s are going to be a rare commodity until they go into production in September.

CANAL ZONE:

Combined the fast tanker and AKs at Balboa, finishing up fuel load and then off to Pago Pago for deposit of 12k of supplies and fuel, then back to CONUS for use there.

NOPAC:

802nd EAB will be arriving in Dutch tomorrow. The TF that loaded it will go to Nome to get the 108th USN BF there and take it to Dutch also. Our airfield production rate has increased from 2% every three days to 2% a day. Another month and Dutch Harbor will have a level 1 airfield! Then, hopefully, the next couple of levels will go quicker. Once it gets to level 1, we need to move some of the engineers to Cold Bay and build it up to level 4 at least, if not level 5.

CENTPAC:

Nothing to do here.

SOPAC:

Dispatched two smaller xAPs to pick up the 135th BF at Penrhyn Island. It has no airfield and the Vs can be used elsewhere.

The DDs checking out Tabiteuea should be there tonight or tomorrow depending on how the commander approaches the island. Would be nice to catch some more cargo ships without escorts again! <evil grin>

Looking at what is gathering at Tulagi and the fact that Shortlands can hold torpedo bombers, but that we can get within seven hexes (SBD range) of Tulagi and stay outside of thirteen hexes from Tulagi gives me great hope for a nice raid by the Big E in about a week’s time.

ANZAC:

111th BF has docked at Brisbane and is unloading. There are some motorized support units for it about five days behind it. Harvey, not sure if you want to wait for the support units now or let them catch up to where you need your radar equipped unit. This is the one you asked for a game week back or so.

Looking at CL Leander (HMNZS), she has lost two of her LS 4in/45 QF MA Mk XVI guns. Looking at our pools of devices and production of devices it doesn’t look like we have any or will be getting any of these guns to replace the destroyed ones. Not sure what we are going to do. I guess let us let her get fixed and see what happens.

Routed the Trenton and her two DDs towards Ndeni.

The four other upgraded BBs will be arriving at Townsville tomorrow. Harvey, you can send the Pennsylvania and Arizona back with the two DMs escorting these BBs. I suggest back to Pearl Harbor as the Pennsylvania will need major work. The Arizona and the Pennsylvania can only be upgraded at Pearl Harbor, Sydney is too small.

CHINA:

Set HQs that were at Nanyang for other bases and moved them out of the woods to the rear away from where they are.

Moved 12th Corp from the retreat location to the rough terrain just NE of Nanyang. Hopefully they will make it there before the Japanese move into their hex and be a thorn in the side of them and force them to expend time and resources to dislodge them.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

Don't count on that Dutch Harbor airfield construction to go smoothly. It is real bear to build even after level one..

Yeah, I am beginning to see a trend... Also, looking at that rock after watching some Deadliest Catch episodes, I can see why!

4 MAY 1942

CONUS:

VP-61 arrives at Alameda, with just two aircraft it was only 6 PP to put it in an unrestricted HQ. Loaded up with 5A cats and shipped to San Francisco, where it will load up on a AKV for Pearl.

AM Oreole and xAK Alaskan sent to Seattle from San Francisco to provide some more cargo lift for the AAA and EAB units that will be going to Cold Bay to build up that base.

Moved a B-18A squadron to A-29s to free up some airframes for “upgrading” an observation squadron at Hilo to free up some other aircraft to free up the valuable R-4s stuck in a training squadron for use on the front lines in Australia…. Whew…

CANAL ZONE:

AK arrives, docked and started loading supplies.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CENTPAC:

VMF-223 arrives and is put on standard training regime. We need to think about sending the un-restricted VMF unit to SOPAC. Will be doing that in the near future.

SOPAC:

AO Pecos has 47 flt, only 31 of that is major. Sending her back to Pago Pago for temp repairs and then back to Pearl for full repair.

ANZAC:

Loaded AKE tenders at Townsville.

At Sydney the Vincennes is still under upgrade restrictions to move from Shipyard or Pier Side to readiness. Set her to normal and put the Perth in the shipyard to start on her. The Nevada will take 150+ days to fix here and we can just put her into pierside until the Vincennes is ready to leave and then send both of them to Pearl for repairs there. This should be quicker overall and get a ship back to the front line quicker.

CHINA:

Several units arrive in various places, either set to defend those places or moved on to the next location for them.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

3 MAY 42

Submarine Actions:

Pompano can’t fire on the LBs. PB escort does nothing.

AO Pecos is hit two more times by I-20 just east of Pago Pago, and sinks. Drat.

Trigger hits TB Manazuru and the only damage is to the laundry, large amounts of soiled underclothes…

Later on Trigger puts one in the side of xAK Kinkai Maur that actually explodes, setting her afire and doing heavy damage. That should be enough. Tigger takes one DC hit in return.

AM Vireo unsuccessfully prosecutes I-20. No Hits.

Air Phases:

Pingsiang is attacked by 150 bombers for 1100 casualties.

Bataan is attacked by 57 bombers for 50 casualties.

Lae is attacked by 24 B-17s for 2 Airbase, 10 Runway, 4 Port, and 2 Port Supply hits.

Our recon by force with the three DDs at Tabiteuea draws 6 Betties using bombs that all miss.

Our SCTF near Ndeni pulled back one hex towards Luganville for extra LRCAP that never shows, is attacked by 30 Zeros and 19 Vals, Australia takes two bomb hits.

Ground Combat:

Bombardment at Bataan for 120 allied casualties.

Bombardment at PM does 31 to them and we take 15.

SigInt of Note:

Nothing.

5 MAY 1942

CONUS:

Nothing to do here.

CANAL ZONE:

Nothing to do here.

NOPAC:

TF that dropped off the latest Engineer unit on Dutch is going to Nome to pick up another one for Cold Bay to start on a second base in Aleutians.

CENTPAC:

VMSB-233 arrives at Pearl, set to standard training regime for Naval attack first, then Airfield when the NavB gets to 70s.

VP-62 transfers to Christmas Island, next hop to Pago Pago to assist with ASW duties around this important port.

SOPAC:

Enterprise group, with paint still wet from repairs, under a good leader, forms up at Sydney, CAP set, DBs and TBs squadrons set, Search and ASW set for Kingfishers. Will be 200 miles east of Townsville in two days ready to cover Harvey’s movements into PM.

ANZAC:

1st Marine Raider is now between PM and Buna, there are two Japanese units there. No artillery with this unit, so it can’t bombard. Will wait and see what they do instead.

CHINA:

1st AVG will wait four more days and fill out with as many P40Es as are available at that time and start working back to China. Will bring 3rd AVG back at that time and it will sit until we have enough airframes to upgrade it.

Moving some reserve units to the south as this front is needing more support than the north.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

4 MAY 1942 report

Submarines:

I-25 attacks BB Tennessee and misses. One hit is delivered by the escorts.

I-20 is severely prosecuted by the APD ASW group at Pago Pago for 12 hits.

Pompano misses an xAKL at Buna with a torpedo and later attacks on the surface in daylight hitting once before running out of gun ammo.

xAKL Kaiping is attacked by I-9 with 8 shell hits and 2 torpedoes and sinks. xAKL Surigao is also attacked for 9 shell hits and sinks.

Trusty is attacked south of Rangoon by an ASW TF for no damage.

DDs at Tabiteuea are bombed again by Betties and Nells, twice, for no damage. Could have sworn I told these guys to leave.

Bataan is bombed by 57 bombers for 22 casualties.

Buna is bombed by B-17s, twice. Once without escorts, once with. One Zero is defending each time and does nothing to the bombers, but picks up one P40E escort. The B-17s do 23 casulties, 7 Airbase, 3 Supply, and 41 Runway hits.

Three xAKLs are attacked NE of Buna by P-400s and Dauntlesses. Zeros are defending. One P-400 is destroyed. Three Zeros are destroyed and one xAKL takes two 1000 lb bombs and sinks rapidly.

WTF? I pulled the SCTF back from near Ndeni… They didn’t move and are hit again for 2 bomb hits on Ralph Talbot and one on Detroit.

P-400s attack shipping at Buna, putting a bomb on the PB Ginyo Maru.

Ground Attacks:

Ground attack in the open on the 100th Chinese Corp. It takes heavy losses.

Bombardment at Bataan for 54 casualties.

Our Bombardment at PM does 51 casualties for 24 of ours.

Summary of what is on the water en-route to Sydney:

Supply: 364,130
Fuel: 196,825

Also, here is an analysis of what is being delivered to Sydney every 60 days:

For those reading, is this enough? Harvey, how much per the same time period are you getting to Perth? As it takes most TFs to make the trip every 60 days or just 6 times a year, making sure this is enough is important months if not years ahead of time!

I am delivering a fair amount to Perth(125k supply enroute along with 180k of fuel, 24 k of supply currently unloading). More importantly I am working on a stash of supply at Capetown for use in Australia or the CBI. (~750k now).

Sydney has 1.3M supply without stockpiling, with maybe 200k fuel. Australia ain't hurting.

I haven't been able to get tracker working right on my new computer, so cannot be specific without asking for you assistance.

quote:

ORIGINAL: nashvillen

Summary of what is on the water en-route to Sydney:

Supply: 364,130
Fuel: 196,825

Also, here is an analysis of what is being delivered to Sydney every 60 days:

For those reading, is this enough? Harvey, how much per the same time period are you getting to Perth? As it takes most TFs to make the trip every 60 days or just 6 times a year, making sure this is enough is important months if not years ahead of time!
