Home Islands west.
Attack at Matsue tomorrow to finally clear this end of the Sea of Japan coastal rail line. The infantry division and two artillery units are a day behind, but enough armor is in place to swamp the 3,000 defenders, or so I hope. 2x CL will bombard and air strikes will assist.

In spite of Reserve mode our infantry units just want some days without shells flying over their heads. Although knackered, tomorrow all units will attack, except for the infantry and armor which attacked today. After that we might have to rotate out a few divisions at a time to Hachinohe to recover. Fortifications now at level 0 might help the air strikes and bombardment just enough to make the difference.

Our troops are recovering slowly with the artillery bombardments underway, but I want their engineers helping to repair the base and they will not do that in Rest or Reserve mode. A swarm of engineering units will arrive tomorrow from Hachinohe to get the base functioning. The first convoy arrives tomorrow bringing supplies from North America. Our artillery bombardment today was very destructive so I look forward to rapid disintigration of the hold outs when ground assaults resume.

The B-29's did not fly against Maizuru, possibly due to weather. The balance had already been tipped and the base fell to us with room to spare. Significantly, all enemy units at Maizuru are holding on and have significant strength. Our troops are in far better shape than after the prior assaults but will rest anyway to be in shape to deal with the strong resistance. A number of construction units are railing in from Nagasaki/Sasebo.

The B-24's did not flay against Iwaki, either. There are now 436 Imperial fighters reported at Tokyo which did not respond to sweeps today. At some point they might spring a trap, but hopefully not tomorrow. Tomorrow all the B-29's and B-24's will strike Tokyo's airfields.

No. Niigata is size 9 and is the one I shut down with naval bombardment plus 4EB strike a week or two back.

Home Islands west.
Ground assaults tomorrow at Hiroshima/Kure and Kobe. Many air groups that have been resting will aid the Hiroshima/Kure assault, as will all the fleet carrier strike aircraft. The B-29's and B-24's will support at Kobe, as will those already assigned.

Ground assaults at Yamagata and Maizuru tomorrow. There are almost 1,500 AV at Osaka/Kyoto now and almost 4,200 more will have arrived in about 5 days.

The strikes on Tokyo's airfields were crushing. The Empire lost 589 aircraft on the day, 578 on the ground at Tokyo versus 33 for the Allies across the map lost to all causes.

Newspapers in that capital are screaming that but for a lack of aviation fuel a massive CAP would have wiped out the Allies air raiders. Rumors are spreading of a coup planned for August 1st...

Mindful of the turmoil that would follow a coup, the Emperor has ordered the Empire's resistance to cease.

Congratulations are in order for both you and Andav! Not many games (at least where there are aars) last as long as your's did. While I would have loved to see an allied flag on the Tokyo hex, I can't fault Andav for suing for peace. Besides, you still did better than the allies did IRL! Kinda scary for me to think this aar started when I was still in high school.

Don't worry, I'm still 17 - on the inside!

There is just no supply in the Empire's hands on Honshu. The remaining Imperial positions are not so much resisting as much as getting destroyed without surrendering, if you get my drift.

Walter reports that some air groups are flying biplanes simply because there is no supply to upgrade to newer aircraft. Which seems not to matter because almost no aircraft on Honshu fly due to lack of supply. Those >>400 fighters at Tokyo were apparently CAP, but almost none had AvGas (supply) to fly. Without supply ground units cannot get replacement devices or (I think) repair disabled ones, and recovery of units in other ways is minimal.

Yeah his position seemed beyond impossible. Kudos to him for sticking it out as long as he did. Too bad we didn't see the Russians, but that's just because your own offensive was so awesomely good.

Congrats and many thanks to you both for what keeping a great and interesting game going for more than 5 years!

@ WITPQS: Thanks for writing a great AAR
@ Andav: Kusdos to showing real BANZAI spirit and keeping on after the "auto victory screen"

It seemed from the outside you two were evenly matched in terms skill and play style.

Nooooooooo! I wanted to see the conquest of Tokyo

Congratulations to both you and Andav. This was an extremely entertaining AAR to follow, and it also went on beyond the normal, point victory end. A masterpiece. Special thanks to Andav for his resilience in the face of crushing opposition!

Now, I do hope you will make another AAR. Hey, I'm being honest here

Amazing Game!!! Kudos to you both for carrying it on so long, and giving other players such a great insight to the late game we seldom see!

The AAR will be a guide for many of us for a long time. Your work here is much appreciated! If I get another Allied game going in future this will be my go-to for advice.

Hope you raise a glass of your favourite beverage, or several, and celebrate the victory!

It really was a pleasure playing this game with witpqs. As an opponent, he is great. I will post some screen shots of the end of Japan on Friday when I have a little bit of time.

The biggest issue in the end (setting aside the entire Allied Army, Navy and Air Force) was supply. There was basically none in the Home Islands. Without supply, you can't do anything. I still had plenty of HI banked. Resources where never an issue. Fuel basically dried up in early 1944 with the invasions of Borneo and CRB. The Borneo/CRB operation and the Pegu landings really demonstrates how good a player witpqs is. He took advantage of openings I left and made me pay. If the army that died in Burma was able to fall back, things would have been different. Instead he masterfully trapped that army and hastened victory. There is a reason he was able to achieve auto victory and continue to pile on the points.

It was a great 5+ year run. I really could not have asked for a better opponent. I will miss this game being a part of my daily life.
