CA Quincy and her escort made 0 progress toward Iwo Jima and are still staring at Chichi Jima. She is no worse off but no better off. The enemy sub is still there, however. Over in the South China Sea things got exciting. Both surface combat TF ordered to patrol at Jesselton reacted toward a small - possibly ASW - TF that was beating the waters ahead of the KB. meanwhile, the KB had run a little faster past their pathfinder to the north. The cruisers did not catch their quarry. LBA and KB aircraft did find them, and the KB also struck at the convoy at Jesselton, but all that had to wait until the morning storms lifted. A small group of Avengers with stout escort also found the KB. quote:

Raid is overhead -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- xAP Dalgoma can only make 4 knots and has put into Jesselton for temporary repairs. DD The Sullivans has about 50% flotation damage and will head for that same port to pump out. We got lucky, and newspapers smuggled out of the Empire lament that prior to this day "KB pilots are long gone". The combat replay showed that although the Zeros were torn asunder, they stayed with their wards to the targets at Jesselton. Our carriers will take a position about 3 hexes north of Balabac, with some TFs straggling. That position is 10 hexes from the nearly 150 fighters at Cam Ranh Bay: what is their range, are they kamikazes, will the IJN carriers continue heading closer to Cam Ranh Bay? A group of P-38J has been moved into Jesselton to bolster the P-47D2 groups there, but they suffered no casualties today. Regional forecast for tomorrow is overcast. There is one more unit at Cam Ranh Bay (3) but only a few hundred more troops. Some of the major combat units for that operation which just repositioned for final have now made the transition to combat mode and will load tomorrow and the next day as transport arrives at their locations. Two divisions are ordered to load tomorrow, along with another armoured unit, and convoys will shove off for the passage each as soon as it is ready. The carriers and surface elements will remain on station in the South China Sea, and the slow BB bombardment groups will refuel at sea and just keep going, getting whatever head start they can. Nine USN CVL have finished upgrades at Pearl Harbor and are leaving for Manado. They will obviously miss the opening action but they will be required to sustain our presence in the passage between the Sulu Sea and Cam Ranh Bay. The B-29 groups have begun transferring from Celebes to the Marianas. KB position is highlighted. What will they do tomorrow?
