Looking at the big map of Burma, it seems he is not retreating very much, does he have plans of sending everything back to Singers?

Give some thought to cutting that Singers railroad I think.

Great play.

Now he is pulling everything out of northern Thailand. He already was pulling back, but I think that some units were staying put to keep the door open for other units behind them. The stack that was near Toungoo is still ~82,000 strong and has to get to Chiang Mai before railing out. With this past turn my troops are closing in on Rahaeng and while that doesn't cut the rail by itself Rahaeng is on the edge of it.

After the two divisions capture Tavoy they will head across country to do just that. Another division - preparing for Sinabang, IIRC - will strat move into Tavoy to anchor the defense and guard their flank. No matter what, it will be a while before I can have guys on that rail line unless they land by sea (but I'm not prepared for that at the moment). One possibility is that if I cut the roads to the north and east but resistance proves strong at Bangkok, a landing on the rail line would make a second LOC cut.

Status: offline 		Have been lurking for quite some time and I must say your AAR is extremely entertaining and highly educational. The layout and the amount of detail are just perfect. So good in fact, that I wish the game pace was a bit higher - “I want more!”.

Thanks! Stupid RL just has the game slow right now. Either it'll pick up at some point or keep moving slow!

Those tankers were in a coastal hex at or near Djambi, which is really close to Palembang. I'm sure they were either going to or coming from Singapore, which has heavy industry (and IIRC refineries too).

I really don't have a clue about his success in using the land route, but I am assuming it works and so I must block it!

At some point when I get bases in range for the B-24 swarms I will target the industries at Singapore to stop that supply generation.

The air strikes on the Emperor's troops withdrawing toward Chiang Mai are causing a couple of thousand casualties per day with many dozens of squads disabled. Well worth hitting them instead of the hold-outs at Rangoon. The trapped division near Prome was hit by a river-crossing shock attack and their AA unit in tow was destroyed. While today's attackers need to rest, a motorized Bde also arrived from the opposite direction without attacking and will do so tomorrow. They will be aided by another Bde crossing the river through today's attacking unit.

The unit farther to the west that made a vain attempt to open a retreat route has been identified by air strike as the 17th Ind.Mixed Brigade. What would we do without aircraft attacking at treetop level so that a crew member could use 24x binoculars to read shoulder patches? The 2/6th Armoured Rgt will attack them tomorrow. Even though likely to be ineffective, it's important to stress all units heading into Saigon. Interestingly, recon shows one or more units heading from Saigon toward Bien Hoa. Either defenses to the north are being bolstered or DAW HQ thinks we are bringing few enough forces to the party that they can be outmaneuvered.

Armor for the Soc Trang invasion will arrive near Cam Ranh bay tomorrow. The assault division is at sea and will enter the South China Sea in about 2 days. The additional division and Bde are beginning to load at Jesselton and Kudat.

In a surprise change, Oscars (clearly kamikaze) attacked a (returning, empty) convoy in the Sulu Sea. Previously no ships that far from Manila had been attacked, but we've still been careful with fighter cover and with naval search to make certain no raiders sneak in. Light Industry hits at Soerabaja seemed hard to come by today, but recon shows LI 18(23). The LI strikes will continue. I did some checking, and Quinhon is 16 hexes from Hong Kong, normal range for the B-24. We have more and more support troops loading up for CRB and environs.

Heavy IJN surface units have sortied from Singapore. The carriers appear to still be in port there.

It looks like you have the carriers stuck in Singapore. Is there any route he could try to move around or do you perhaps forsee a straight run for the home islands? I would think he would want those carriers closer to home to react in defence as well as for access to the repair ports.

Seems like you are progressing along. A question for you. Since you have Cam Ranh already, why not jump ahead to Samah/Hong Kong and start the march towards Japan? Do you want the VP? Removing Saigon as a supply source?

Nah, I think he has the Emperor bamboozled by the fact that the Empire still leads on points! There are 6 Allied ground attacks ordered for this turn. not much chance of things turning quiet!

I agree that he must want the carriers up north. I think I just got lucky with the timing. I pulled the trigger on Cam Ranh Bay before I was fully ready because I came to think he had figured it out (he told me he hadn't). If I had waited, then maybe the IJN would not have opposed the Pegu invasion so hotly, and therefore maybe the carriers and so many more surface combat ships would have been available to oppose at CRB or at least move through to the north.

Now, I think I have them blocked out. But for the time being that depends on massive carrier strength being in place. I need to get some ammo ships to CRB for rearming. I've just topped off all the carriers and battleships and their escorts from a large fleet oiler TF.

The only other route would be to the east, and even though he could make a dash there are lots of Allied air groups there to put hurt on them, plus some surface ships. There would also be plenty of time for Allied carriers and surface forces from the South China Sea to react and catch them. No, I think they are blocked for now.

Howdy! Welcome back!

It's mostly a matter of how many forces available and where to allocate them. I already have most (by far most) of SWPac's ground combat power on or heading onto the continent. I figure it is important to cut the supply, etc land routes and the troop movement routes. If I just head north that will not happen and whatever enemy units can will be at my back. To do both, I would have to bring in a bunch of SoPac/PacAO forces. As I already have 3 divisions from SoPac/PacAO operating with the SEAC forces now breaking out of Burma, that would leave too little to take Okinawa and surrounding environs. if I can cut the route between Singapore and Bangkok, plus cut the route into China, that will allow for the destruction of the massive Imperial forces now in Burma/Thailand. With them destroyed, I will no longer have to allocate forces to oppose them or watch them. And the more he puts into that (soon to be formed) pocket from the Singapore area, the easier operations will be down there. plus I will be able to move on occupied China with full force, danger from the rear.

Getting the Okinawa region will allow a major escalation of the strategic bombing campaign, which is really in its infancy right now. Only one raid has been conducted on the home islands and these early model B-29 can only reach there at extended range. I want to add the B-24 fleet and maybe even base this model B-29 closer for better impact.

I can't launch the Okinawa campaign until the base network astride the South China Sea is built up enough to fully protect itself and, to the extent possible, oppose transit of IJN major units. I want to free up the USN carrier fleet while still keeping the IJN carriers bottled up, or at least charging them a major toll for passage!

BTW, in one more turn a bunch of additional infantry will be in Rangoon. All will then attack to reduce that pocket. the forces then freed up will mostly strategic move to Tavoy and head through the jungle to cut Bangkok from Singapore and start a general assault on Bangkok Aiyuthia from that side. Will they get there before the >80k troops still clawing their way through the jungle to reach the rail head at Chiang Mai?

Since I am a newbie, I have to ask. I noticed that you can build the airfield at Okinawa just to level 8. Will that mean you will incur in heavy operational losses when using 4Es (and specifically B29s) to bombard from there?

Also, if I remember correctly you said near the beginning that you were not playing for points. So I suppose you're going to try strat bombing as a way to stop the Japanese industry, right?

Don't have time to look up the formula right now, but check in the manual for this: the size of the airfield 'needed' is a formula based on the maximum load of the aircraft. That's given in the lower left area of the aircraft display. When you get beyond the size needed you avoid having the aircraft use extended range loads even for missions at normal range. I'm not sure if that formula per se affects ops losses, but as you say airfield size certainly does. The bigger the airfield the less likely are ops losses. So, yes, 9 would be better than 8, but 8 will not be horrible. Have a look at the max size of the airfields in this mod (DBB 28-C) in the Marianas. None of them can make size 9!

Also, if I remember correctly you said near the beginning that you were not playing for points. So I suppose you're going to try strat bombing as a way to stop the Japanese industry, right?
When I say not playing for points, I mean that in the strict sense that many players use. I feel that because of the massive play-testing effort that would be required (far beyond even the huge number of hours they did put in) to actually play into the late game and see the flow of things, I figure that the points just can't be calibrated to very fine degree. So in my view the victory lines are pretty blurry when viewed in terms of points. Is the difference between ratios of 19. to 1 and 2.1 to 1 really enough to trigger a different victory level? That's what I mean. Points are a useful indicator, for certain. The other thing that I mean by that is that I am in it for the journey - this game is just way fun. If I was getting my butt kicked to the moon and back I would be finding ways to fight back!

So, yes, strat bombing Home Islands' industry is definite. That does translate into points, too, of course.

There is one infantry unit that came up a mile short of getting to Rangoon, so the rest of the army will start without them. The two victorious divisions at Tavoy are immediately heading cross country to the east to gain the road to Bangkok behind the forward defenses (on the road to Moulmein). Their assignment is to cut off those units from the road if possible, and to move along the road past Bangkok and cut the road to Singapore. By the time they are ready to move in the open the mass of support troops now ordered to move to Tavoy should have that airfield open to support them.

Two armored units and an artillery unit have caught the Imperials retreating to Saigon from Dalat and will attack tomorrow.

It looks like D-Day at Soc Trang will be in 4 days. The weather at Nagoya tomorrow is thunderstorms, down from constant rain, so the next Manpower City attack is ordered with 93x B-29 currently ready. A P-38 group from Iwo Jima will sweep Hamamatsu (which is as far as they can reach).

There are IJN carriers at sea, but it's unclear how many. There is one TF just east of Singapore and another at Singapore, but I don't trust the scouting to be solid. Maybe the Soc Trang invasion will be contested? There is a small convoy at Kompong Trach and a larger one SE Kota Bharu/NE Kuantan moving NE, and one carrier group (2x TF of 3x CV each plus 2x TF with fast BB escort will move to a position just SE of Soc Trang to hit them. Rain is forecast for tomorrow so things will be very uncertain!

Status: offline 		I haven't read through the entire AAR. How is his carrier situation? Looking at that line of ships moving towards Vietnam, not to mention the line of subs in between, that's going to be difficult to make headway against. He could try to hit more to the south of that line, but I'm counting at least 5 allied CV groups and I'm betting on some significant land based aircraft in Cam Ranh. Yikes!

The P-38 sweep of Hamamatsu blasted a group of Zeros and at least provided that much help to the bombers flying on to Nagoya. I anticipated that Nagoya would have LRCAP beyond local CAP and that seemed to be the case. Our first B-29 groups (looked like two full groups of 14 planes) took it on the chin, losing all of their ships even though hitting the target. They lost all their planes but more than half the crews were recovered. Following groups benefitted from their sacrifice and hit the target much harder. 19x B-29-1 were lost on the day.

IIRC those subs have put torps into two carriers since the Cam Ranh Bay op commenced!

He hasn't lost terribly many carriers, but I've been very, very lucky. Tracker counts CV Akagi, Hiryu, and Soryu; CVL Ryujo, Shoho, and Zuiho; CVE Chuyo, Hosho, and Taiyo plus CVE Chenango and Petrof Bay for me. But just before the Cam Ranh Bay operation was the Pegu/Moulmein operation, where the IJN reacted with near full force and failed to break through the RN and Allies. Surface ships suffered most (on both sides), but some shells were landed on IJN carriers. Nothing major, but every little bit helps. The B-29 horde then hit the repair yard at Singapore before the could get there for repairs. That yard has been repaired a few points, no doubt enough to take in ships of a certain size. So in addition to the positioning of the forces and the presence of a massive portion of the USN fleet, the IJN was depleted of stores and damaged while CRB was being invaded. Now they are in a situation where possibly some damage to the largest combatants has not been repaired.

CRB does not have much anti-shipping air in place just yet. Some P-47, a little recon, and a bunch of ground attack assets (that can double up to go against against ships). Jesselton does, and of course the carriers do.

The Empire also bombed our two divisions moving east from Tavoy, putting one of them out of move mode. They lost only 1 mile and now the first dedicated AA unit is on line at Tavoy. Our forces have caught up to the defenders 1 hex west of Rahaeng in Jungle-Rough terrain. Not sure if any of the defenders were previously retreated of if those units moved through the lines of fresh defenders already in place. Some of our smaller units and another armored unit need another day to arrive, but our first attack is tomorrow anyway. We also have two more divisions just beyond Moulmein rushing to this battle. The 7th Australian Division fresh out of China is entraining at Lashio and will move to the Rahaeng area will all due speed once they reach Moulmein.

The staff didn't reset the armour to attack at Quinhon so the Empire got a day of respite there. Electrons have rolled! A tank destroyer Bn has arrived at CRB and is heading out to Pakse. A tank Bn begins unloading tonight and will head the same way tomorrow. The force that is now across the river from Saigon is marching in Follow mode to cross the river together. The Soc Trang invasion force is heading to the jump off point 1 hex SE of the target and will land the following day. The support troops and follow on forces are beginning the move across the South China Sea. Because of the lack of fighter opposition over Saigon now, one P-47 group has been stood down in favor of another B-25 group activating to support tomorrow's attack at Quinhon. It looks like the three Bdes are about 5 days out from Quinhon.

It looks like the IJN carriers are back at Singapore so at least this approach turn to Soc Trang should be uneventful.

A few more Light Industry hits at Soerabaja but the silly things must be camouflaged.

Here is Nagoya. Fires are almost out, but with recon back on line we can see some effects from the recent raid.

From air strikes and recon it looks like the first of the units from that stack moving toward Chiang Mai has made it to the road just west of Chiang Mai. It will be a close run thing whether or not our forces advancing on Rahaeng can cut the rail lines in that vicinity before those units can rail through to Bangkok.

To the south the Empire is sweeping Tavoy with Tojos and Franks then bombing with Bettys to slow our divisions heading east. A number of support units arrived today by strategic road movement and are regrouping to begin operations and get the airfield repaired. The AA unit that arrived by (standard) road movement shot down some Bettys and roughed up the rest. Some fighter squadrons will move in now (runway damage 69%, service damage 11%) but others will wait until the runway is in better shape. Moving in now are two groups of P-40N5, one group of Spitfire Vc, one group of Corsair 1A, and two groups of (Chinese) P-43A-1 Lancer. All are set to range 0 and their altitudes split to foil high sweeps.

Thunderbolt I production began in May, and enough have accumulated (rate of 40/month) to upgrade several British fighter squadrons. Likewise, enough additional British Spitfire VIII accumulated to upgrade more squadrons to that model.

With the first day of recon today, Soc Trang appears undefended. Two CVE TF (>380 aircraft) will cover Soc Trang while the other two remain at Cam Ranh Bay. The four old BB bombardment groups will probably not be needed but will stay with the carriers until tomorrow. Fleet and light carriers are moving around to cover forces in transit for Soc Trang and maintain coverage of the CRB SLOC. The fleet carriers 1 hex SE of Soc Trang will remain there.

A little more damage noted at Nagoya. A new B-29 group arrived at the East Coast today, this one 10 planes strong.

The situation on the fronts in Burma, Thailand, and Indochina.

Thanks! Much depends on how the river crossing into Rahaeng fares. BTW, a couple of posts back I noted 2 divisions rushing to join that stack, but it's 1 division and 1 brigade. That Australian division of course of is farther behind (entraining at Lashio).

Pisanoluke looks weakly held, with more force at Utteradit. If Rahaeng falls quickly, Pisanoluke can probably be grabbed right after. Getting Utteradit would be great to keep that large stack from railing south at all.
