1944 August 22 The Empire captured: The Allies captured: Prachuap Khiri Khan There were Imperial amphibious or airborne operations at: There were Allied amphibious or airborne operations at: Kuching Imperial Naval Bombardments Allied Naval Bombardments: Allied Ships Bombarding Ulithi Allied Ships Bombarding Ulithi Allied Ships Bombarding Ternate Allied Ships Bombarding Dili Allied Ships Bombarding Samah Our subs are in position and fighting ASW forces north of Okinawa. They also provided early warning about an approaching surface force NW of Borneo. Prachuap Khiri Khan is captured and now the reduction of the remaining defenders commences. quote:

The B-29 mission against Chungking was scrubbed by weather. The recon base & flight tasked for Chungking is having supply issues so a flight has been moved to another base to pick up recon tomorrow. We do now have knowledge of some aircraft based at Chungking, which points to fighters, because Neikiang is closer to the front and bombers are seen there. So a change of plans. After looking around, the best target at the moment is either the HI or port at Singapore. Tomorrow 104 ready B-29 plus any last minute additions will fly extended range (29 hexes) to strike the port areas of Singapore. A P-38 group (the only type with the range) has been transferred to Soc Trang to sweep (hopefully) ahead of the bombers. Only 18 fighters have been identified there by recon. The surprise naval bombardment of Samah was very successful. quote:

Instead it has 1 mile to go so will arrive tomorrow and, if 2 squadrons of P-51 LRCAP can keep enemy aircraft away, so will the other division which now has only 3 miles to go. The armor on the road NW of Vinh was left un-bothered and all three units have only 6 miles to go. The reaction to discovery of the divisions' identities - the USA 31st Infantry Division and the Australian 5th Division - has been immediate. The troops NW of Vinh still show a movement arrow into Vinh and Vinh still shows a reciprocal movement arrow toward that hex, but Vinh also shows a movement arrow to the NE along the (fast) primary road that will allow units to escape if they move soon enough. Just how many units are moving is a mystery. With the heavy air strikes they certainly will move more slowly, and we seek to slow them down further still. All units currently at Vinh will attack tomorrow (see below). Our forces are outnumbered and outgunned in terms of AV but they have advantages: heavy air strikes, CAP, over 200 tanks, good supply, favorable morale and fatigue status, and some or many or all of the defenders are moving thus giving up some defensive advantages. Attacking now entails more risk and almost certainly more casualties, but might just slow down the Imperials enough to trap and destroy them. This day belonged to the Empire in the waters near Kuching. quote:

We will lose at least one APA (95 fires!) and the danger has not passed. There was extreme overcast protecting the Emperor's warriors all day long - hundreds of strike aircraft circled but the best that could be achieved were possibly some chance hits by search planes. Our carriers will pull back a bit, the CL TF is arriving as is a large DD TF, and CVE and CVL TFs arriving near Groot Natoena will pull eastward a bit as well. Dili is as stubborn as ever. quote:

Those 4EB will now hit Soerabaja's port complex to destroy about 4 tankers sheltering or repairing there. The Ulithi invasion convoy is nearing Babeldaob, where it will unload to rest the troops before setting out for the target. But the garrison at Ulithi is fading fast according to recon and might not be there to receive the invasion. There were two Betty raids against a troop convoy just arriving at Iwo Jima, which contains SoPac HQ. When SoPac loaded up from Rota that dropped air base group capacity 18 hexes away, including at Iwo Jima. As a result CAP might have been a bit light but it was surprising to see the fragile planes flying straight into - and through - the teeth of a P-47 CAP. No hits were suffered but many aircraft made attack runs! See today's air losses below. Those squadrons are a tough bunch of survivors. Indochina.
