I received the game for Christmas. I played a couple of games with the base package and decided to buy the expansions. After a few games I have some question.

1. Is there some way to help the colonies grow? In one of my games after about 50 years I had 10 colonies. A number of the colonies had been settled early in the game. The total population of my home planet was 16 billion. The total population of the colonies was 500 million. At this rate it would take hundreds of years to make the colonies viable.

2. How do you take an enemy's home world? After a prolonged war I had taken all the ememy's planets except his home world. I collected all my remaining troops and dropped them on his home world. I had 7 transports with 5 troops each, I barely out numbered his troops. However he had a huge number of militia that added to the forces. To overcome the troops I probably needed at least twice what I had. To overcome the troops and militia I would have needed 5 - 10 times what I had. That would have been 175 - 350 troops. Is that normal?

3. What is a good set of victory conditions? I have been using a combination of economy, population, and territory. The economy and territory are no problem, but I have not been able to achieve much in population.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

1) Set taxes manually to 0%. Also researching appropriate tech boosts the pop growth rate for some planets.  Example: Volcanic colonization will boost growth on Desert planets.

2) Yes, sometimes I attack with 300 troops.  You can of course bomb the planet to hell and kill all the troops... and population.

3) I play sandbox and decide when I had enough :)

Welcome to the game and forum!

1. Colony Govenors often have a skill in increasing population growth, so allocate them to colonies you want to expand. Also look at the designs of your passenger ships and ensure thay have a good lift capacity as they will carry immigrants. Consider your polcies on other races as well - if you allow them in then the colony will grow faster of course. But colonies do take a long time to grow.

2. You need very good odds to take a homeworld as they are usually well defended, and allow for differences in troop quality as well - Securan infantry are not as strong as Boskarans for example. Taking a homeworld is very difficult early in a game as your opponent will usually have a similar number of troops to you.

3. Once the victory conditions have been achieved you have the option to continue playing anyway, so in a way they're almost irrelevant. I enjoy the race victory conditions as they give much more scope for fun than simply invading everything in sight.

What are the other options if you can't take their homeworld? Bombard? Blockade forever? Force them to accept peace with you?

I don't use Bombardment very often as it doesn't fit the races I play and my own style. I often skirmish with opposing empires to weaken them while slowly building up my own troop strength to the point I can invade. Colonise where you can and recruit troops there, take minor worlds to gain experience for your own troops, destroy your opponent's mines and space stations to reduce the resources they can use, etc.

This can take several years, so if you're after quicker results then bombardment may be your best option. But remember that a world you have bombarded may take some time before it is back to full potential (i.e. paying you lots of taxes).

Bombard them down to 20million population.  That normally takes care of the troops and leaders.  Invade with 5 troops.  Then, cry because all that GDP is gone :(

If you dont know, Troops can be trained to raise their strenght.
Before you takeover the Homeplanet, go and caputre all the other colonies. Gather first enough troops at first and use them all to invade these Colonies, at Legends dont forget to assign the Troop generals.

At this way you train your ground forces, and you are ready to takeover the homeworld.
