Let's go straight to the action, shall we...

Invasion of Java

DD Urakaza that ate a mine at Batavia is unbelievably lucky when the damaged destroyer sees four Dutch sub-launched torpedoes miss her. A US sub continues snooping around our invasion task force at Kalidjati, three DC hits are claimed.

Speaking of Kalidjati, my second wave comes ashore in good order. Kalidjati is captured later; I have 668 AV present and over 20,000 supplies. The facilities are undamaged, third wave will include some aviation support. The elite 5th Division will now advance on Batavia.

The expected reprisals arrive during daytime in the form of the Dutch air force; this time they are escorted by fighters (at least later in the afternoon). A first wave of three Dutch level bombers is eaten for breakfast by the Zeroes; a second larger strike in the afternoon of 21 level bombers is also massacred. A further strike of eight stringbags escorted by 22 Dutch fighters appears to do better, but none get through.

The Zero jocks LRCAP'ing Kalidjati claim thirty 139WH-1s, six Swordfish Is and two B-339Ds for the loss of three Zeroes.

Now here's where it gets interesting. As you'll see in the image below, naval search has picked up a 9-ship task force just off the west coast of Java that contains a CVL (18 fighters, 16 bombers) and two CAs; I can only imagine that it must be British. The last Allied (US) carrier was spotted near Noumea quite a while ago; they definitely did not transit the Torres Strait and it's way too long for them to have come the long way round. The only Allied CVL at this stage is HMS Hermes but she only carries 20 aircraft; she starts with a Swordfish squadron, I believe - so why the fighters?

The other British carrier my opponent will have available by now is CV Indomitable, which arrived at Aden in mid-January. This carrier has a 45-aircraft capacity and should in theory be carrying 9 Sea Hurricanes, 12 Fulmars and 12 Albacores - or 21 fighters and 12 torpedo bombers. This leads me to believe it's HMS Indomitable sitting parked off Java, but what it's doing there I have no idea, it did not participate in attacks on my invasion convoys at Kalidjati; if it did, it would likely have suffered heavy losses from the Zeroes LRCAP for very little reward, maybe bagging a few transports.

As the image shows, I have over a hundred Zeroes at Oosthaven and almost 99 Betties and Nells at Singkawang. The current location of this British(?) CVTF is 14 hexes from Singkawang, well within range of torpedo attack. All 99 of the naval bombers out of Singkawang have been set to naval attack in hopes of possibly performing a run on this task force. The weather forecast indicates clear skies...who knows.

In addition, I split Kido Butai. Four carriers (CVs Hiryu, Soryu, Zuikaku, Shokaku) have just performed a rather ineffectual port strike on Suva after uncloaking and will now steam east at speed to try to catch potential convoys in the Samoa area before looping back to Rabaul (where I've stockpiled fuel).

CV Akagi and CV Kaga have been hiding at Kendari. Given this opportunity to maybe bag a Brit carrier, a hastily-assembled CVTF with 36 Zeroes, 54 Vals and 54 Kates has left Kendari and will be steaming at great haste up the west coast of Java to try to intercept, but they are two days' out of range.
