Andreas, I have not read Part I, Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox (1882–1940), I certainly would like to! Yes, I do recommend Soldier of Freedom, James MacGregor Burns is a good writer!

Status: offline 		Thank you - I will get me these two books (as e-book, Lion and the Fox is too expensive as hardcover). There's only one book I own about Roosevelt, that's Conrad Black's Roosevelt; Champion of Freedom, but that's a huge (and heavy) 1200 page hardcover, which is very impractical to read.

Conrad Black's FDR bio has gotten great reviews...one I have added to my wishlist!

Status: offline 		Re-reading Morison's "History of US Naval Operations in WWII". What I had forgotten after so many years is the brilliant texture of the of the writing. He manages to communicate an enormous amount of data in a insouciant manner that is relaxed and assured.

Since he did experience many of the places and people he writes about, he effortlessly breaks the "4th wall" of narrative—personal observations of commanders and the like—but these never seem to ruffle the formal nature of "official" history.

I am also re-reading Malaparte: "Kaputt", "The Volga Rises in Europe" and "The Skin." An amazing personality who wrote astonishing and horrifying episodes of the war. NOT for the squeamish.

I'm reading Daughters of the Bride by Susan Mallery.

Don't worry guys, I do have some military literature. I've been re-reading off and on snippets from my series Brotherhood of War by WEB Griffin. Did anyone ever read that series? (it's not new, came out last century).

Status: offline 		Yes. I've read most of the Brotherhood of War series. Twice actually. First time I chain read the books to a point where I got somewhat annoyed and felt I needed a break. It got so extended that when I got back to the books I decided to begin anew. And I got to almost the same spot as the first time and there I needed a breather once more.

I mean it, you will not regret it! And that is coming from someone who reads at least one Fantasy novel per month. This is a hell of a big read but worth every minute of it. If you want to try something lighter from Sanderson, "the Mistborn" series is also fantastic and he did complete the "Wheel of Time" series when Jordan died before completing it. His way of incorporating Magic and explaining it is simply phenomenal as well as his World Building.

Status: offline 		Heard a lot of good things about Sanderson, even listened to his podcast about writing for a long time, need to dive into some of his stuff.

Right now I'm working my way through the complete works of Lovecraft. Read about half of it last year, which was mostly short stories (they are in the order written) but now there have been several relatively lengthy stories. Can't decide which I like better. The variety of the short stories was great, but also left me feeling more like I had experienced a dream rather than an actual plot.

Status: offline 		I just picked up two books from my local Oxfam, X Platoon by Steve Heaney and Operation Mincemeat by Ben Macintyre. A bargain at £1.99 each! Mincemeat has been recommended to me several times, and X Platoon looks quite interesting; should scratch my SAS-itch, at least.

Anyone read either?

Status: offline 		Saw Steel Inferno: I SS Panzer Corps in Normandy in a local bookshop window and couldn't resist. It seems to describe tactics in quite fascinating detail; I'm not particularly knowledgable about Normandy so this looks to rectify that.

I should probably stop buying and start reading!

Sounds interesting, but I fail to locate the 3rd book of the trilogy. There is this one, and "The Conquering Tide - War in the Pacific Islands, 1942-1944", but what's the title of book #3?

An interesting fact that he highlights that we have known for ages but never really thought about.

UK casualties caused by bombing 1939-1941 - some 45,000

German civilians killed by bombing 1939 -1941 - 950

And the UK's bomber command began the campaign conceived as a heavy bomber force to attack industry. mounted operations most nights, as did the Germans, and achieved almost nothing.
