T106 south (Soviet)

After not too careful assessment (as always) of my troops I decided to abandon any planes of regaining territory to the west and focus my attention on Saper's bait. I think in the longer run it will enable me recapturing more ground - shifting southwards will create more opportunities of morale building attacks. Or so I hope.

I made far far less attacks than I expected I would be able to.

Kamil,

What are you doing with your air force? I see your numerical superiority growing turn by turn and wonder why you are not expending more of this air power attacking Axis forces (air and ground)?

I'd be interested to see you attack some of his fortified positions more, especially around Moscow - the offensive CV's of the underlying units do not indicate a lot of strength, and with a healthy dosage of sappers you should be able to make a lot of that puffed up defensive CV go away...

I will soon face manpower shortage, so I do not want do launch to many failed attacks that is why I prefer to attack in area where terrain I more favourable and his troops density is lower.

Saper reminded me by well placed counter-attack that I Wehrmacht is still force to be reckoned with.

I try to find weak spots in Saper's defence. To be honest I do not expect much progress during summer of '43.

Attacks on my positions south of Stalingrad are really great opportunity to build up morale cheaply.

Leningrad Front (operating near Tambov) is still weak. Very tempting target for counter-attacks.

Not encouraging sight in the southern Stalingrad approaches - German infantry is building their fortifications really fast.

There is clearly a lot of people to trap southeast of Rostov. But I suppose it's doubtful that you may achieve a gigantic blow without concentrating all your strength there. That would require at least a solid pre-emptive attack elsewhere to have him shift his troops...

It is really hard to punch through defences supported by panzers in reserves mode.

Only one German attack. It has taken place in central part of the Front.

Unless it was really valuable real estate, I can't think of anything that would make an Axis player happy with this attack. Less than 3:2 in losses. The only thing lacking is 300 more Soviet fighters and 100 Il-2's.

BTW, Airbases can best be placed on functional rail hexes to save vehicles.

He makes that kind of attacks very rarely, just to remind me not to get too adventurous.

That is good piece of advice, especially that I struggle with vehicles and it will get worse once I finish my ambitious plan of building 20+ mech corps.

I know, that reducing Voronezh won't get me much closer to Berlin, but it is same case like with fighting south of Stalingrad - acceptance that win is impossible and preparing army for year '44 and fight to draw.

Increasing number and quality of mech corps makes hit and run attacks undertaken south east of Stalingrad more numerous.

Your army is now stronger than the german one. You should change your way of thinking and begin to press him on the whole front.

Several strategic options are up to you:
- the obvious one: Rostov
- The seconday: extending the front from Astrakhan to Stalingrad. He will not be able to follow you.
...

The fear must change of side.

The German armored formations will slowly bleed to death. Everytime they enter the battle from reserve decreases their capacity next turn. The key is to have lots of anti-tank assets and artillery to make this as expensive as possible. Hit the Panzers with airpower, especially using Sturmoviks, in the area of the attacks. Are you using reserves for your attack and are your commanders good?

Kamil, I really think you should be raising a lot more artillery divisions. Mech corps will not solve your fundamental problem here: cracking the fort line. You have a semi open flank to play with, true, but the Axis can give that up at any time and make a fully continuous front line by falling back to Rostov. The flank is just buying him time.

It is the rifle corps and the artillery division that are going to win the war for you, not the mobile forces, by relentlessly beating the Whermacht into a pulp.
