Wow, Ya gotta hate that kind of opportunity slipping by! I counted 27 subs ALL packed into the Torres Straight area? or is that OPSEC?
anyway - are you going to move the subs into his transit lanes? Subs seem much more effective as blockaders early in the war than hunters.

There's no OPSEC there, which is not to say I don't alter some screenshots, in fact I'm working on one now. On the question of strategy or doctrine, it's interesting because I find the IJN doctrine of only going against warships foolish. Now some of you pipe in please who know that's a myth. I know myself that they often attacked transports of whatever kind. My doctrine (in this PBEM, not necessarily others in the future) is based in part on the inferiority of my torpedoes, and in part on the temporary strategic situation. I'm viewing my subs right now as a deterrent to the IJN being too adventurous with the KB, as there's a significant possibility of a price to pay. Once I feel competitive with them in CVs that will change. Until then, my subs are potential supply deliverers, but currently I have no valid targets (in my view, of course) and the presence of the KB presented an irresistable target. My subs happened to be fairly concentrated when the KB arrived, and how can you not go after them? You may have noticed that my doctrine with the Dutch subs has been somewhat different, and this is based in part on the high quality of their torpedoes, and their valiance as well. While I like concentrating them sometimes on likely target areas, in their case I'm most interested in sinking troop carrying vessels, as there is a lot of that activity going on at the moment. My priorities change from day to day however. Later on, I will be most interested in intercepting tankers and (please God) oilers. Especially ones headed east as opposed to west, as they catch fire more easily. In summary, for the moment I consider my subs tactical weapons, but before long I will consider them strategic. Later will come the day when ASW on both sides is so good it will be very difficult to be a submariner. I am terribly envious of the IJN subs that have their own avian reconnaisance, and I wish I could combine some aerial anti-ship capability that could reach the areas where my subs operate, in part to suppress their ASW. The Americans never came up with their own Bettys though. Or Condors for that matter. They did some work with B-25s and other types, but nothing with those kind of ranges (that I know of, someone always corrects my ignorance of my own ignorance with some inconvenient facts). I hate it when that happens.

You cracked me up how you said that!!!

As you are fairly early in your game - may I suggest you take 3 sqdrns of B-25's and set them to train Naval Search, park them in one of the backwater airbases, and forget them until mid 1943? They will be high 80's experience by then and pretty good ASW units. I then moved them first to Pago Pago and flew them there to get some live kills... Then moved them to Port Moresby where they cleaned up around Rabaul & Coral Sea area. They were very effective in a game against the A.I. I'm currently doing that in my game now.

Until then, my subs are potential supply deliverer

You suggested that before - I saw that most subs carry 1T or less of supply, does it really make a difference? or is it for small outposts that don't need a lot?

Yes, if they are important, i.e. Wake. With the level of bombing going on at Manila and Bataan, it's pretty much pointless. After they drop off supplies, change their missions to patrol, they still will have a full complement of torpedoes. There may be poits at which PM or Darwin could use some help if you use enough subs and complement that with transport AC.

On the B-25s, you can train pilots in ASW and search on less valuable planes like Bolos and Kingfishers just as well, then move the pilots to B-25 or PBY units when they are ready. I've also had B-24's I use to search get pretty good at taking out subs.

2/10/42 Apparently because I didn't observe proper OPSEC on my last map posting, he bombed the airfield at Tuyun and damaged a bunch of DC-2s. Bet he didn't know there was anything operating there at the time.

Geoff it had a lot more to do with my recon of Tuyun than your last map posting. I had been using those bombers to bomb your troops and as a target of opportunity which I had ignored for a number of turns with the land combat over I took it.
